...that this has already gone farther than anyone at SCO anticipated (I'll bet a SCO license that they thought IBM would either settle or buy them out - which was a stupid assumption frankly), and now they are in a position they can neither retreat from (without instantly self-destrcuting in the process, something Boies now has too much of a stake in to allow) or advance with any real hope of winning.
It could almost be seen as a courageous effort if it wasn't so fucktastically stupid.
I'll bet a SCO sitewide license that Darl is starting to regret having ever shown up for this little legal soiree.
...political campaigning has historically been exempt from any of the restrictions put on other forms of advertising (with the possible exceptions of 'truth in advertising' laws).
it is pitiful, but from from a shocking development, and I am surprised that it hasn't happened sooner, although one would get the impression that -especially at the local and state levels- that it will actually be more targetted, seeing as many campaigns use db's like Voter Vault to build actual lists based on people who donate to campaigns or are registered and active voters.
...this article is stating somethi8ng that isn't a new concept, but certainly one that needs to be paid more attention to.
Geeks in general have been absent from the political process, or at best mediocre at bitching in online fora and sending boilerplate emails as if having your meager feeling of involvement is somehow truly the best use of your collective intellect. A handwritten letter is usually worth 1000 emails (that is a comparison I have heard enough times to conbsider it fairly valid).
The people currently most likely to be active at a grass roots level (wrt technology) seem to either abject Luddites or simply big commercial concerns that have more pecuniary motives than anything else...and profits do not always equate to innovation or the best interest of the public at large. Technology Policy these days is being largely defined by non-technical cadres of lawyers and politicos who can barely spell SSH let alone know what it does. These are people who willingly purchase questionable products for elections from Diebold, who have had convoluted and inane encryption laws (here is the genie...it's out of the bottle...deal), not to mention have propped up such fucktarded laws as the DMCA and UNITA and left the state of Intellectual Property laws to go pretty much on the liberal side of imbecilic).
...MMOGs and such are probably the best large scale working models of societal interaction to date. They work more dyanmically than mathematical models.
While you have to abstract out the suspension of disbelief (i.e being a Nanomage doesn't really translate to a common role in meatspace), you essentially have many of the same macro and micro level interaction you do in real life, and being in a virtual world, aggregating behavioral data (i.e population migrations based on opportunities, aggressive versus combative roles and how their patterns of movement and interaction change, et al)
It is really interesting stuff.
...erudite and laden with deep analysis. But after reading this all I can muster is a heavy "what the fuck?!?!?!!?"
It goes beyond stupid straight into gonzo.
yes, but once it did that if would have to attempt to enforce it uniformly, which means folks like Adobe and Macromedia and who knows who else would have to pay up...and if that happened, you would have a bigger PR shitstorm than ever. And if you offered half-assed 'special' deals to certain vendors you would be invoking the ire of the D0J again...and how much pressure do you want to intentionally redirect to yourself?
Exodus was a really odd bird. They had tried to recruit away from Sun back in the 90s, and then when I went to VA I was sent there to push the idea of adding Linux to their OS stable (at the time they only offered MS and Solaris)...to say they were quite 'rigid' in their thinking would be an understatement. They seemed to use Solaris as an afterthought (or as the only way to attract Unix-centric customers) and have this attitude that the whole world will eventually fall to MS and Exodus.
...terribly funny in its level of idiocy if it wasn't for the fact that that same idiocy is fucking terrifying. but to tell you the truth, this kind of appoitee is almost Strangelovian in its perfect fir for such a draconian group.
...it means either Diebold has some other nefarious move up their sleeves, or (more likely) instead of doing what many other companies do -make a big spectacle of themselves- they are hoping to disappear into the woodwork during the upcoming election season so as to "help their benefactors"
my 2 paranoid cents
...in that it offers some mildly engaging history, but not much else. The phrase that bothers me is:
it's so ironic, the turn of events. (Caldera began discussing) what we can do through UnitedLinux to indemnify people who had used both Unix and Linux. Apparently, Darl took that in a little different direction than we intended.
I can't tell if thats Ransome indicting Darl or simply distancing himself from the brouhaha.
considering all of the various incarnations of the MS OS family have had several ways to randomly shit-themselves before,. I suppose this is MS's way of 'innovating' a new asstatstic shitting itself methodology.
...when one has to wonder if the cliche about certain academics living in hermetically sealed reality-deprived bubbles of their own deluded design is true.
this would be one of those times.
the mans screed reads like a litany of myopic thinking and a stunning lack of anything resembling a grasp of the topic at hand. Who the hell let this guy past the editing desk?
...i could reasonably see to this is that it could (if we're lucky) turn into a PR turd maelstrom that could land on the DMCAs lap, pushing for a revision/excision of this stupid stupid stupid law from the books.
...when an intellectual response just is futile and all you can do is raise your arms in digust and scream "what in gods name do they put in that morons cereal?"
"innovation" has become the poster child of malleable semantics....the most operative part of semantics being its last two syllables.
...SBC had just called me today with a telemarketing schlep asking me about switching to Cingular and getting a 'good deal' because I am a 'valued SBC customer'.....
I said 'no'.
I am now even more glad that I did. My brother had already had endless problems with Cingular.
neither really. As I stated, I am glad he did what he did, but his general decorum is pretty repugnant. I think if the FSF was not there to supply a cash flow for his basic needs and he had to find actual work, he would fail (we are not talking about a job as a talking head. As a programmer he would be so irrascible and inflexible that he wouldnt last 10 minutes in a software development group, and he certainly lacks any management skills unless you count a cult of personality as management).
I doubt its envy you smell, but it might be RMS (he is a tad ripe by all accounts).
yep, but its certainly a disservice to interoperability.
I personally hate the fact that if I want to communicate with the various people I know I need an MSN client and AIM client, IRC and a partridge in a damn pear tree at this point.
consistency is not necessarily useful if you are consistently intractable to the point of an obstruction (as RMS often has been).
He either lacks or disregards any concept of diplomacy or social tact (something which I have evidenced on numerous occasions in close range) and this - for better or worse - can be often more of a hindrance than a help to ones "cause" (and this is a cause. if he wasn't supported by the FSF he would have to actually find a day job, at which point his attitude would put him out on the street so fast there would be vapor trails).
I am glad he did what he did, but I find his inane rambling about making LUGs change their names to GNU/LUGs and other such minutae, his puerile tantrums, and frankly, his self-view as some messiah of tech (I still remember ALS where he dressed as such, complete with an archaic disk platter for a 'halo') just gets unbearable.
...of this:
1. MS are consistent. About *what* is unfortunate, but they do have that going for them
2. One should always appreciate nostalgia. Oh, SoBig, how we loved you so the first time. Maybe we can make like the horror movies and have a SoBig vs. Nimda thang.
3. In seriousness, it does provide an excellent test for the veracity of the MS "Trustworthy" computing initiative.
