They (aka MS) clearly didn't learn from their 8GB fiasco with the original Xbox. Some of the latter Xbox models had 20GB formatted to show 8GB space (lolcatz). I am all about giving choice to the consumer but 20GB, no HDD models of the Xbox 360 are ridiculous. It's easier to get a steady supply of bigger HDDs than it is to get 20GB drives.
This is where Sony shines with the smallest disk drive on their machines being 40GB aside from the user having the ability to upgrade the 2.5" drives fairly easily. (I have both the 360 Elite and the PS3).
Ditto, I own a WRT54G as well and in the last 3+ years, I've powercycled the router less than five times. Maybe I am lucky but maybe the real problem isn't with the router and how the other devices talk to the router?
1. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot 2. Wednesday Thursday Friday 3. Wow Text File 4. Write To File 5. Welcome To France (lolcats) 6. We The French 7. Work Time Fun
Lenovo has been doing this for a while. I got my Thinkpad with SUSE installed on it and avoided the whole XP versus Vista fee. Of course I now have Ubuntu running but that's a different story.
It's not slashdotted and it's a very small article.
However, there's no suggestion that the Gina will lead directly to a production car in the short term. Instead, Bangle says that its principles have influenced the infamous 'flame-surfaced' styling of BMW's current crop... and will continue to do so.
Expect to see unusual-looking Beemers for a few years to come, then.
No, I am not new here and I have karma to burn. Go for it.
Or that Slashdot picked up that "dumb fucking article". Or that you and I are actually on slashdot right now and posting about these dumb fucking choices. Something to think about eh?
Must be another CO day here. While we are at it, let me add my totally obvious comments. Instead of spending atleast 400-450$ on a PS3, you can build yourself a proper PC with components from newegg and download Ubuntu and install it for a superior Linux experience. What's that you say? You want a Blu-ray drive? Here's one that's not so expensive.
Zonbu not upto your taste? Perhaps Madtux might help.
That was from 3mins of Googling - you get my drift. Linux on PS3 is almost as old as Linux on PS2 (one with HDD). Anyone remember Linux on xbox?
I am not sure who or what I should be insulting here - the selection of this story or Popular Mechanics. Oh and 129$ from newegg for a BDROM drive is cheap enough for me (HTPC and all) - Give it a couple of months and you will get sub 100$ BDROM drives and as any serious gamer knows, it's not the console price that will get ya - it's the games as they come out but I digress. Back to watching Monty Python on Hulu...
It might have to do something with the fact that I am a non-native speaker of the language but I read the title thrice...
Was it:
1. Microsoft Free (a year ago Microsoft was released from prison after making a deal with DA which included the real scoop behind flying chairs)
2. Microsoft Free as in Pick Your Free Tibet Joke/sharonstone> I kid.
From the article, towards the end he mentions he uses XP and enjoys it as well but also mentions All I can say is that for the last year, I have been using Open Source exclusively and I am loving it!...
- Windows Reskits have cdburn.exe and dvdburn.exe - very capable tools for recording media - D-Tools is free and is an excellent tool
I have multiple machines running Linux and Windows (this particular laptop I am posting a reply from is a Linux only Thinkpad) and Linux is not really more desktop capable. I am playing the devil's advocate here: good for you if you managed to figure out that Linux works better for you.
It doesn't work better for everyone. I need Photoshop (Sorry, I am not too bright to use GIMP), I need a couple of my RTS games that I play casually and I need my Windows Rhapsody client. I use wine for Photoshop, Caesar3 and I use Vmware + Windows 2000 for Rhapsody. I also need Windows to watch streaming Netflix and I'll be creating an XP image in the near future just for Netflix (Netflix supports only WinXP and higher).
So now do you get an idea? Linux isn't desktop ready because a majority of the rest of the world isn't ready for Linux. This is a 100% Linux laptop and still I need to rely on wine and Vmware to use the applications I really want/need.
My first Linux distribution was Redhat 5.2 and it's been quite a journey - Ubuntu 8.04 for me is the closest I've seen to a perfect Linux desktop but as much as I love it and use workarounds to keep using it fulltime, the distribution isn't there yet. Linux *isn't* there yet. I want it to be and I'll rejoice the day I have to stop using my workarounds.
I love using my Linux laptop over my windows machines at home (one's a high end gaming machine, the other's a pretty decent Windows Media Center box) and I love using my Linux machines at work (5 boxes running Linux and one Windows notebook) but I do keep windows around for Windows does tasks that Linux cannot do for me yet.
I usually bash Microsoft and Windows freely but I also do acknowledge Linux's shortcomings. If you believe otherwise, well, there is this certain cliche about ignorance and bliss...
I get your point. I was trying to stay on topic (H1B Foes Challenge...) and was offering insight as to what really happens behind the scenes and the reason why OPT in its current form is almost worthless.
Your line about foreigners making their home countries better to live reminded me of Geriatrix from the comic Asterix: "I have nothing against foreigners as long as they live in their own country".
We are contributing to this land and we consider this to be our home. If you want your kids to get a fat job, well it's not my place to tell you how to raise your kids but that statement of yours almost sounds like xenophobia. Immigrants working along with Americans made this country what it is today and I don't think it'll work to suddenly turn back and say "Hey enough immigrants, let's seal the country's borders for this country's future and job protection".
Immigration reform is required but I can see your reply being similar to the one you just gave me. Again, I get your point and the fact that you do not care for how and the why as long as the "what" i.e.,"your world being secure" happens. I could further educate on the topic at hand but I can see it being totally futile and off-topic as far as you are concerned. Peace mate.
I don't disagree with you (and you're civil) I see just two different perspectives. What I meant to say was we don't qualify for either SS benefits or unemployment with our visas. SS might kick in with a green card but:
1. Not everyone stays/gets a green card and 2. Green card holders pretty much settle down in the US for good (some become citizens) 3. Green card holders have to work for atleast 10 years before retiring (after they get a green card I believe) to qualify
I've continued to live in the US since :
1. A simple here is a luxury compared to where I come from 2. I appreciate the aspects of the culture that discourages reservations (affirmative action which is very heavy back home), inequality and there is no caste crap in here. 3. I love online shopping/shipping!
Seriously though, I came here as a student (aka $$ come in when we pay tuition here - not everyone gets scholarships or assistantships, many do but many also do not) and you hit the nail on the head when you said the US economy didn't bear the cost of training us (They call it brain-drain back home but it's less severe now than it used to be). This is why I try to differentiate between students who come here to study (BS,MS, Phd: we do this because US has some of the best institutions in the world and more importantly has enough) and the H1B imports who are just brought in by those LLCs.
Atleast for the kids who come here to study and try to establish a career here, I do not believe it's all about better skills (compared to Americans). It's just the skills they have and can market to get a job here so they can settle down here. For them to do that, the only way is to go through an H1B. If there's another way out, that would be great.
For example, I wouldn't be against a law that dictates the pre-req for an H1B (or for a job) be an US degree. It would be harsh but it wasn't easy for us either (getting through school, paying the bills, blah blah). This would filter out a lot of the bodyshopping and H1B imports (possibly underqualified, certainly underpaid and totally unfair on many levels).
The system as it is now, isn't totally fair to a lot of H1B holders and Americans. The employers know that ultimately the H1B holders are at their mercy (although you won't hear complaining for obvious reasons). The system is also exploited by a number of LLCs (both Indian and American). You can get the basic idea here. That link will give you the reason why thousands of H1B visas are claimed on day one. Or Google for Indian consultants suck or evil desi consultants. I could give you a few American consultants who do the same job too (with a better accent) but I'll have to do it as AC.
I am an Indian and I have been in this country for 9 years and I fall in the category I mentioned. I have a healthy number of Indian acquaintances and some of them are friends and none of us have a green card and all of us have been paying social security knowing fully well that we cannot claim it anytime soon (nor could we ever claim it). As for the high pay, some of my friends at MS can claim high pay (I can't).
None of us that I know of get more than 4 weeks of vacation a year and most of us use it all up to go home to visit our old folks (aka we can't use our vacation to visit Hawaii or Bahamas or ).
To be fair and honest, I have heard a couple of stories about Indians with green cards who had real estate businesses on the side and have companies here but do employ Americans for that job (smart and natural thing to do). Also a good number of Indians do what you mention (send money home to build homes back in India).
The group I am talking about is not a big one (a couple dozen max) but 3 couples in that group have their own home in the US. They buy from Costco and other US stores, send their kids to US schools and try to fit into the US way of life they best they can. I guess my point is not every Indian fits into your stereotype:). We don't begrudge on paying social security knowing fully well that we can never claim unemployment on our visas.
You aren't far from the truth mate. Most people on H1Bs (who graduate from schools in the US) stay outside the US for less than 3 weeks a year for almost 9-10 years (considering 2.5 years in graduate school and the rest of the time in H1B status till they get a green card, if they choose to get one). They spend the 2-3 weeks of vacation visiting folks back home.
I've had it on my Thinkpad R61 for 28 days now and it works amazingly well. I do realize that just because it works for me doesn't make it an awesome release. Just because you have had a couple issues doesn't make it a beta quality release either.
Define a serious user for me. Realtek AC888 not working is a corner case and will be patched soon. If you have issues with Dolphin, use Konqueror or Nautilus. I personally avoid KDE - so can't help you much there. If you are a serious user, try having a more descriptive line instead of a "makes an error window pop up when using a mouse".
It isn't a perfect release and I know Linux isn't as user-friendly as people desire it to be. Sadly that also means it isn't idiot-friendly either. You point out two issues in a vague manner and call the experiences terrible...
A few readers have already posted the utter obviousness of the lack of security when someone has physical access to a machine. Linux machine root passwords can be reset, any Windows machine's Administrator password can be blanked if there is physical access.
Linux distro named BackTrack? Who is this kdawson and how is he such a fucking idiot? All the "elite haxors" in the video are doing are mounting the Windows filesystem in offline mode and doing two simple file operations. Again, how is this news and why is slashdot consistently posting more crap these days? Slashdot: morons for editors, shit that doesn't matter (anymore).
There is no real comparison. The British actually have a richer heritage and history unlike the USofA. That and the Brits and the other Europeans took care of the tearing down part a couple hundred years ago.

Maybe because the console is also referred to as Xbotch 360?
