Unfortunately lies are in the ears of the beholder, and this is about fundamental political ideology. In the long run Big Bucks will kill Net neutrality. Just like it is killing the public airways. Free is not a source of revenue for big industry. If file sharing could not be stopped by DRM.. well we will just throttle any un-trusted / unregistered connection to 75 Baud. I truly believe this is where this is going, and it Sucks
I have the Clear service, (the USB dongle and the Motorola Base station). My experience with it has been mixed. It works at 2+ to 4MB on the USB dongle at my work, which is in Carrollton TX 75007. However it has been unreliable at home (where I need it). Some times it runs at 3 or 4 MB but 50% of the time it is sub 1MB or zilch. Clear (part owned by Sprint) has promised that 2 more towers are due for activation in the area of my home. The date on this has slipped and I hope that it is not an empty promise. However to be fair and honest when I purchased the system the coverage map (some type of GOOGLE earth overlay was accurate and I knew that coverage was spotty in my home neighborhood. I am not in love with it but am not willing to abandon it yet. I do not have the FIOS available where I live (75218) and My DSL is a long way from the concentrator I am limited to about 1.4 to 1.5 MB on it. (AT&T). U-verse is not available (distance) The drag about this is that across the street the DSL runs fast and the U-verse is available, oh well
Not an off the shelf solution but.. A Delta IV is able to lift 6,275 kg to geosynchronous orbit. A unfriendly payload could be delivered. Doing this in under a year would be a real challenge. It would also be the most incredibly stupid thing to date as far as space debris issues. GEO is a very special orbit that exists in one plane. Not a good place for random bits.. Now if some bad guy living is a secret volcano with a white cat was to develop a launcher that would deliver, lets say 5 to 10 thousand kg of small bb’s into the GEO plane in ‘reverse’ orbit we could end the geosynchronous era for a long time
It is not that he is desperate; he is just stuck in his own reality. What the hell is art anyway? Is there any difference between this and the argument that modern art is not art? Or non-Classical music is not music? I have a good friend who has always liked blues music but can not consider that rap music is music. He does call it poetry. It is pointless to argue about some definition of art, in this case that it can’t have a winner. Art is what ever art is art to you in you own heart. If some one’s art is not only not to you own taste but not interpretable by you as art that does not define it as != art. Try this on, can art be interactive and if so what is (if any) the limit to interactivity?
These are the Same people that had the Audi 5000 series sedans in the mid 1980’s that also suffered “sudden unintended acceleration”. They would have been in there early 30’s back then.
Yeah, There was the wood absorbed minerals theory, and always the secret varnish theory. Personally I do not remember the urine theory. However that one kind of makes sense. Maybe it was unicorn piss.
"GM got such a bad rap on the diesel and for the most part it was unfair."
I vote to reword this to: It is a shame that diesel powered cars got such a bad rap from GM Excellence in Engineering. Historically I believe that GM does what the company I work for does. Use customers (unwittingly) as product testers. I would suggest that when any one quotes MPG figures from Top Gear for us ( on this side of the Pond) to remember, that those are Imperial gallons. Diesels do get better mileage than their gasoline counterparts, the fuel has more BTUs in it per gallon and the engine is inherently more efficient (produces less waist heat). Diesels are quite popular in Europe. Here in the USA the down side is that it is more complicated to meet the EPA Nox emissions(Added complexity and cost, Merc calls the technology for this Bluetech). Nox is more of a air quality problem here for us in North America, Just ask any asthma suffer about ozone in the summer time in North Texas.. and not to forget particulates.
Being a hardware type.. I found this an interesting post. I am evaluating the basic premise of the question. Dos the poster have the skills do design and or hack some existing device, produce a schematic and a BOM but just lacks the PCB layout experience or was looking for a near turn key solution for hardware from a concept?
There are threads here about various PCB houses that have limited layout software. This would assume that the poster can produce a schematic/BOM of a working device. And would also assume the ability to produce some kind of prototype (if some existing device could be modified I would guess some kind of hare ware hack). In the old days this would be called "blue wired". For most modern stuff I have found that 30AWG wire wrap wire is way to big. I use 34 - 40 AWG magnet wire. (the stuff that the insulation will cook off with a 'Hot' iron)
Good PCB layout tools are not cheap. However Eagle is affordable. The idea of some kind of a partner has been recommended and is a good idea.
I went with my Wife to the Micro Center here in Dallas about a month ago to look at various net book offerings. I had a talk with her about Linux on the Asus offerings. (We saw the Asus at J&R Music world last Christmas on out visit to New York.) We were considering purchasing one of the Asus models (with Linux and Open Office). When we got there, there was a spread of Asus models starting at about $325 and going upwards. The sales person pointed us toward the Acer Aspire 1 that was equipped with a 120GB HD, Intel Atom, 1GB RAM, Wireless, 3 USB ports, (smaller battery about 2.5 Hours), cheap WEB CAM, and (choke Win XP HOME). At first I would not consider it. No Not because of M$ but XP Home ?? My Wife's small business uses Win 2K and XP Pro, She owns full retail copies of Office 2K and unfortunately needs them (M$ Office in her environment). Up until this point I swore that I would never touch 'Home' any thing...However the Acer looked slick and was only $350 complete out the door..I removed a tone of 'cripple ware' loaded office 2K and it meets here needs. She doesn't have to fiddle with it. When she goes to a client she has access to here work and it fits in here purse. What can you do? It is cheap, and arguably disposable. The OS is... This same model was spotted at the local Costco for $275.00..I think that these will be the BIC lighters to small portable computers.
Well there is the silly part of this, some judge rules that gambling is illegal in Kentucky (I will bet that this spreads to other states in the "bible belt") and rules some DNS registration will have to be "surrendered".. good luck with that. However it has been pointed out about the legal status of collection of gabbling debts...This could get interesting and will be a litmus test on weather this is just political BS or a serious effort to have a impact on internet gambling. And if some ruling came out of this that it is not 'collectible', I for one would wonder just what that would really imply. No more VISA usage, I could see how in terms of a credit card that a state might be able to do this but a debit card could be more of a challenge for a state to regulate. I suspect that the judge will not go here, it will just be some silly ruling about DNS, then will be able to say "I did something but the heathens prevented enforcement of it" BTW are judges elected in Kentucky? This could be relevant information..
Follow the money, the ISP's are gonna' want a piece of the action for downloadable or streaming movies and TV. (Like Apple TV, Netflix and what ever). The big corporate entities are going to find a way to kill off what ever is left of net neutrality and unfortunately I don't think it is very far off. One possibility is you will be stuck with who ever your ISP has some kind of a contract with. (Read revenue sharing). At the end of the day it will be all you can eat but.. (don't eat too much, unless it is from out approved trough). It suks.
Currently, there is not a large percentage of internet scribers sucking major monthly downloads.. for those of us who are (use net) might be an example. But when the masses try to come to downloadable decent resolution video (whether it's Apple TV, Net Flix or now Amazon (resolution TBD)) the internet will need to support serious end to end bandwidth. The ISP-s are in a speed contest that started with all you can eat, but now that there is a threat that Homer Simpson might show up at the Shrimp Buffet counter the ISP-s are having second thoughts. Exactly just what would happen if 50% of the DSL, Fiber and Cable Modem subscribers in the USA all decided to download a movie at about 6 PM local time ? My intention is not to defend download CAPS, but something is gonna give..
..of the shrink Wrap EULA definitively ruled upon. Doubt if it is going to happen here. From TFA: "Psystar also this week said it is making Leopard OS restore disks available to its customers" "Psystar is definitely still shipping Open Computing products and we've introduced our restore utilities to enhance the computing experience for our customers at no extra cost." I think this kills it as a straight up EULA fight.
I remember what HP's culture was from the perspective of a user of fine test equipment (spectrum-analyzers RF-generators logic-analyzers distortion-analyzers) including using the technical support provided by HP (after sales) and less frequently involved in the purchasing process with the sales force of HP. For me, most of this experience started in the late 70's and continues today. However what I call HP is now Agilent that in my IMHO was the stupidest spin-off in the electronics industry.
HP was a company that would support any thing it sold even real old stuff... including making documentation available. (service manuals with schematics may not have been free but you could get one and it was not outrageous.)
There was always a voice at the end of the phone that was competent and could answer rather complex questions on the use and application of said equipment. (now, remember this is very post sale)
On the Sales side, equipment would be demo-ed and lent by the most competent and professional staff in the business. I never had any one in the pre-sales for and instrument LIE to me in any way. Would gladly inform me of the limitations of there products. (And in not a to boastful way would try to point out weakness in the competition but this was from pride and not BS. Never had an HP sales rep bad-mouth Tektronix for example.
I recently helped my wife purchase a multifunction printer from HP (LaserJet M3035 MFP). This is just big enough that these models are not stocked in stores like Best Buy, Microcenter, Frys and the like. We chose to purchase from the toll free phone number found on the HP website. The experience we had was appalling. I don't believe that I was ever told any truth about any thing during this experience. It started with slick double talk that would make a used car salesmen on the 3AM movie sick. (I already picked out the unit, and all that was needed to be done was to enter the job/sales order). The larger part of the stupidly encountered was that we were shipped 2 units (we only ordered 1). We refused delivery on the 2nd unit. Fortunately we use my wife's business American Express Card for this purchase, as far as the billing AMX fixed it. HP tried to bill us for both units, then backed off to the shipping costs.. (shipping was included in the purchase price at the time of purchases). Turned into a major fiasco .
A friend shared with me that they believe that this is due to the Compaq sales culture that HP 'got' from the merger/acquisition. I do not know if this is true but it is a far cry from the HP of yester year.
My last dealings with Agilent have been still good but is has deteriorated from the slandered set by the old HP.
Transparent society doesn't even make the cut of a Myth For transparent society to have a chance of reality one would need transparent government. Like that is gonna' happen...
Of long-term interest by the DOD. If the DOD got behind serious battery R&D it could be the beginning of major money to become available for the research. (Wishful thinking).
