    Then /. needs to learn a hell of a lot about economics and things that matter in the real world. The only way OSS can get MS to change is to demonstrate how it can rival the profits made by MS, or give them more power, so then they can rival the profits.

    This entire thing smells like a pat on the back for OSS if you ask me. I'm not saying they don't need one, because damn you guys are awesome (not sarcastic, seriously), I'm just saying that you may be going about this the wrong way.

    I get the feeling that your definition of better is different that Microsoft's. Yours probably means that it is stable, secure, functional etc. I get the feeling that Microsoft's is to sell a product that can turn a large profit. The two sides have completly different ideologies. This is a pointless argument.

    Microsoft have no intention of changing to open source, it's like trying to get someone to change their religion, not likely to happen. Why bother asking those questions, and concentrate on tackling MS head-on with quality open-source products?

    NZMA Code of Ethics:

    30: Doctors should not countenance, condone or participate in the practice of torture or other forms of cruel, inhumane, or degrading procedures, whatever the offence of which the victim os such procedures is suspected or guilty.

    Granted this is a Medical Association not council, and in New Zealand, but here we go.

    What about a doctor that works for the CIA developing effective interrogation techniques that involve torture? Some may find that unethical, others may not.

    Who finds this ethical? Ummm... Non-Malificence comes to mind (do no harm). This clearly violates this. Any "doctor" who does this kind of thing, isn't fit to practise medicine. Toture is wrong, and a clear breach of medical ethics.

    Try not to mix up morals and ethics. Lawyers for the most part act ethically. Whether or not that is moral (getting a murderer off on a technicality, suing people who render first aid to a dying person etc, etc) is a completely different question.

    Well if they had to buy a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), I'm sure that that would have taken up a large chunk of the money. In a law suit, I'm sure that that was factored in for costs etc...

    Yeah, fun except when you launch near the coast in a prevailing wind. Then dream on about getting them back. Where I was working gave rewards as well, but because of the proximity to the coast, most of the ones we got back were rusted to hell.

    That's pretty keen. One of the balloons I was trying to launch in like around 15 knot winds tore off at the parachute about 5 secs before launch. It was really scary stuff. Lucky we didn't lose the package.

    The article states that the balloons were launched day in, day out. What about the poor weather days where the wind is gusty and fast? Does the cell coverage on those days get lost?

    Over the summer (in the southern hemisphere), I worked to help launch ozone measuring balloons, (same idea, more equipment), and we launched them only in fairly calm conditions. A balloon full of hydrogen is a fairly scary prospect when it's getting blown around. Does this also mean a commercial company will be putting extra pressure on the NWS to launch in potentially unsafe conditions? Scary thought!

    They have an interesting point though. Remember the 60's (I don't I'm only 19), but there was this thing called a space race, in which America and the Soviet Union were fighting it out to get to the moon.

    Imagine if China announced tomorrow that they were launching a manned space flight to Mars within 5 years. Can anyone here forsee the states sitting idly back and letting this happen? (Assuming you believed China in the first place...)

    And NOAA isn't the only place that does weather research, even in the states, let alone the world. Ever heard of NCAR, NCEP etc?
