  1. I know what that's called on What The RIAA Gets Out Of File Sharing · · Score: 1

Nope that's called ILLEGALLY DISTRIBUTING FILES and that DID cost them 10,000 cd's they MIGHT have sold. It's kinda like showing a movie publicly. Can't do it without permission from the owner(s) of the movie. People you see handing out promo cd's and things of that nature are supposed to have permission from the copyright holder to distribute that item. It's usually the copyright holder's marketing department that decides to just randomly give out promo items. In that case they know they are protentially losing some sales but they can write it off on taxes. If you do it without thier permission you have potentially done financial harm.

That'll be $150,000 per cd you handed out but if you swear to never do it again and sign this admission of guilt we'll let it go for $8000, unless of course you are a 12 year old girl living in the ghetto, then it's $2000.

Actually I've been using it this past summer and when it worked it worked well. It had this annoying habit of going down about every 2 or 3 days. And it also isn't a "competitor" to freenet--it's a "companion". You surf the FreeNet boards looking for posts about new files going up and then log into IIP and DL. Worked alot more efficiently than just FreeNet alone cause half the time you'd get only partial files downloaded using the standard FreeNet keys. So when joined together FreeNet was used to announce the new (usually temporary) chat rooms, IIP into the room, get your stuff, and then get the fuck out. You'd also see all the posts going up about IIP going down and then everyone posting when it came back up. IIP and FreeNet were a pretty good combo in my book and I hope this new version will work as well as the old one but have a better amount of stability. This new version could very well be a better solution to encrypted data exchange.

What you should be doing is running one at a time and keep the others in a safe place until you need them. Though you can bet that your processor is gonna be way too slow to run any future apps so you should probably start hoarding software too.

I want to be a Linux fan but there is no Linux company that will get off their ass and make a version where I don't have to compile shit. The end user should not have to recompile the kernel. Linux has a great future but that is the FUTURE. AMD needs an OS NOW. Since linux can't do it who else will? M$. 1) IIRC big businesses ARE the number 1 buyer of computers in the world.

    2) More than likey other company's will not make non DRM compliant hardware because they actually WANT TO SELL IT. As I understand the situation it COULD be possible to make DRM CPU's disable non compliant hardware due to not having the sacred hardware key.

    3) As I understand it, the CPU could refuse to load a non DRM approved OS. I think this is the *Nix guys current fears about this technology. I seriously doubt there are enough people using *Nix to justify AMD, VIA, etc, making real easy to use working plug N chug versions of linux and making thier CPU's NONDRM compliant. If they refused DRM then they'd be on thier own to fight M$/Intel and I doubt sales would overcome the software development, advertising, and education required to make Linux a viable desktop option. I for one would not buy an AMD/VIA PC that could only run Linux cause Palladium said no DRM-no install. Linux isn't developed enough for that yet though I hope one day it is. Also either /. or Tom's Hardware Guide mentioned that AMD was on this TCPA comittee. So I doubt they are gonna say "Fuck you m$"

This kind of shit erks me beyond belief but they are monopolies and history so far has proved the gov'ment ain't gonna do squat about it. I/we also can't just keep using our old hardware either. Stuff break especially HDD's and ATAPI devices. No manufacturer is gonna keep making this old stuff for us. People want the latest greatest stuff with the shinest eye candy available and they don't care if it "works fine". You don't see new Commodore 64's, Amiga's, or Atari's around anymore do ya? Non up-to-date PCs will fall under the same problem. Soon our stockpile of old parts will dry up until only scarce quantities exist and only a few have them. Classic cars have this same problem--It's damned hard to find parts for Straight 12 Dusenbergs anymore. Only a few still exist. Eventually only a few PCs will exist.
