Of course, the MPAA doesn't give a rat's ass about customers, they (like all other corporations, by definition) care only about the investors. If they weren't so damned worried about appearing profitable to Wall Street, they'd be all for letting customers make their own perfect digital copies.
It seems rather ironic then that people (most of them MPAA customers) only invest in mutual funds with the highest rate of return. These fund managers then go out and demand better profitability from corporate America.
A woman living in Salem Massachusetts claims to have invented an environmentally friendly replacement to the propellant used in the shuttles solid rocket boosters. The replacement uses such exotic ingredients as eye of newt, skin of toad and bile of puffer fish to create a substance that looks and feels like the current propellant that is used. It's still too early to tell how well the new fuel will perform in the real world but researchers are hopeful it will be powering the shuttle within the next couple of years.
Maybe someone with an engineering degree could answer a couple of my questions.
Wool's team took chicken feathers and plant oils and molded them into a composite material that approximates the shape and feel of silicon.
Wouldn't "approximates the electrical characteristics of silicon" be better then just making a silicon substitute that looks and feels like silicon?
When the researchers tested it for speed, they found that the composite allowed movement at about twice the rate of silicon. Though that's still slower than the speed in air, Wool said, "I was jumping up and down."
It doesn't sound like they actually created a gate. Isn't creating something that conducts electricty a far cry from creating something that can actually be used as a gate in a circuit?
And finally. Why does it sound like this guy is wasting the tax payers money?
But neo is all powerful inside, right? Well, that pretty much has to change for there to be anything interesting happening.
I think your right about this.
In the movie, scenes which take place inside the matrix are filmed in downtown Sydney. Scenes which take place in the "real world" are filmed on a sound stage. The scene being filmed in downtown Sydney is supposedly the final scene of the movie so it must take place inside the matrix.
There's no need for a helicopter in the final scene if Neo has God like powers. He doesn't need to ride in one because he can fly and if he goes up against someone else in a helicopter he should be able to easily defeat them.
I suppose one other possibility would be if Neo is not in the final scene but Trinity or someone else is. She doesn't have God like powers and this might make for a more interesting fight. Although I doubt they would do this.
When a telemarketer calls just say "Hold on a sec I'm drivin..." then scream and hang up the phone. My cell happens to have a little flap I slam shut to end the call with that added sound effect.
Some officials, particularly from AOL Time Warner Inc. and its Warner Music Group, have raised concerns about the problems that could be caused by such suits and the complexity of proceeding with them. The suits could set the company against many users of its own America Online Internet service.

Last time I checked you couldn't circumvent fair use.
IANAL but I believe fair use only applies to copyrighted works that you have purchased. Software is licensed. I believe Hollywood also considers DVDs to be software because it has a small amount of scripting on it. This means that you have to abide by the terms you and the owner of the copyright agreed to, what ever they may be. Unfortunately in the real world millions of people don't get an opportunity to negotiate the EULA (or even see it) before they purchase the product.
Here's a link to the patent mentioned in the article. For those that just want the jist of it here's the abstract.
A digital rights management operating system protects rights-managed data, such as downloaded content, from access by untrusted programs while the data is loaded into memory or on a page file as a result of the execution of a trusted application that accesses the memory. To protect the rights-managed data resident in memory, the digital rights management operating system refuses to load an untrusted program into memory while the trusted application is executing or removes the data from memory before loading the untrusted program. If the untrusted program executes at the operating system level, such as a debugger, the digital rights management operating system renounces a trusted identity created for it by the computer processor when the computer was booted. To protect the rights-managed data on the page file, the digital rights management operating system prohibits raw access to the page file, or erases the data from the page file before allowing such access. Alternatively, the digital rights management operating system can encrypt the rights-managed data prior to writing it to the page file. The digital rights management operating system also limits the functions the user can perform on the rights-managed data and the trusted application, and can provide a trusted clock used in place of the standard computer clock.
Imagine, you can still play Halo even when your favorite show is on because its being recorded for you to watch after you've blown some shit up.
I know the XBox is a nice stable platform but to get a PVR integrated into it will be difficult. The OS will have to guarantee that the PVR will get every time slice it needs. Otherwise when you load a new level in Halo and the PVR losses a couple time slices you'll end up with a hiccup in your recording. Plus the OS will have to be rock-solid so that on the off chance your game crashes it won't bring down the PVR as well.
It would seem a lot easier to just create two separate devices:
UFOs have already been seen elsewhere in Scotland and could help explain how prehistoric creatures like the Loch Ness Monster have managed to survive for thousands of years.
So obviously aliens abducted Nessie(s) thousands of years ago and because their planet is thousands of light years away (and their UFOs travel at light speed) it only relatively recently returned her to the lock. This also means that Nessie didn't age because she was traveling at light speed.
I'm also sure that the reason there are so many UFO sighting in Scotland is because everytime some research expeditions sets out to try and find Nessie the aliens come back and help her hide. If people would just stop trying to find Nessie there wouldn't be any where near as many UFO sightings in Scotland.
Reminds me of the article about Online News Stories that Change Behind Your Back. Granted it's nothing like what the Ministry of Truth did in 1984 but it's still scary that news agencies have actually taken that first step of changing a news story.
In other news Rambus Inc. today quietly dropped it's line of Alzheimer SDRAM memory chips citing customer complaints that 256Meg acted like only 64Meg of memory.
I find it rather ironic that a company that tries to squeeze every last cent out of people for the IP it creates is using an OS created by people who have freely donated their IP.
Microsoft today announced it's new "Don't ask, Don't tell" security initiative. Microsoft is now requesting that customers no longer ask if there are any security holes in its software. It is also strongly urging all media outlets to stop telling people about any possible security issues.
A spokes person from Microsoft was quoted as saying "This is the best chance we have at cleaning up our image."
You forgot "indivisible." Windows isn't modular, remember?:)
I pledge allegiance to Windows XP,
and to the operating system for which it stands,
one software, indivisible
with Internet Explorer for all.
Or the alternate form...
I pledge allegiance to Microsoft
and the Monopoly for which it stands
one indivisible OS, bundled w/o Netscape,
with Windows and Internet Explorer for all.
I'm going to wait for the remotely operated chainsaw.
Ever wondered where all that bloat comes from?

The scary thing is it actually worked!

Somebody should go down to O'Reilly and draw the warchalk symbol for a slash dotted node on their building.

What do you wanna bet that NPR doesn't bother checking another sites linking policy before they link to it.
Luckily my tin foil hat stops them from picking up any signals from mine.
Why do I get the feeling that Professor Warwick is behind this or will at least be the first person to sign up.

Hate to tell ya, but this is slashdot, we rarely even read the articles before we post on them! ;)
