From news.com: "A Google representative said the protocol flagged by Smith does not hint at a pending Google IM product; rather, it is merely a component used to capture IM data from America Online Instant Messenger and make it searchable on the desktop."
Yeah that works if you admin an office domain but with over a million subs do you really think we have time to go through all the domains one by one? Why do so many slashdot readers think thier 4 linux boxes running qmail at home makes for some kind of real world example?
I believe I had a legit point, anyone who is actually qualified want to take a stab at it?
Exactly the problem. ISP's won't block email from paypa1.com (notice # 1 in name) and this is not for the end user. The only way this will make a difference is if we could police EVERY domain to ensure they publish domain keys and even then spammers will just register their own domains. This technology does nothing but add overhead to the existing system.
People will never get it, why not instead require SMTP servers be published and by extention block off the rogue bot networks of infected windows PC's that send 40% of the worlds spam?
Those of you that live in KY or the southern US know what an elephant ant is but for some reason I can't find a single mention of the creatured on the internet. I was thinking they might be listed under the scientiffic name but I don't know it. Anyone know what else elephant ants are called?
Actually helmets are not covered under federal regulation. Helmets are state legislation. In PA you are not even required to wear a helmet to ride a motorcycle.
BTW, I think the bike is a pretty cool idea, I like to see people creating and not just improving sometimes.
I am not sure if this has been discredited yet, but I once heard that the reason apes are immune to AIDS is that they were wiped out by a similar disease and the surviving descendants are from the immune apes. This is reason I believe some areas heavily impacted by AIDS will develop a resistance to it over generations.
I was an XM subscriber for about a year and currently use Sirus's online subscription at work. I think the sound quality of Sirus is fine and I think they have better content on their stations.
I don't care what others say, CS is a much better multiplayer game than Doom 3 and others. CS offers a level of precision in shooting not offered in other games and has more realistic game play. The engine update is amazing if you ask me, the more realistic smoke granades and flash bang rock, as does the new machine gun.
CS still offers a level of gameplay that other cannot match, and CS:S does a very good job of renewing the game. Expect to hear more about CS:S as it moves out of beta, I was impressed with it.
"I should be able to do remote administration from any coffee shop. I love my work."
Needing access from a cofee shop does make things more difficult but there is no reason you couldn't ssh into a jump box and do your work from it. Add the jump box IP to the hosts you need access to, lock down the box and make it difficult for someone to find. e.g, bind ssh to a non-standard port and block icmp so someone probing your network does not stumble on it.
This will greatly reduce the attack surface of your network.
Exactly, why is he letting just anyone ssh into his boxes in the first place? Most of the services the company uses should be on private IP space inside of the firewall (NAT box), the rest of the devices on the outside need to be locked down good from Joe IP address.
Something I was thinking about the other day. It is pretty obvious that spyware is a gray area in legislation, but maybe there would be a loophole in this. Say I require anyone that develop software for my OS have a free license to do so. I could simply refuse less than credible companies a license. Instead of going after them for writing intrusive software, you could go after them for license violations.
A big company like MS could never get away with this, but I wonder if one could build a Linux distro with a module or something that requires such a license. The idea would add another layer of security for people that use that distro again legit companies whose software is not considered malicious but should be. Is anyone doing something like this?
I am sure it is different for other people, but most of the woman I have seen in technical groups are almost always the least skilled workers in those groups. I remember many cases where the female techs would
A) See a problem
B) Ask a male coworker what do do
C) Take all the credit for the problem
Again in "my experience", they seem to try to make themselves look better by talking trash about co-workers rather than just letting their work speak for itself (which it obviously does not).
The woman constantly throwing fits and trying to stir up trouble produces nothing more than additional management overhead.
Out of 60 or so techs and engineers at my company we have only one competent female employee, the rest of them need to go back to doing customer service and sales.
In the military we had woman in our unit, but every time a real mission came up, we left them at home.
Woman may hang in the academics of things on a college campus, but in real world men and woman have different skill sets. I don't have supporting evidence, but the reason (like autism) may be due to testosterone levels.
"Market demand for the Intel Pentium 4 processor Extreme Edition supporting Hyper-Threading technology 3.20GHz with 800MHz processor system bus in mPGA478 packaging..."
1) Build a product
2) Make it run Linux
3) ??
4) Profit!!
I don't understand how it failed.
The point I was making is that this does not curb spam in any way shape or form.

Why no posts yet?
And 20% of them may be calling Dell for help, another 20% or 30% calls their ISP instead.

I live in NY were we have Darien Lake. It was also bought by Six FLags but to everyone 'round these parts it is still Darien Lake.
I would rather have him spend the money on a college in the US than fighting AIDS in Africa. AIDS is a self-solving problem.

I don't use that one but I use the "search this site" feature all the time.

The VoIP spam will likely be IP based, in this case, they will either need my IP address or need a TON of bandwidth.
Why the strange contraption? Why not just get a DVORAK keyboard layout if compatibility is not a problem?
