They were doing the research 5 years ago, and stopped over 4 years ago. It doesn't look like they were taking a really serious look at it anyway. How much data can they really get from 200 tests?
At least when I was in Houston, Spring had one of the desirable school districts.
Anyway, how stupid is this. Spring spend $180,000 just to implement this system, just so a mom can find out if her child got off the bus or not. Do these people really have that much money to spend on technology that isn't even that useful? This could have been done 15 years ago with a simple bar code, or magnetic strip. RFID is just the most expensive possible way of acheiving some really strange goal of aleviating some sort of strange middle class angst.
Well, let's see, the price of college in the US continues to explode
Yahoo Story. Meanwhile, as best I can tell (please let someone know what the real price is) Indians can receive an MBA from IIT for less than $480/semester......
Maybe the answer to the question is looking at how India is subsidizing their college student's education, and actually... dare I say it.... slashing the costs of colleges in the US.
How can the US possibly compete in an environment when education costs are 30x more expensive... not to mention that all of the expenses of living in the US are 100x more expensive.
Maybe it's time to just slash the cost of housing/education/taxes by 90%. That would solve everyone's problems....
So, you paid approximatly $200,000 for your education, and you are going back to India to earn $20,000 per year. Tell me how the economics work on that?
But he could justify spending $12,000-$15,000 buying 6 machines for home use?
And all of these machines required a full office suite?
He could always use Wi-fi to compose presentations in the bathroom instead of needing a his and hers computer terminal there.
At Oracle World, Craig Barrett pulled out a automobile designer, I can't rember who it was. But the designer basically said that they deconstructed a Ferrari to create their new production car. How is this different than software engineers deconstructing other applications?
Why does anyone need to be in the US? What does a lawyer do that requires them to be in the US? Why do sales engineers need to be in the US? Since we are in a knowledge based world, shouldn't companies be able to just be completely open up offshore?
Just wait until they tell you that they can't accept the e-mail that you sent because it's not in the right format.
But at least their margins will be up.
In addition, there are good samaratan laws which say that you can't be held liable for trying or not trying to help out the 5'1 woman. So, if you tried to rescue the woman, and and she drowned as you tried to help her, you couldn't be held liable, as long as you weren't trying to kill her off.
One of the interesting parts of the LBJ biography was how he made sure that his staff replied in a personal letter to all mail and phone messages.
I would suspect that current pols don't give a $*()@*#)( about their e-mail or messages anyway. Local officials are too powerless for most people to communicate with. State and National pols are too busy talking to lobbyists and paying attention to the polls and statistics to worry about what Joe Schmoe is ranting about today.

Not to mention the earlier generations of books like Tom Swift and Tom Corbett.
Ah, back in the days where engineers where at least a bit appreciated.
Don't allow your students to use a computer in the classroom. I've taught computer classes, where the computer was a necessity, and at least 30% of the class would not pay attention to lectures, because they were too busy surfing the net, answering e-mails, or IMing each other.
If you absolutly have to allow computers, make sure that they are turned off when you are having classroom discussions.

Just doesn't have the same ring to it....
Great, then they should be paying me enough not to need 3 jobs.

I think it is actually being translated into:
"Use what is free, whether or not it's the right tool for the job."
Ok, this wasn't the question, but WHY does every 6th grader in the state need a laptop?
Isn't Michigan having a budget crunch like every other state?
But he could justify spending $12,000-$15,000 buying 6 machines for home use?

And don't forget that it's not just states. In a lot of cases, sales taxes are charged at a locality basis.
Now if they would just find us jobs and get our kids educated, it might start to feel a little less like the 3rd world.

Good thing that China has all those cheap well trained IT personnel.

You're right, in fact, why do you need an OS at all? People were using green screens and a central server for years to check e-mail and telnet.
If you absolutly have to allow computers, make sure that they are turned off when you are having classroom discussions.
Wasn't he running for president at some point? So, I'm thinking that he DOES actually care about his national reputation.
Well, actually, my job security comes from trying to maintain the code written by a 50 year old programmer...... (and yes, I am north of 35)
