Ever notice how if a /. story is about anything Linux related that the zealots come out en masse and mod down almost 50% of the comments? This thread is a good example.

The growing trend of censorship by the left (which Linux advocates certainly qualify for) is frightening. We rely on the Left to provide progressive and enlightened contributions to the betterment of society. Censorship, in any form, flies directly in the face of this.

What are the Linux zealots so afraid of? To read that someone thinks their OS sucks? This is ridiculous. Regardless of your choice of an OS, there are millions of geeks ready and chomping at the bit to inform you that your choice sucks, is miguided, ignorant, facsist, criminal, etc...

Linux is failing because the Linux community has been growing increasingly dysfunctional and childish. It was a compelling option for a desktop OS a few years ago but for some reason things have gotten seriously broken in the open source world.

I am advocate for open source and the philosophy behind it. We need to leverage our democratic right for the public to own its own property. But there needs to be a serious reality injection into the open source community. They need to understand the dynamics that make software appeal to the mass market. They have utterly and completely missed the ball on this one, imho.

For the mainstream sites -- well, if such-and-such.com annoys you with their advertising model, there are dozens and dozens of alternative competitor sites that you can choose from. I'm sure that amongst those somewhere you will find the content you desire without the ads that you don't.

The most important factor for me being able to enter the zone is my emotional health. Any drama from home and such can quickly render me completely useless.

The second most important factor to me is people staying out of my face and just letting me work. When I get sucked into the "status meeting" bullshit and have a bunch of little weenies watching over my shoulder (and getting jealous and snitty and backstabbing) then that'll fuck my game up for sure.

Of course my work environment is important but my biggest complaint with this is the noise level that can rise in cubicle land.

Wish I could have a private office but I'm not a manager so I'm relegated to the "pit".

Finally, one last big thing -- I have a habit, particuarly these days, of compulsively look again and again at news sites, expecting the End of the World to happen at any second. This generally raises my anxiety level the longer I do it and requires some self discipline and control to break out of this habit.

The place for #3 in any market is always small, but obtainable. Linux now owns this space in the desktop OS market (with Apple being #2). Be failed to really develop themselves and build what is known as "mind share". How many people have even HEARD of Be? Not many.

As entertaining as it might be to generate conspiracy theories that somehow the big evil M$ "kept them down", there are other more down-to-earth reasons why Be has always been doomed.

Linux squashed Be. This is because Linux caught onto a market wave as it was happening (the open source movement).. Be tried to catch on to this as well but it was too little too late.

There are trusted authorities where you can get free private certs, I thought -- doesn't Thawte (hey I made a pun!) give free certs for personal email use?

That doesn't matter anyway because government regulation would (should) provide it for the people for a nominal fee (like they do a driver's license or passport)

My suggestion is quite simple: All SMTP servers should put in place policies which reject mail that is not digitally signed with a certificate trusted by a root authority. Personal email certs should be free, commercial (for marketing purposes) should cost a reasonable amount.

This would enforce accountability behind emails by guaranteeing the identity of the sender. Do this and things will clean up considerably, imho.

Although there is so much supposed controversy around global warming I for one can attest to witnessing it first hand growing up in Austin, Texas. Every year consistently since I was a boy the summer temperatures have hit new record highs and for longer and longer periods of time. Last summer there was three weeks where the daily high temp did not drop below 100.

Twenty years ago it was not unusual for the 90s during the summer but 100 rarely hit and only for a day or two.

Also, we had a real live swimming hole near where I lived. Although it was always dry during the summer, in the spring year after year it was full of nice cool fresh water.

That stopped happening ever since the late 80's and it is now a perpetual stink hole of stagnant run off water.

We need hydrogen and we need more nuclear power plants and we need them NOW! At the rate things are going, we are going to have MAJOR PROBLEMS in the year 2020.

And I'd personally rather run the risk of a nuclear meltdown in a rural area than thousands of fossil fuel burning powerplants filling the atmosphere with God knows how many thousands of tons of carcinogens (sp?) per year.
