I have to refute that comment about matching some prices... three large office supply/tech stores around here have such policies, and they will match/beat any price in the country with the only exception being if it's online they will add shipping to the price they are matching, which is fair enough.

Interesting... I have Shaw as well and had them specifically tell me that I could transfer as much data as I wanted to. Apparently I had been transferring 1 Gig a day on their Lite Speed (200 Kbit/sec I think). I'm now upgraded to their High Speed which must be 1.5 Mbit/sec and from my guess I'm probably transferring somewhere around 2-3 Gigs a day.. no problems yet.

I believe they only have a problem when you're running servers, or uploading too much. That's likely what did it for you.

Yep, the SDSL has no uptime guarantees, but for a low cost connection that isn't lopsided, it's a pretty good alternative. Unfortunately there is only one SDSL provider in the area, as opposed to the 3 cable providers and at least a dozen DSL providers.

I'm not sure why I was quoted for a 1.336 Mbps T1, but I can only assume it was taking into account ATM overhead or something along those lines.

I'd hate to live where you do. If memory serves me correct from last month, here, on an island in Canada, I can get an SDSL connection using two phone lines giving me a 1.2 Mbps connection for $150 CAD per month.

Sure as heck beats a T1 which supplies 1.3 Mbps at $1300 per month. The only difference is the 99.8% uptime SLA and unlimited IP addresses available to T1 customers.

Actually I was recently on the phone with Shaw because my modem kept losing it's connection. They said to drop by the office and they'll exchange it, which fixed the problem.

The tech told me though, that I'm transferring 1 Gig a day, which is fine, but that could have also been why my connection was crap. He noted I'm on their "Lite" speed package, too. I asked the tech how much transfer is too much, and it said it was unlimited as long as I'm not running a server.

Since my downloads are from mainly binary newsgroups (much better source for "pushed" movies/music than p2p), and not Kazza or whatevever else, I'm needn't have any open ports and am in the clear with downloading as much as I want.

Life is great in Canada. 256kbit/sec unlimited transfer connection for just $18 CDN/month :)

    > and they need to fetch you public key somewhere

If this is supposed to be as hands-off as advertised, fetching the public key will be done automatically.

Now I suppose both of these will suck up more resources (CPU & bandwidth at the spammer's end), it is looking better for antispam, but the problem I pointed out is still present that scanners will be rendered useless unless they have access to everyone's private key.

Well here in Shaw's side of the country, most of the cable providers are around the $100/mo mark, bundled with web hosting so they're more aimed at home businesses or small offices as opposed to residential. However, the point is that there are companies offering it and it is one more choice to consider. Right now I have a 100 kbit/sec connection for only $18/month. It's cable, with monopolistic Shaw, and is down for at least 15 minutes a day.

In Victoria, BC -- which is on a friggin island -- we have somewhere around 8 ADSL providers and 1 SDSL provider, as well as 5 or 6 companies who will provide cable Internet. This is because the CRTC requires the telco and cable monopolies to lease lines to private ISPs.

While I have yet to find a company who offers reliable service, I imagine that is because the telco (who CRTC is currently fighting because they are providing substandard service), is intentionally neglecting the private companies.

Though all in all, there is plenty of choice here with a population of 300 000 or so, and on an island.
