Bear in mind that linux has a strong tradition of unveiling every security risk found no matter how small. Most holes found recently have been found by audits, not by intrusions in linux boxens. The more holes found and fixed the better. We have no idea of just how many holes there are in windows because we cant quip about it if we buy access to the code. An independant audit of windows is impossible. In linux whoever has the time and care can do an audit. Security should be discussed, bashed and nagged about constantly.
If you look at how many holes that have been found in the core of linux and GNU tools the numbers are in favour for linux by far. Its mostly addons and applications that have holes in them.
Dont forget that a serious admin can choose secure parts for his server and thus build an pretty much idiot proof server if he has the knowledge relatively easy. In windows thats impossible because "this is what you get, live with it".
The existence of theese linux boxens with different ftpd, httpd, sshd etc etc gives a diversified net, just like in nature. If you find a hole in an application there is less chance of someone else having the axact same config.
That said there are a lot to be done in linux security but i still think its a better choice for a server since you have the power yourself and you dont have to wait for someone else to do the job. If its important you can do it yourself and that is worth more than money if your data is sensitive.
I have always been amazed by how almost every country pays MS tax even if they have both the skills and the industry to make their own software. Migrating to something from your own country would indeed put the money back in your pocket instead of shipping it abroad. Localization isnt just the language, the culture has a significant part of how a computer should interact too. There are big advantages of having your own software industry. The distance from a company in the USA to EU, Japan etc. is big both in culture and in communication. Microsoft develops mainly for the american culture wich shines through the product.
Having the development in your country should atleast in theory give a much better adapted set of applications that if you buy a ironed out fit_all_suit-everything version like Microsofts products.
Me and my gf has been on linux since 98 and neither of us has any probs with it. Once you know its principals and its underpinnings its much easier to use than most other systems. Atleast for someone skilled at computers. For a n00b i think linux can be hard at first. Some things can be made simpler than today but i hope it wont be on the expense of the flexibility. I hope linux will evolve past windows and god help us NOT into windows.
Sure it gains customers but when you have a couple of succesful companies in a niche market and your neighbor the multi billionere monopolist marches in and spends his lunch money on taking it over life isnt fun.
I do hope that they end like the germans though. Too greedy and engaging in to many fronts in the war of money. They are attacking PDA, Mobiles, servers, consoles, siebel, linux and many more at the same time.
"Something needs to be done about the rest of PC hardware before the speed of the CPU is going to make a massive difference."
Your ohh so right on that one. If we do get some new killer app that eats cycles like crazy it won help that much. The CPU will regardless run circles around memory, HD and the bus. Thats why you cant tell the difference of a 1,6 Ghz and a 2,Ghz without a benchmarking program. All that cpu power is sitting and waiting to be fed instructions that doesnt come.
A faster replacement for the HD is long overdue but then again my last PC had a floppy!
Introduce linux servers when its time to exchange old ones and use linux as a replacement for things where windows dont work that well. A complete overhaul at once is probably going to cost more than its worth. There is no need to toss something that works out the window.
If you replace things as they are too old/broken you dont get the problems that arise when you rip/replace everything. A slow steady pace of replacing should keep the TCO down.
That is unless you want to rip everything out and install an iron_butt of an IBM server. In that case it can save a lot of money but the investment is pretty hefty the first year.
I have always bought my CD's. Since 1998 i have ripped them and put them on my computer for conviniance and to keep the original CD's in mint condition. To this date i havent had any problems ripping them and i have never ever shared them on kazaa or whatever.
If they make it hard for me to rip the CD's i buy and stop me from using them wherever i want i wont have a choice. I will have to buy my CD's and then D/L the songs from internet. The incentive to buy them darn CD's becomes pretty small by then i can assure you.
Meanwhile the pirates hook their computer to a half assed soundcard and loop the sound to another soundcard ripping into mp3/ogg/whatever. The pirating continues as before and I who pay gets to take the problems.
Copy protection wont ever work and its time they get that into their thick skulls. Palladium/TCPA isnt going to stop pirating either cause once the data is out of the trusted enviroment its not copy protected any longer. Pirating can only be solved by getting to terms with their customers again (lowering prices to an acceptable level would be a start). Then start a nice campaign telling why its wrong to pirate. No one listens to you if they hate you.
Well they did get access to the source code didnt they? Symbian is as a matter of fact pretty much a source distribution. So by my reasoning they have discovered benefits in having access to the source code. The step from wanting access to the source code to Open Source or GNU/linux is pretty short. Once they have the basic idea and have discovered the benefits i for one can imagine they have taken one step closer to Open Source.
Open Source isnt the GPL but the step from Open Source to the GPL is very short.
The more companies that gets used to have access to the source code and being able to make modifications the better. Once you are familiar with the concept its much easier to uncerstand why Gnu/linux works and what benefits it can bring. Also its much harder to fool someone with things like Shared Source if they are knowledged in GPL etc. and can see the really big differences between licenses.
Lets see, to access my data anywhere i should use what really sounds like....net!
Oh what a surprise this was, not.
I can imagine why the unabomber used him for target practice.
In comes the laywers...

I really do hope that MS sends there little minions upon Linux. That way it gets evidently clear that they will do anything possible to stifle any competition no matter how small. Linux isnt a threat to Microsoft at the moment at all. Its just a player in the same industry and i dont think that Microsoft is afraid of linux. Im more suspicious that the real fear is if linux succeds in open up he internet and gets some solid standards into place. If i wore to make an OS today i sure would make it POSIX compliant. That way i have thousands of applications at hand from day one.
I really thinks thats what MS is really afraid of. Not linux but lets face it, there are plenty of room for innovation in the OS arena and especially in the GUI field that has almost grinded to a halt. All we have are new colors and fancy addons but the basic principle is ancient in computer time.
A serious new OS needs applications (the barrier to entry) and with POSIX you have instant applications with little work. You dont have to muster developers to start coding if applications from Linux runs on your OS.
Microsoft is afraid for the next step, when someone whips out something new and they are left behind. They have proven that they are totally incapable of inventing anything. The day that someone runs away from them they are doomed because of their complete lack of ingenuity.
Get rid of that stupid AD and install a real catalogue system like LDAP or NDS. Active Directory is made for Windows and nothing but windows. Making anything else to work with it is very hard and not worth it. What on earth do you need from AD that cannot be solved otherwise? If its just a matter of a few machines there shoudnt be any significant gain in ease of admin in AD. If there are plenty then you should install a MAC server. Microsoft does not and will never play nice with anything else but Microsoft.
The one person that put the document on a public webserver is the one who's to blame. No matter how they toss and turn it it was accessible without any access restrictions from the web. Nothing was hacked and no password guessed.
I relly hope that the court handling this case will understand how a webserver functions. In that case its all clear whos to blame.
I like it really much because its provided by my landlord. We are roughly about 150 households that shares a 2/mbit line and since not everyone uses the internet its pretty fast. I get typically around 500kbit/s so i dont complain. Best of all it doesnt have anything between me and the internet. It had a proxy/firewall at first but all the complaints about closed ports made them take the unbelievable sane decision of completely removing the firewall. All i have to have is an os with a DHCP client and ethernet. This enables almost every existing OS today and doesnt exclude anything.
Im all satisfied but im lucky, most people here in sweden use Telia and they suck hard.
Instead of marketing and PHB dressing down to regular clothes they need the entire staff to clone up to their level? If i see an IT in suit i cant take him serious, ill assume point'n'click level.
Sure i can understand that there are needs for interopability with MS software but still. Why not develop an open standard and then work from that? With all the brilliant developers currently working on various linux projects all that is needed to work in the same direction would be an open standard for calendars and syncing. Its not brain surgery so it should be fairly easy to whip up a standard for it.
We are now inline with MS and has the chance to run away from them. To embrace their technology is to justify it when we could cevelop better things than they can.
My C++ book is in the mail and im going to start making a difference too. I know i shouldnt be voicing about theese things when i dont do anything by myself so i decided to learn programming and do someting about it. See ya!
"Not at all. You seem to come from the perspective that all violence is bad. I come from the perspective that all unjustified violence is bad."
And therein lies the problem. The muslims have been shoved around enough to have justification to attack the USA in their point of view. Anybody can whip up a justification, not just the USA.
A responsible and cooperative foreign politic would be as much of a help against the threats of terrorism as any military force. Even so to much aggression will spur terrorism from inside if the agression is questionable. You cant fight fire with fire. One dead palestine or any muslim for that matter is 10 terrorists tomorrow.
I am all for bringing the terrorists down but in this case there havent been any evidence at all even pointing towards Saddam. To put so much effort into going after him seems pretty useless since the terrorists can lay back since they arent the prime target for now.
Im dont think any violence has justification until someone strikes at you. A world of strike first mentality would be a pretty dangerous place to live in.
But Saddam hasnt started any war against the States. Should he then be eligeble to use nuclears if USA tries to invade? Dont start dragging his attempt to snuff Bush. Usa has tried to snuff more leaders in other countrys than any other country. I dont like Saddam but it cant be that whats wrong in one country is suddenly all dandy in another. Democracy didnt stop the germans from voting in that idiot before WW3 did it?

Maybe they can predict the weather a couple of days with this. The best way is still to put your finger in the air. Its about time someone changes that.
About nuclear testing, isnt the capability to destroy the whole earth enough? Kinda makes me less worried about Saddam and more worried about the cowboy in charge.

Linux is like my wife, hard to understand but very nice once you get under the hood.
"Free and open? Cheap Total Cost of Ownership? Do thousands of geeks look at the internals every day?"
No that was my x girlfriend.
This one is all mine and the TCO is pretty nice, she works with computers. As of looking at her she is a geek, nuff said.
"RMS is the Jerry Springer of Open Source Software" --AC

Yay man your so far off base!
I spell bad because im Swedish, plain and simple. That and the fact that i write my comments in less time it would take me to say them out loud.
My motto is:
To think before you post is like wiping your ass before you shit.

Hey, you made me squirt cofee all over my monitor!
I imagined it, that was stupid considering i had just taken a mouthful och cofee.
