  1. Ethical Journalism? on Consumer Groups Want To Tax Facebook To Save Journalism (vice.com) · · Score: 4, Insightful

If you want to have ethical journalism, how about not starting out by taking other people's money away to fund your own pet project? And how about reporting facts instead of speculation as news? How many times have we seen during the entire Mueller Russia hoax sensational headlines and "bombshell" statements from anonymous sources, with most stories ending with "So far no evidence of Russia collusion has been found." Apparently being ethical to these guys means writing all the agitprop that's unfit to print.

You can even see that with newer politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - she gets a lot of flak from the right, but you can watch a lot of video from her that is fairly reasonable, so the calls that she is crazy do not really stick.

Not sure who's calling her crazy, but from what I've seen, she's pretty dumb. I think she gets a pass because she's fairly attractive, and a useful idiot for their agenda. For instance, there's this gem: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrong on several counts about unemployment

There are dozens of similar claims she's made like this. As Murray Rothbard said "It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a 'dismal science.' But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance."

Crap like "Once Upon A Time" by the Moody Blues and "Tender Roni" by Bobby Brown. After a few weeks, I loathed those songs. At least most of the stuff they play at Starbucks when I go in there is unremarkable background noise jazz.

Maybe it's a lot of people reacting to this. I can't find the original quote, but this was from some random website:

Now, as you may have heard, Brie Larson recently said she wants to make the movie's press tour a little more inclusive so it's not just middle-aged white guys. In other words, the actress wants more women and people of colour in attendance. But her remarks have been taken out of context, and some fans believe that she's saying she doesn't want them to see the movie.

I remember reading the original quote, thinking it was a bit hostile toward white males. I think the text above waters it down a bit. I'll probably go see Captain Marvel, since it's part of the larger picture, and because I'm not thin skinned. One of the privileges of being a White Cisgendered Male, I guess.

This just in, Apple has handed over iCloud data over to law enforcement. Same Apple that said they never would, that refused to help the FBI get data from a mass shooter's phone in California. They now turned over data with a simple single request.

The Gateway Pundit article is misleading. Apple refused to unlock the phone of the shooters, but did turn over their iCloud information after being served a warrant. Same as they did with Stone. AppleInsider's story is more informative:

The information provided on Stone is the same type of information that Apple provided from the San Bernardino shooter's device from 2016 after a warrant was served. Unlike the San Bernardino iPhone 5C, a device unlock has not been requested for Stone's devices, nor has one been performed.

  22. People should however demand higher standards of the software they buy to entrust with critical aspects of their lives. But the fact is people are willing to accept poor standards in software, and make that choice on a regular basis.

We have the unfortunate situation where software developers can't predict every possible way things could go wrong, and many bugs tend not to surface even after testing. If Apple shipped & knew this was a problem, that would be one thing, if they didn't it's another.

  23. JavaScript is the best language for learning?

Yes. To get up and running with learning the basics, it is, especially since it's syntax is very similar to many other programming languages, like C and C++. That's the biggest reason I'd choose that as a learning language over Python. You can learn conditional logic, loops, arrays, strings, variable scope, functions, order of precedence, etc., without having to worry about learning strong variable typing, memory allocation, pointers or advanced data structures. Those subjects are all important, but they're just not necessary to learn the basics.

  24. I loathe Java only slightly less than I loathe Visual Basic. I just wish they hadn't changed the name from LiveScript to JavaScript for marketing purposes. Like any programming language, it has it's good points and bad points, but IMHO, it's the best language for learning programming fundamentals. All you need is a browser & a text editor.
