  1. Re:I am quite looking forward to this... on Douglas Adams Written Dr. Who Episode Goes Into Production · · Score: 1

I think he wrote 3 total One was called "Pirate Planet" or something like that. Another was called "City of Death", but it was actually written under a pseudonym. The third was this one, Shada, which was never finished due to a strike IIRC. He did serve as a script editor for Dr. Who for a season. BTW, I did own "Shada" on videotape. The BBC released it some years back with Tom Baker narrating the missing bits

  2. Re:I don't get it... on Apple Won't Be At Macworld Boston · · Score: 1

Boston, apart from the "Big Dig" is generally much less of a run-down dump than NYC. At least from what I've seen of both cities.

For logistics- It's much easier to get from Logan airport to the new convention center than from any of the NY area airports to Javitz. Both convention centers are close to major rail hubs. I don't think that's a problem Macworld was held in Boston for many years, the reason said they pulled out was that Boston at the time didn't have a big enough conventiion center.

The only things I can see going for NYC over Boston are its bigness, its "center of everything" status, and maybe a desire to not hurt the city economically any furthur following Sept 11, 2001.

  3. Sure on Star Wars Producer Says Box Office is Doomed · · Score: 1

You don't need to spend big bucks to make a good movie.

Clerks, Blair Witch, My big fat Greek Wedding- all low low low budget flicks that made many times their initial investment.

But the Hollywood mentality is that you need to spend millions and millions on marketing, paying a premium to get big names to star in, and in Lucas' case, spend the GDP of several small countries on special effects. Why? Because the movies themselves are too lame to stand on their own.

If things change and you can't recoup the $500 million you spent on the picture because people don't want to pay $20 per ticket to see it in theaters, then you need to adjust, not whine. Piracy has affected Tapes, CDs, computer games, and VHS for years. DVDs are only resistant because of their sheer size, but other industries
can survive despite piracy, so can the movie industry

  4. Re:I dont understand how they could have missed th on Generation Wrecked · · Score: 1
What a stupid generation I belong to. Thinking that the baby boomers wrecked it for us and we're worse off than all that have gone before us. Yet, I think not everyone in my generation whines and complains. It's just that we're too busy making good, or at least, careful choices to be noticed.

Speaking as a Gen-Xer, born in '71. I didn't know that we were so whiny, unhappy and wrecked. Sounds like the writer had an idea for a story, and went out to try to find people to fit the mold for quotes.

  5. Re:Speeding up? on Resume Tips For Jobs · · Score: 1

P/E IS a bad way to measure stocks because it doesn't a number of things into account, like debt levels, potential opportunity, impending doom, etc. The only think P/E can tell you is how in demand a particular stock is. And that won't even give you a clue as to whether it's a good investment, think Cisco, Enron, etc.

Dividends have fallen out of favor over the past decade because investors preferred growth stocks that reinvest their divedend. Now the tide has turned and dividends have started coming back in vogue again. Look for companies that can afford to pay them to pay more of them.

Price to book is more interesting, because book value is the estimated value a company would fetch if all their assets were liquidated. But it doesn't tell you if a company is making or losing money and a number of other things.

In short none of these metrics are useful on their own for measuring stocks. People who use them to argue that the bear hasn't reached bottom are ignoring the fact that they are comparing the current conditions to previous AVERAGES. Not all bear markets end with an average P/E of 15, some were higher, some were lower. Think about this, the average bear market lasts 18-20 mos. We've already shattered that. If this bear doesn't stop at 18 months, then why should reason that it will stop at 15 p/e, 4.5% yield, etc?

It will end when the conditions weighing down the market improve, when we see solid economic data, better earnings, no more Enrons, less uncertainty over Iraq and terrorism.

For me, the an online digital music service should have these features. 1) Pay a small fee per song, no monthly subscription fee. 2) Don't force me to use Windoze or Mac to use your service 3) The digital music format should be something that can be played on many devices and players. 4) No self-destructing music formats.

It won't fry but the &*@#$@ Macrovision will
prevent you from watching anything through your VCR.

I was extremely irate that I had to shell
out an extra $30 for a box just to watch DVDs because my older TV (at the time) only had the cable inputs, and of course DVD players use video/audio output plugs. Which my TV doesn't have, but my VCR does. Worse the RF modulator box made everything look washed out.

It was at this point that I realized that the anti-DMCA crowd were more than just file-swapping pirates. I mean DVD vendors are assuming that I
was a pirate even though all I wanted to do was watch DVDs with my existing hardware.

  12. Good reasons not to use Word attachments on RMS: Putting an End to Word Attachments · · Score: 1

The problem with some of RMS's reasonings and language is that they will be lost on many people who have no desire to see source code, or may not even know what source code is.

The reasons that we can give people to not use word that most people will understand are simple:

    1) Word docs can carry Viruses
    2) By sending in Word format, you may be forcing the recipient to buy or upgrade MS Word when they have no desire to do so, if they want to read attachments like this, therefore sending corresponce in Word form, it is possible that the recipient will either ignore it, or possibly even become aggrivated
    3) It is in your best interest to promote the disuse of Word in email, unless you enjoy paying for forced upgrades to Word every year or two.
4)Acceptable alternatives to Word docs include HTML, PDF, RTF, and TXT. MS Word can produce many of these formats.

We're not asking people to stop using Word, we just ask them to learn the "Save As" function.

But why stop at Word? I can deal with most word attachments with some alternative, but Excel and Powerpoint files are a bigger annoyance!
