Anyway, $60 for a component connection is ridiculous ($30-40 has been bad enough). That's the sort of thing that could make me go from buying the Wii at launch (it would be my first time doing so) to waiting until the price comes down. I'm certainly not going to go back to NTSC if the console is capable of 480p. Fortunately for people without digital TVs (and Nintendo), it won't matter to them.
Kinda makes you wonder how the XBOX crowd feels like when they're asked to pay $100+ for the wifi adapter to make their system wifi'able. Think about it, that's half the (not yet announced) price of the Wii! And yes, the Wii will have wifi built in! To people who say the xbox360 isn't that expensive when you include all peripherals and things, I say blah.
Anyways.
If you RTFA, you'll notice these peripherals are all 3rd party ones. So I wouldn't worry quite yet. Sept. 14th is gearing up to be the big day we find out just about every missing details about the new system. (Price, date, peripherals, etc)
That's a week away. For the record, I can't friggin' wait:)
This is more insightful then you know. It's the only gaming company left that doesn't have some ulterior motive. Sony wants the PS3 to push its bluray format into every living room. Then you have Microsoft battling that by siding with the HDDVD camp, cuz THEY also have interest in the "living room".
Meanwhile, Nintendo wants to make games, and fun ones at that. You can argue it's motive is to try to tie in the DS and sell more of those (or vice versa). But at least it's still game related.
I for one am siding with Nintendo on this one, and not only because I'm a Nintendo fanboy, but because I want my gaming to not be affected by some stupid political battle of the formats. I don't want to be caught in the middle of a format war that no good can come of.
These guys are hardcore gamers, meaning that they have little to no clout amidst the general public. Hardcore gamers are just a tiny fraction of people who buy consoles.
Isn't Nintendo the one going after "the general public"? I think Sony already priced themselves out of the "general public" market. I can't imagine a non-gamer plunking down $600 for a gaming system with zero games and 1 controller.
"We've already talked about it, there's no chance we're buying a PS3 at launch."
Ouch. That's not good for Sony. You may or may not know who Gabe and Tycho are, but if you do know them, you know they also run PAX. Which is a very large user-centric games show. (Unlike E3).
These guys are hardcore gamers, that's not the kind of comment you want from guys that have this much clout.
My rating in Tetris hovers somewhere between 6500 and 6800 usually, and when I get put up against someone with a mid to low 5000 rating I almost feel bad about beating them, heh.
You shouldn't.
I love playing people with a much higher score than me because the points system isn't linear. Take note of your score before and after a game. Especially take note if you play someone that has a big difference in score (either higher or lower). What you'll notice is that when there's a big difference, if the lower score person wins, they win a lot more points than if the higher score person wins. In other words, if you have a 6500 rating, you really don't want to lose to someone with 5000, cuz they'll steal lots of points from you if they do win:)
I'm hovering around that range too, and I played this person who was rated about 7500 points once. We were playing and playing, and he kept beating me and beating me. He kept taking little bits of my score away from me. After about a dozen games, I finally got him, and our scores were pretty much back to where it started.
So the moral of the story, don't feel bad beating someone with a much lower score than you in tetris, you have to defend your points. You might run into someone that has a much lower score than you, beat you once, then leave, lowering your score by a lot;)
Do you people actually have 10hrs of spare time you can just sit down and play straight through? Don't you people have to work? Eat? Poo? Spend "quality time" with the wifey?
Right, this is/., what was I thinking.
And what happens if some of your teammates can't play that long. I can imagine for most people this experience is gonna suck as people constantly drop out midway through a game. Only the hardcore'est of hardcore is going enjoy this game to its fullest.
I played WoW, and I didn't quit it because I got bored, I just didn't have the time to put in it. This game sounds just as ridiculous. Maybe that's why I like CounterStrike so much. You can hop on, play for a half-hour or so, and leave. (And NOT have to worry that the kids who aren't working are collecting bigger and badder ass weapons to kill you even worse tomorrow).
FTFA: "What we have developed is a way to construct magnetic fields so that when you travel round the magnetic fields, starting and stopping at the same position, you have gained energy."
The company is from Ireland right?! Maybe it's the same people that caused the Pentium floating point bug from a few years back. And they're at it again, only this time, they forgot to carry the 1 perhaps?!:)
I think homebrew stuff is kewl. I love it. However, I don't like how you have 10 things hanging off a DS for it to work:)
With that said, I saw this on engadget last week. It looks promising for a simple *UNOBTRUSIVE* homebrew experience. Which is what I want:) I could use it like a regulary old DS cartridge and not have weird things dangle off my DS for homebrew fun.
FTFA (bolded text was done by me): Questioned by police, the scared friends admitted they had broken some loose branches because they had wanted to build a tree house, but said they did not realise what they had done was wrong.
Officers considered charging the children with criminal damage but eventually decided a reprimand - the equivalent of a caution for juveniles - was sufficient.
I can think of manyotherpeople to be arresting for criminal damage.
What the heck is this world coming to? Kids playing in a tree, break a few branches and get arrested (and DNA tested!? WTF?). Meanwhile, corporations are allowed to get away with this garbage. Yeah, there's nothing wrong with world... civilized my ass.
As far a MS is concerned, those *are* sales. The retailer may or may not actually hand the product off to a customer, but Microsoft doesn't benefit from that subsequent retail transaction.
What the hell are you talking about they don't benefit? You MUST be kiddin' me? If MS were to "ship" 5million, but only sell 1million, you don't think it'll have ANY ramifications on MS' gaming business?! Third party developers want to know how many people actually have the console. They can care less how many consoles MS makes, or how many consoles are sitting in a store. They need to sell games, and games are not purchased unless someone owns the console.
I thought the next cool thing was to offload the physics to a dedicated physics processor so that you'll have more cpu cycles for better AI. Heck, it says so on Ageia's frontpage! "The next big thing to hit PC gaming.":)
Perhaps it works the other way around. Children who are spoiled and greedy DEVELOP elevated levels of monoamine oxidase A as a result.
Hmmmmm... seems to be backwards for me then. I didn't have much growing up, parents immigrated from Vietnam with kids in tow. Toys were scarce as a kid. But as an adult with money to spend, I find myself compensating for my lack-of-toys childhood.
You guys BOTH missed the first (more important point)... sell it to a Japanese company:) The size thing was more a joke, and yes, I'm fully aware of how big the PS3 is projected to be (remember.. nothing is final yet.. it's final when they start churning them off the assembly line).
What the Japanese don't like is an American console.:)
Microsoft needs to sell it's Xbox division to a Japanese company. Said company will shrink the Xbox360 to human sizes, and THEN is might outsell the wonderswan;)
These are US only numbers. Not worldwide. Look at the current handhelds, DS is only slightly ahead of the PSP in North America, where as in Japan, it's not even a race. (The old phat DS is almost outselling the PSP, and the DS Lites are outselling the phat DS 7:1!!)
I'm betting simular results for the Wii at the beginning. It'll be competitive here in North America, but will eat japan up right from the get go. Globally though, the numbers will look MUCH different.
... The problem Sony has neglected to contemplate is that this Playstation is not launching in the same conditions as the previous versions of the brand. It is not the first to market with the new generation of console. This is crucial, because now Microsoft is already ahead of the curve...
I'm not a Sony fanboi or anything (in fact, I'm a self proclaimed Nintendo Whore). With that out of the way.
Umm.. the article says the "big" money maker is the little known guy making upwards of high 6 figures or low 7 figures. But then it has John Carmack on that list as one of the guys that work for big companies that don't make that much.
Whoever wrote that article isn't too smart. a) John gave away one of his ferraris, how do you think thresh got his start? b) as a hobby.. he builds rockets! That's not a cheap hobby.
"I should say that after Doom II and Quake releases the id Softwareper has been not so poor a company, I could say , that its personnel have been prospering. All of them have had a lot and having been pleasing themselves with some nice things. John Carmack, for example, likes cars very much. That's why he first bought one Ferrari, then another, then... In short it happened what should have happened : there were no more place in his garage. That's why good old John decided to make a good thing: to give back to the fighting society, that he owns his financial success to, one of his splendid cars asa a competition prize. And then to start filling his garage up with cars all over again."
He had so many ferraris he didn't have space to keep them all! Sounds like he's doing pretty good to me:) Plus, iD is still a pretty small company.. I remember reading once that everyone that worked there was a millionaire! Maybe urban legend? Who knows.
Anyways.. I'm not saying it's not possible to make big money as an indie game maker.. I'm just saying, you might want to think a little or perhaps research before you make statements like the escapist did. It reduces credibility.

Or maybe I'm just getting old.
this will really help out those who wouldn't know a DVI from an HDMI from a component cable.
I doubt anyone plunking down $600+ for the PS3 is NOT going to know what those inputs are

Nope. MS does not benefit from the subsequent sale.
Right, cuz things like this looks oh so good on MS.

Shipped = Sold
Riiiiight.
Ask Microsoft how many units they shipped to Japan. And guess how many units have SOLD in japan. Nice try.
Home Entertainment division lost about $1.2 billion for the last year.
They're on track to lose $4+ billion for this generation console. That's their goal right?! Just like the last one?!

No it's not. Xbox 360 will get some exclusive downloads, but the game itself will be PS3 and 360.

The biggest games-related event of the year is about to start. That's what's going on. It should die down again after E3.
Even so
