Ok, some people have expressed some very basic concerns in regards to emergency situations. I would like to point a few simple things out.

    1) House locks keep people OUT not IN, which is the goal here as well. I'm sure there would be simple mechanical method of opening the door in case of emergency, like turning the same deadbolt style lock that exists now. Difference is, this has the option of being opened from the outside using some tech and a motor.
    2) LOCKS KEEP EMERGENCY PERSONNEL OUT NOW. This is why we carry such things as a rabbit tool, spreaders, and the traditional set of irons (axe + halligan). We break the damn lock. No problem.

Ok, so I came up with two simple points. But they are good ones nonetheless :)

    PDF.

The company I work for has ms servers, novell netware, etc, etc. We use AutoCAD, and desktops range from 2k to xp. We NEED compatibility with other companies file formats, and AutoCAD is the standard for architectural design. Sure, theres BricsCAD, etc, and I'm toying with the idea (I may buy a license for me at home... I dont have anything MS in my house. At all.), but it comes down to being able to share files quickly and easily.

You know what we've found? Office file formats tend to screw up when shared AMONG EACH OTHER! Yes, Office 97, 2000, XP, 2003, etc.. they tend to screw up dealing with their own native file format. So how could I possibly use that?

Besides, I usually don't want anyone outside my company editing a document I send them. So, PDF is a better idea. Not to mention I can create PDF's when I'm using OpenSuSe on the laptop, or SuSe/Gentoo/Fedora/Slack (sharing one machine - now that was annoying to set up) on my workstation. So, in short - I can make PDF with anything, and I know it can be read by anyone I send it to - or I tlel them to install a reader. They should have one already anyways.

So your worries about office formats? Hell, 80% of MS OFfice users can't read MS Office files...

(NOTE: Much like parent, "80%" number resolved from rear digestive pipework, left-hand side.)

I have several distros happily sharing the same desktop, with SuSe on my roommates systems, Fedora on my tablet, OpenSuSe on my laptop, and Knoppix as my live cd. Now, while I do believe each distro has its place, and I find that certain distros are better than others for particular purposes, this is not to say another distro can't perform in a similar way. As such, I wouldn't ever frown on any distro that does what it says it can (However, there are a few I wouldn't even allow near any of my boxes, like Xandros, which failed (retail version, in box, btw, bought by my roommate on impulse) during installation on four different pc's, 2 of which currently have SuSe, the others being OpenSuSe and Fedora.).

Well one point there too, is what about used games? Personally, I own an N64, Gamecube, XBox, and PS1. The PS1 is modded, so I could play some import DBZ games that I picked up from a somewhat local Korean flea market (I'm your typical caucasian... so I stand out... but they love me, good ppls :)..). Just to note, I still play them here and there, which is why I bought the game.

Also, I'm a frequent visitor to GameStop... I go there with a few games I've beaten (maybe several times over) and am now bored of, trade them in, pick out a few titles off the used rack, and go home to beat those. Some games I like and can play over and over... those ones I keep. The others, I beat and take back to GameStop to trade in. For me, since I don't have an abundance of gameplay time, this comes out cheaper than renting.

Now, if I was interested in import titles, I'd mod anything I have. It just so happens I haven't exhausted the supply of the US games available just yet, and haven't seen an import Ijust had to have, so I have not modded yet... but I will. I don't back up, because I usually don't keep games for all that long. I also have never played an illegal copy of anything on any console that I own.... but I have screwed with my hardware (including controllers). I bought it, and I'll do with it what I like.

I still watch cartoons, anime or not, and I am addicted to the Cartoon Network (well, more like was, since they changed the lineup). Now, I don't watch Saturday morning cartoons anymore. It isn't because I work, it isn't because I have something better to do - theres always TiVo or the good old VCR. The reason I don't watch them is they are horrible! I get bored within five minutes of these shows. Creativity is lost, theres no real enjoyment in watching them. The started off with the educational TV (which wasn't entirely bad), but the quality of the cartoons went down. Everyone obviously remembers Tennage Mutant Ninja Turtles... I had the whole collection of toys. My sister doesn't have ANY toys related to cartoons. What about Voltron? I had all of those toys as well. The list goes on... I loved plenty of toons. And while Pokemon became a fad for kids for a while, nothing really stuck. It isn't a good show, there's nothing in the episodes, no great story line, nothing to keep the viewers glued... And thats whats killing the Saturday morning toons. Crappy story lines.

For all the guys into biodiesel, we know better than to think a hybrid is the only way to go in alternative fuel sources. You can't forget about diesels. Mechanical problems have nothing to do with being a diesel engine, they have to do with the manufacturer. I've seen many 240D's and 300D's with well over 500k mi and running strong... because that is how long diesel engines last. In fact, now that I have more money, I'm going to upgrade... to another diesel, probably early 90's. The only other car I'd consider would be a VW diesel, I don't even think about buying a gas car anymore, it is a waste of time and money imho... The common term is biodiesel or greasel for the mixture. When used with new diesel engines, they actually run cleaner than a natural gas engine. Some have made their own biodiesel for as little as $.50 USD/gallon, for quite a large savings. In NJ, the price of diesel just went up about $0.10 USD... The primary considerations are seals, older rubber seals will break down and fail, spewing all over the place. The solution? Use newer plastic seals, they last much longer anyway. There is a power loss of appr. 5%, but on new engines you don't feel all that much of a difference.

I think there is one problem with that... in the US, we have sub-standard diesel. We have a much higher sulfur content than Europe, which is the reason for the odor. One of the reasons diesel in Europe costs more than in the US is that the process of removing more sulfur will cost more... and the US is roughly 5-10 years behind on sulfur content.

I won't hypothesize about oil companies, etc., but I will say - I drive a diesel. I will buy another diesel soon. If I could afford to, I would purchase a new VW diesel, simply because they run cleaner, better, and longer... the difference in speed and the difference in volume between diesel and gas engines have changed greatly, you can no longer hear or smell a difference (when comparing a modern gas to a modern CDI or HDI engine).

  19. Re:Biodiesel and California air on Alternative-Fuel Vehicle Recommendations? · · Score: 1

    Care of biodiesel.org:

The use of biodiesel in a conventional diesel engine results in substantial reduction of unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter. Emissions of nitrogen oxides are either slightly reduced or slightly increased depending on the duty cycle and testing methods. The use of biodiesel decreases the solid carbon fraction of particulate matter (since the oxygen in biodiesel enables more complete combustion to CO2), eliminates the sulfate fraction (as there is no sulfur in the fuel), while the soluble, or hydrocarbon, fraction stays the same or is increased. Therefore, biodiesel works well with new technologies such as catalysts (which reduces the soluble fraction of diesel particulate but not the solid carbon fraction), particulate traps, and exhaust gas recirculation (potentially longer engine life due to less carbon).
