  1. Re:Little Guy Vs Apple - THE DETAILS on Just What is a Custom Configured Server? · · Score: 2, Insightful

My dispute is: Does selecting additional memory or disk drives really constitute a product that is "custom configured to your specifications". According to the defense that Apple used, even adding one stick of memory would have made it custom configured.

These servers are largely manufactured by machines, at a pretty fast pace. Humans are part of the process, but at a minimal level.. it's how prices can be kept down to a reasonable level. You know how this goes. When you want to upgrade the machine... Configure To Order / Build To Order ... that means someone has to crack open the box, unpack the machine, crack the server open, and manually do stuff to it to make it the way you asked for it... uncrack the server, and repack the box, uncrack the shipping box, and then send it to you. If you wanted a stock server, it would have gone from the assembly line to your door, most likely. Sorry your experience was not the one you were expecting.

If you're rooting for the crack of what's arguably the coolest legal music download system on earth, you're obviously not a musician, or have any respect for art whatsoever. Without any kind of relative perspective on what it means to create a piece of art, you're caving into consumerism in it's most idiotic form. You have no clue how hard it is to eke out a song, have the courage to release it to the world, then promote yourself tirelessly just to make ends meet. At some point, you have to stop looking at a mountain as a thing to blow up and just accept it as a beautiful part of our landscape.

  8. It's a toy... on Hercules USB DJ Console Reviewed · · Score: 1

As a occassional professional DJ a few years ago, an occassional professional soundman with my room shaking EV's, co creator of Quicktime Turntablefrom 1997 and as an owner of Final Scratch, I can tell you with fairly expert opinion that the $250 pricetag this new piece of hardware carries puts it smack dab into the "way too expensive toy" category.

Pro CD turntables that accurately simulate the platter of a vinyl turntable are anywhere from US$800-$1500. Technics 1200's (the 30+ year gold standard for dj'ing turntables) run anywhere from US$400-$750 each depending on who you get them from... a excellent mixer will cost you between US$50-$1000 or more.

FinalScratch is $500. It is a professional grade piece of equipment. It is not a toy. It's complex and responsive. It does what you expect it to. It costs that much money because it's worth it.

I dunno about this $250 new item. Who IS it for anyway? Obviously not pros, and at that price you can alternatively buy a console and a few games to occupy your time.

  18. Re:Independent film distribution on Windows Media 9 in Digital Theaters · · Score: 1

I'm torn on this, because I think a lot of people are able to make movies for a lot less money now, thanks to lots of cheap components like DV and easy to use video editing software.. which is good...

but on the otherhand, it could be bad, too... I definitely don't want to plunk down 10 bucks to go watch an indie movie that's of a quality that would be an equivalent to an average-mp3.com-quality song.

If digital theatres are going to be the future, and indie films are going to have access to more screens because of that technological leap, we should consider the need for an apollo-style project for the arts to build a website that's open to all, to submit and to adjudicate submissions... that way the best rise to the top of the ratings... take the ease of use to submit a rating from netflix and combine it with amazon's review format, and I think you'd have a government website that might be... cool?

As long as the funding went to inexpensive hardware infrastructure, and not on expensive proprietary servers and solutions... you could make even 10 million dollars go a long way with OSS.
