Indian and China have about a billion people each. How, exactly, are those people going to be fed, clothed and housed? Nobody has much of an idea.
I think its about time to use the phrase, "Not my problem." When is it ok to worry about the people *I KNOW* personally who are having trouble keeping housed and clothed instead of some poor people in a place I've never been to?
You my good man are right on the money. I was *ASKED* to "pitch a book" (technical book) to a very large technical publisher. Even when *ASKED* to submit a proposal I was subject to constant "market evaluations" that changed the book completely every few weeks. After the second or third time they changed the scope of the book entirely myself and my partner and I told them we weren't able to do business with them.
Point being that, the book publishing industry is every bit as bankrupt of integrity as the Movie/Music industries to which we have more exposure. A "Good" author is one that makes money, and most of the time they have no clue who that will be.
That's why I find the announcement hard to believe. Apple prices *above* commodity as a MARKETING STRATEGY (gee, it costs more, it must be better!). If apple were to make cheap IPODS to compete with other players (apple does not compete on price) that would be a huge shift in Apples overall strategy.
Buying a car that will probably cost at least $15K new isn't something most folks will do on impulse
You my friend are not familiar with the american public:) Our whole economy is based on poor impulse control and an inability to make fiscal plans. If americans acted responsibly our economy would collapse.
Its a joke/omage. There's a very (in)famous computer science article by one of the founders of computer science titled "Goto Considered Harmful". The article details the "harmful" effects of the "goto" construct in the C/C++ langauges. (I wont editorialize on this subject).
Yes anything can be abused, but thats not the real problem. It's that *EVERYTHING IS BEING ABUSED.* The various 3 letter agencies in the US figured out quite some time ago that corporations and foreign governments aren't constitutionally prevented from spying on US citizens. These 3 letter agencies actively groom relationships, and in some cases even direct corporations on what information to collect on their behalf.
If you don't believe me, recall the TIA project where the government wants to aggregate all avaliable data from public corporations about you.
Toms hardware is pretty weird. Three or for years ago now they were looking for reviewers and I applied. They "offered" me a "job" reviewing hardware based on experience and a writing sample. They said I'd have hard deadlines, not much time and the "job" would require alot of dedication the odd thing was there was -- no pay, no freebies, (I still might have done it to get my name on a few articles), but the killer was I had to *pick up* the hardware, they wouldn't even ship it to me (their office was 200 miles one way from me).
That should give you some kind of idea what kind of crud their reviewers are willing to put up with for no good reason.
I work for a company which sells PCs retail, we've had a couple computers which had worms *OUT OF THE BOX* (brand new machines, never openend. We're still trying to figure that out.
The "robot-like" algorithm of which you speak is called "dead reckoning" and is one of the fundamental types of navigation which as been used for thousands of years. Alot of robotics employ it because it is trivial to implement (assuming you can measure your speed accurately)

My thoughts exactly. He could make his own with plastic resin (avaliable at most hobby shops). Then of course the problem would be making a Minorah mold -- which now that I think about it really is a problem:D
Please do not besmearch 1 hour photo by placing it next to hook and jumanji in a sentence:)
Actually, I like hook alot (haven't seen jumanji), but they are mastrabatory (sp?) hollywood bullshit compared to the masterpiece that is 1 hour photo:)
My Archos Jukebox uses 4 rechargable NIMH batteries which are avaliable for about 12$ at walmart (fuck walmart! but thats another story):) They seem to last about 18 - 24 months each:) Granted its not as sexy as an IPOD, but it was bleeding edge when it came out, I've had it for 3+ years now.
You can always smell a "Cheap-labor Republican", and you sir stink:)
If you're serious, then you have no heart, and no *fucking* idea what goes on in a Wal-mart. I've worked in one -- let me tell you what goes on. The employes take endless abuse to the tune of sub-poverty level wages. If you stay long enough you're left with back problems, wrist problems, and bone spurs for your trouble.
I can hear the cheap labor Republican cry of, "But you don't have to work there, you can quit!" But you can't quit. Thats not the way the world works. These people are living on such a thin margin of financial saftey that a missed paycheck, an injury, their car breaking down, can make the difference and put them on the street.
And next you say, "Well, it's menial labor, its supposed to be hard." And you'd be half right, the work is supposed to be hard, but the pay is supposed to be something you can live off. We owe these people a sustaniable and not terrible living -- and let me tell you why... The middle class is stretched too thin already, theres starting to become nobody LEFT who makes enought money to sustain business. It's going to be the fall of rome all over again.
I wish I had the link, but there is a paper out there about how Microsofts income is primarily derived from pension plans and tax breaks, and has very little to do with software. The author claims that when MS goes belly up it will make enron look like nothing.
Yea theres a good reason to. The patent is a cookie given to an inventor to TELL US HOW THEIR INVENTION WORKS. They get protection for a length of time, and we get to know how it works. If a company wants a trade secret (doesn't want to tell anyone how their technology works) then they don't get that protection. That's the tradeoff.
It's a good thing to -- we want knowledge to be as widely held as possible so science can advance.
Can I tell a dumb story? Great! Back in the NT4 and dialup days I had this little chihuahua that was teething, and we all know that when a dog is teething it chews whatever the crap it wants and nothing you give it to chew. So I would try to keep him out of the computer room because he would sit under the computer and chew wires, and pretty soon the KVM would stop working, the left speaker would go silent, but luckily he never got anything high voltage...
Now anyone who ever used PPP on NT knows that NT rings the speaker with a low tone then a high tone when you log in, and a high tone to a low tone when you log out. Our story begins as I'm browsing the web or what not, and the dog has snuck under the computer (for a chihuahua that weights in the neighborhood of 7 pounds its easy to sneak places). So im browsing, I hear the tone of being logged off my dialup, I hit reconnect and nothing happens (no dialtone). I look below my computer just in time to see the dog has seperated the wire, and at just that moment he lets out this scream of unholy proportions. The loudest, most painful cry possible from a dog -- and in an instant he had run out of the room and you could hear him crying in the hall.
And at that moment, the dog learned something that I knew -- that while phones are fairly low voltage they have high amperage:)
Dude listen to yourself. I will take my Supernova II over your Analog synths any day:) "Progress" is getting the same sound from a reliable digital synth that you got from an analog synth -- and you never have to repair a broken oscilator.
I'm not going to flame you even though its tempting;) The real issue with christians seems to be they can't understand anything outside their frame of reference (not saying you personally).
Lets take your argument abut knowing God's will in a slightly different direction, lets say there was no more or less proof that god existed then there is right now, but that somehow you were able to divine the will of this alleged god with 100% accuracy, and you KNEW for absolute fact that he was against stem cell cloning.
Nobody would care. The 80% of so of the world that isn't Christian wouldn't give a crap. This is what really gets me about religious types, they are willing to make a decision about scientific progress and MY life -- which are two things that have nothing to do with them whatsoever. I have diabeties, I want it cured. Let diabetics decide if a few embryo's are "worth it."
That argument is a little abstract because there's no certainty that embyro research might lead to a cure -- so let me give you a much more real example of the same bull headedness. In Florida, christian groups are trying to pass a law that would make it illegal for homosexual couples to adopt children. Think about this for a second -- christians are saying kids are BETTER off living in orphanages then with gay couples! Whats the worst part of the whole thing? The *CHRISTIANS* don't suffer the consequences of their idealogy, a bunch of poor kids are. Are these christian groups going to step up and adopt all these children? somehow I doubt it:)
IMHO the real risk of religious scientists is the BAD scientists who start with a conclusion and search for a hypthoesis. Lucky for us non-secular scientists are often just as invested in their theories, so religion isn't really a threat.
The US government commits this error all the time -- you can only get a permit to research illegal drugs to prove they are BAD for you. A conclusion (drugs are bad) in search of a hypothesis.
Consider Einstiens famous quote "God does not play dice!" Einstien refused to believe the universe could operate on chance, and now it is largely thought to do just that. Consider the folks who came up with string theory, they were *ignored* for a decade, and now they are considered to be some of the most brilliant minds ever.
You forget something... The UN has *NO* power whatsoever. The only thing they can do is pass resolutions. They can declare themselves incharge of the internet, but I declared myself to be the king og town and that didn't work either. Here's how this will come down:
UN passes retarded resolutions concerning the internet which are designed to club the US over the head.
The US ignores these resolutions entirely seeing them for what they are.
Life continues as normal but eurosnobs have something to feel indignant about.

I have a private fax machine, have never EVER given the number out to anyone, and yet I get 1 or 2 fax spams a week.
That should give you some kind of idea what kind of crud their reviewers are willing to put up with for no good reason.
Does anyone know how to recycle lead acid batteries? I've got a whole pile of dead cells from UPS's.
I work for a company which sells PCs retail, we've had a couple computers which had worms *OUT OF THE BOX* (brand new machines, never openend. We're still trying to figure that out.

My point, if archos can do it, apple could to.
I'd prefer that to the Arbys "Chicken Bacon Swiss" coming out my nose :)

thanks my good man!
