From the article: The team labored for years and made critical decisions that enabled Microsoft to beat Sony and Nintendo to market with a new box, despite a late start with the Xbox in the previous product cycle.
When I read that.. the only thing I could think of was: made critical decisions == compromise quality. Hahahahaha. We all know the production problems and quality problems the 360 had / is having.
It may take ten seconds to create a subdomain, but, it takes ages for dns propagation.
Ummm.. it's been 3 days since they announced it. I've registered many domain names before, it doesn't even take that long for a domain, let alone a Nintendo controlled sub-domain. (You see the word 'sub' in there?)
Go register for dyndns.org.. and tell me it takes 3 days.

Well duh?! When was that last time you saw a successful business model where you sue the pants out of your customers?:)
I know its kind of offtopic but I don't understand why microsoft doesn't act like every other console maker and make a leaner looking lower priced version of the original xbox...which I might actually be tempted to purchase.
It's actually the reason why they rushed the 360. They were bleeding money from the first XBOX. Remember, they basically were buying parts from other people to build the Xboxes. They didn't "own the silicon" as people have been saying about it. They probably COULDN'T build a new version of the XBOX if they wanted to. Their relationship with Nvidia is dead.
Knowing that, why do you think they were in such a rush to release the 360? I've read from gamer mags that they're speculating that the XBOX will cease production in Feb. 2007. Meanwhile, the PS2 is still selling very well.
This is also the reason why the PS3 is being rushed to launch this year as well. Sony (these are now just my opinions) had no intention of releasing PS3 this year. They didn't need to. PS2 is still doing very very well. Why would they release the PS3 (or even announce it) at the cost of their own PS2 sales. The 360. Because of Microsoft, we've just sped through the last generation faster than anyone really wanted to. I'm willing to bet that Sony wanted to iron out Blu-Ray before launching or even announcing the PS3.

That really hurt them at the beginning. I wonder if it affected the total number of possible sales?
Hopefully MS again recognizes its hardcore fans who acquired the 360 early in the production cycle will expect some sort of compensation for their willingness to purchase a console with apparent heat/performance issues.
In other words, you want to be paid (instead of paying for) to be a Beta tester?:)
I thought the march sales numbers were like 25% lower than year ago numbers? That's a decline isn't it?:)
Anyways, you're absolutely right about Nintendo actually making money vs. MS and Sony. The important thing about all these numbers is this:
March saw lower sales vs. a year ago. However, Nintendo posted profits WAY above what they expected. The shares have been soaring as of late.
That in a nutshell tells me that Nintendo is doing something right, and they're actually expanding the market the way the stock market likes companies to do. And they're rewarding Nintendo too. However, for some reason, the gaming sites et al seem to always peg Nintendo as "going downhill". I don't get it. There's only one conclusion I can come up with for this oddity. These gaming sites must all be paid (well.. maybe not all) by the likes of MS and/or Sony in some way so it's beneficial for them to bash Nintendo. I think we're getting a very good glimpse of what Nintendo's going to be offering. I play on the DS wifi network every day. It's amazingly simple, fast to connect, and no lag to speak of. I think it's a pretty darn good preview.
I guess this is what mean when they call Microsoft a 500lb gorilla bullying their way into whatever market they feel like dominating? I don't know any company that has deep enough pockets to go through this much effort to gain foothold in a particular region. (Albeit, a very important region). I would really like to know how much money they've spent in the Japanese marketon marketing and development. I heard they really beefed it up for the original 360 launch because of the dismal failure the original xbox was in Japan. Only to see it fail even worse. Hmm.. maybe you can't just through money at 'culture' and expect to win them over after all?
Hardware wise, in Japan, the DS is cleaning house. (And even more so now with the DS Lite is out). But in the North American market, it's a more even race.
Software wise, in Japan, the DS continually has 7-9 titles in the top 10 software sales charts. That's incredible if you ask me. I don't know of any place that tracks North American software titles by system, but if Japan is any indication, then it sounds like people are buying the PSP for other reasons than games.
What does this mean? Well, it's reported that the PSP sells for a loss, with the hope of game sales to help the bottom line. But if people are only buying the psp to do other things like rips movies/tv shows and listening to music and playing home brew software, that means software sales aren't going to be as high as they want/need to recover hardware costs. Is Sony worried about this situation. I think they are. Just look at all the trouble they're going through to get new firmware out there that'll prevent people from running their homebrew stuff.
Hmm.. I think I lost my point somewhere in there.:) Let's just summarize with this:
It seems to me that people are buying the DS for playing games and since games make Nintendo money, it's no wonder they're the best looking gaming company financially. Meanwhile, the psp continues to sell to those people who just want a gadget to play around with. I wonder if Sony is making money on the PSP at all?
IGN, meanwhile, is rumourmongering that Halo 3 will also make an appearance. Not only that, they say, it's slated for a March 2007 release.
Hmmm.. it'll be released well after the revolution (at best). I wonder what will happen if the revolution indeed does revolutionize fps games on the console?
...As for the added cost for consoles, I think it has to do less with the licensing, and more to do with the statement that the console makers made a while ago about games costing more in the next generation...
Ummmm.. This I certainly don't understand. We've heard the arguments about higher-res next gen. consoles, more texture details, more time to create all the hi-def artwork blah blah blah.
Answer me this: Most [gamer] PCs can and do play in higher resolutions than 1080i. Some games just stretch textures sure, but in general, if we use the same argument as for the console, then shouldn't the PC version cost more?

Man, your windows is so complex cuz it requires at least a Pentium.
Here's the kicker, if you actually READ the article, it's not even focused on the running speed of windows compared to everything else. It's saying because of all the legacy support, that adding any features requires so much work and testing to make sure it doesn't break anything else for the last 20 years of windows programs. And because of this it's "slow" in terms of being able to add features or to innovate.
If you want a real comparison, why don't you take the requirements for Vista which isn't even out, but might have some of the features Mac OS X already! And guess what the requirements for Vista is going to be?
Has anyone thought about the amount of money they're bringing in with this single game?! It's phenomenal! Let's do some quick rough math to see what the numbers look like. They report over 6,000,000 currently paying subscribers. At $15USD/mth, that's about $90,000,000 / month! (Yes, indeed, that'd be over $1,000,000,000 (billion!) a year!!)
That's just plain crazy.
Anyways, my point? Well, with all that money, you think they'd be able to do something about it. Perhaps they're too busy swimming in said pile of cash.:)
Anyways, I'm not totally bashing them, afterall, I *AM* a paying subscriber as well:) (Well, not currently.. taking a break. Will be back though) I remember at the beginning, the population grew so fast (unexpectedly to them) that they had to stop taking new subscribers. I thought that was very honest of them to admit they can't handle it and hold new subscribers so as to not ruin the game for everyone else. If they still can't handle the load, why aren't they doing that again? (Or maybe a couple of million subscribers ago?)
But is the world of nerd news dying? Where's all the nerd news? I'm a gamer and all, but half of todays stories on /. are about games? What's going on? Did /. discover that the ads for games are worth more or something?
Anyone can crack the market if they're willing to take a $4,000,000,000 hit! (that's 4 Billion in case the zero's were blinding you)
The real questions are: a) can the 360 turn a profit? b) how long will the shareholders allow them to bleed money into this "project"?

Has anyone thought about the amount of money they're bringing in with this single game?! It's phenomenal! Let's do some quick rough math to see what the numbers look like. They report over 6,000,000 currently paying subscribers. At $15USD/mth, that's about $90,000,000 / month! (Yes, indeed, that'd be over $1,000,000,000 (billion!) a year!!)
:)
:) (Well, not currently .. taking a break.
That's just plain crazy.
Anyways, my point? Well, with all that money, you think they'd be able to do something about it. Perhaps they're too busy swimming in said pile of cash.
Anyways, I'm not totally bashing them, afterall, I *AM* a paying subscriber as well
Anyways, just my observations.
