Yes and no... it is still possible to have a voice on the internet, its sure not on Television or in print href="http://maddox.xmission.net/c.cgi?u=owned">po ssible
I ran a whole labratory (50+ machines) off a dual Ultra2 and a A1000 for 2.5 years... Going to have to agree that an ultra5 is quite lot of horsepower:)
Touted as one of the REASONS to own an XBOX, an exclusive title from the author of Grim Fandango. Trailers released in 2002, still *no* sign of the thing.
Wrong wrong wrong... You're assuming the POINT of sampling at higher frequencies is to get a larger frequency response -- its not. It's to REDUCE QUANTIZATION ERRORS and NOISE, and increase DYNAMIC RANGE (the real measure of a sound card).
Quantization errors occur in the less signifigant bits, a high quality ADC will have an uncerainty of about + or - 4 bits. Think of a 10khz signal on the edge of human hearing like a nice china boy cymbal -- a cycle of a 10khz audio signal will be represented by about 4.41 samples:) I know the nyqist limit/shannons theorom says thats enough, but out here in the real world where there's noise and quantization errors its not enough, which leads me to my next point **the nyquist limit is valid only for situations where there is no noise** in other words: THERE IS NO SITUATION FOR WHICH THE NYQUIST LIMIT IS VALID. The Nyquist limit is at best, a guideline.
So now the reason you need higher resolution/bigger samples is because that alters the noise floor. + or - 4 bits in a 24 bit recording is alot less signifigant then + or - 4 bits in a 16 bit recording. Also, imagine at 192khz your 10khz signal is now represented by 19.2 samples -- error and noise is MUCH less destructive with more samples.
I deal with these issues every day in my studio, and the rule with audio is pretty much always, more is better. However, There is a point of diminishing returns -- and IMHO I think that point is 24bit/96khz. It is very difficult to distinguish a 96khz signal from a 192khz signal.
Yea... Koolance was a bad joke on consumers:) My first system died when the radiator burst *AND* simulteaneously the plastic on the resivour cracked and crumbled.
My *second* computer died of the phglem problem you described -- however in my case the phglem seized the pumps.
Any recommendations on good-quiet case fans/heat sinks?
If it works and is reliable it would be a godsend for studios. I was using water cooling cases in my studio because they are quiet but they failed one by one (don't buy koolance!).
You're off your rocker son:) Someone searching for playboy is obviously interested in NAKED WOMEN. Presenting competing products is HOW ADVERTISING WORKS.
Adeplhia runs ads that mention the dish network, is this infringement? No, its good marketing.
Damn it. I don't know what it is, but lately the moderators have been retards. I've seen more comments that were funny (or at least, attempting to be funny but didn't deserve to be mod'ed down) modded as offtopic or some such.
I wont link to their page, but theres a group that is seeking to "lower the SNR of Slashdot" by modding things inappropriately. They recruit people from their website and post lists of messages that need to be modded. Long story short, they mod something Troll when it's insightful, overrated when it's funny, etc... Some people sure have alot of time on their hands
I've had a speedpass for about 4 years and let me tell you - the speedpass pretty much has to be TOUCHING the pump. Even holding it 6 inches away doesn't work.
Unless there are some very sensative RFID antennas out there, I wouldn't feel weird at all about carrying it around.
ok, my bullshit meter is off the chart here and I'm only on the second +5 comment here.
Steganography hides *very small* messages in other *much larger* messages. By its definition it's impossible to detect. Here's why.
First of all, any terrorist worth his 76 virgins first encrypts the message to be sent. Good cyphers produce output that is statistically random so theres a good probability that the new message to be hidden is infact: random.
Now, you take a huge file, say a wav, or a bmp, and every few bytes you cram a single BIT of your data into the least signifigant bit of the message.
Here's why that is undetectable: You can't distinguish the random noise of the sampling device (CCD in the case of a camera, ADC in the case of a song) from the random noise of the encoded message.
Now the system has to be augmented a little for compressed images/music, but its still about the same. For an MP3 you could define a "1" as any time an FFT bucket reached a ceartin value, and a 0 as another, then you'd only have to manipulate the FFT coefficents...
This is the exact same situation when the RIAA wanted a watermark that couldn't be detected or removed and mathmaticians told them that was impossible -- they gave money to every snake oil salesman in a suit and they STILL lost their shirts:)
It's fucking *IMPOSSIBLE*. I'd be happy to put on my suit and give them a presentation on why this is not a good use of 850,000 dollars:)
I think the mother was told that if the assignment *REALLY* was racist then two weeks ago when it was assigned would have been the time to throw a fit:)
What can be done about it? Transition back to one-worker families so mothers can keep and eye on their kids? Media needs to value education instead of push mindless consumerism? Parents take responsibility for their children? I dunno...
Actually you're right but you don't know why. Although I am not a teacher, there are 5 teachers in my immediate family so I am pretty well acquantied with the subject.
In a nutshell, the reason the educational system has gone to hell is that teachers have *NO LEVERAGE* over students. Teachers have no way to *make* kids do anything. The only options teachers have for disciplining kids is to have them removed from the classroom (suspension, on campus retention, etc). Guess what, the kids don't care:) Most of the time when a teacher calls a kids parents the parents yell at the TEACHER and threaten to sue and whatnot. The teachers are in an impossible situation. A family member of mine once called a girls mother because she didn't write an essay. A whole *stinkin* half page essay. The assignment was to research something about apples and write it in essay format. The mother (who was black) came down to the school and screamed at said family member, "You're a racist! Black people don't eat apples! Apples are white people food. If the assignment was on sweet potatos then my daughter could have done it! Black people eat those!"
Since you're reading slashdot, I would wager a large portion of you have not been exposed to *THIS* America. That is the real face of education. And in that context, educators deal out punishments like the net-send kid got to try and maintaim order and leverage over students. The message is not "netsend is hacking" it's "don't demonstrate our ignorance infront of students causing further loss of control".
Programs like this are corporate welfare handed out to large Bush campaign contributors. There's no other possible explination. Almost 30 exempt countries? What sense does that make! None! Unless the real point never was to catch terrorists. And how would fingerprints catch terrorists anyways? No one can answer that question... hmmmm....
I really wouldn't buy GOOGLE stock. Aren't their profits reported to be somewhere in the 200 million dollar a year range? A 12 Billion dollar IPO is designed to do one thing: allow those who issue themselves the stock before hand to become wealthy.
This is another netscape boys, and a sign that the powers that be have decided to cash out on google.
Guess what, I haven't bought any RIAA cds in years. And they're still going strong:) It's not socially and technologically aware 20 somethings who are supporting the RIAA and MPAA. It's the sheeple 18 and under crowd.
Back a long long time ago when porn was huge and modems were slow, a company called ZyXEL made *awesome* modems. I'm sure you could pick one up on ebay for nothing (this one seems to be going for about 2$. IIRC the bit depth was an incredibly poor 4 bits, but what do you want for 2$?:)
Long story short, it came with dos software to run a complete little voicemail system, even a 486 could handle it nicely (as long as it had a 16550a uart). If not, you could still use vgetty or role your own as other people have suggested and you still have a cool voice modem:)
yes! Exactly! Many years ago I made an mp3.com artist account to *reserve the name of my band* on their site (I was still in the process of building my studio let alone having any songs to upload).
Every 6 months they mailed me a nice MP3.com laptop type bag! I ended up with *3* of them and gave them all away (sure wish I had one now though).
For those who don't smoke/drink, I've had similiar success going on the Atkins diet for a week or two. You're so miserable with the detox from the atkins diet you wont even think about caffeine (natural process where your body removes toxins from itself -- initiated by radical changes in diet).
awww fuck, heres the link again.

I dont think so ... This could be the bio of half the people I know, except he lucked out and made money.

100 a day? I wish. For a few weeks in december, I was getting 400 - 500 spams a DAY. Now it has leveled off to 200 - 300 a day.

How many times has a sleazy DA, or some sleazy lawyer found a friendly judge and gotten a verdict so crazy it went against common sense even?
For me the Keith Henson trail comes to mind.
