3. Re:Fuck it on Tension Between Record Labels And Digital Radio · · Score: 1
Fuck it. With the huge steaming crock of garbage being the radio as-is, I don't even want to listen to it. Commercials everywhere, songs fading into each other or DJs talking over the song, or even just the song being cut off early. I don't want to listen to partial songs, I don't want to listen to annoying nagging people in between songs or overlapping songs. I don't want to listen to the shitty selection most stations play, especially considering that they only play singles and never any of the other tracks on an album. There are some great tracks that have never even been aired, probably, or at least 1% of the time when they're not recycling singles. But that's AM/FM radio.

You're not alone. For some years now many people have been abandoning FM radio for internet radio because of at least a few of your feelings. The RIAA making a stink about internet radio is nothing new; back in 2002 they were attacking internet radio directly (setting their sights on SHOUTcast), now they're looking at satellite radio.

There's nothing new to see here: same old RIAA -- albeit under new leadership from 2002 -- trying to stifle yet another medium that proposes even the slightest threat to their monopolistic practices. Be sure to voice your opinion to your congressman.

  4. Re:Why the need for a movie? on Hitchhiker's Guide Reviewed · · Score: 1
I've always wondered why there is a need for a movie of this...the six TV episodes themselves make for a great story, and there is nothing more that a movie could do aside from shorten the storyline.
Serious? Money. The storyline is already written, others have tried to make it into a radio show and TV series, so they can take what they like and don't like based on what previously worked. And it's a space flick, so there's a valid excuse to shove in CG everywhere. Making a movie like this takes very small investment for a guaranteed higher return.

What's a record company supposed to do with an artist whose album has a slim chance of even going gold?

You're implying that we, the customers, make up for their lousy artists who don't sell by paying upwards of 5x what it actually costs to make a CD so they come out at least even?!? That's ridiculous! If such a low percentage or their roster have a tough time selling one million copies, this should be a clue to put more effort into finding better talent. Or realize that the days of artists selling ~25 million copies and making ~50 million dollars are coming to an end.

Diversify (there's that word again)! Instead of 10 different bands/groups sell 8 million copies, get 50 different [good] artists to sell even 500,000 copies.

I have *years* of C++ code from college, personal stuff and my business that I can't access -- not to mention GB's of other important information.

I think their biggest concern is that P2P makes the market for music fair for the consumer instead of biased in the RIAA's favor.

That is their biggest fear. Before the internet, before the MP3, and way before file sharing, the RIAA was in control of how, what and where music was distributed.

Now, we the consumers have the option. We can sample a CD and decide whether to spend up to $20 for it, whereas before it was gamble. It is much easier for us to hear artists that we would otherwise never have heard about, artists from other countries even.

These are the things the RIAA doesn't want. They're operating in an obsolete market and they're just trying to hang in there as long as possible or trying to prevent progress.

I glad to see that there is some effort being put into a compromise on this DRM thing. As much as I'd like the hardware/software companies to "just say no", it's not in their best interest to do that. For every company out there that says no, there are 3 others that can't wait to get in bed with DRM and profit from it.

I'm not so sure that voting does any good these days, with politicians being easily bought, but we can be heard with our dollars! Just Don't Buy It! We may be a minority in this but out dollars do count! The consumers should not have to comprimise to the products; the companies producing these products should be comprimising to the consumers' demands.

The only way I could see it benefit us webcasters is if it passes, all of us will cry not fair and it will be [even more] obvious that they're out to put webcasters out of business.

The bottom of the screen shows what's on TV with an extremely slow-scrolling bar showing channel by channel....just extremely slow so you have to stick around a bit to get from channel 5 to the channel you're interested in, channel 50.

tvguide.com has become my choice for finding out what's on TV now. The Prevue channel just irritates me too much.
