Look how far Linux has come with NO VC and thousands of individuals. Be is trying to carve too much of a nich and it won't survive in the long run. If you are already giving the masses the choice of Winblows, Mac, and Linux, what incentive is there to go with BeOS? I think it's a great OS, but it doesn't offer anything really new to me. I think Cablevision of CT *may* use them. My speeds were awesome until about MArch. Since then, service has sucked. Frequent outages (which usuall last a minute or two, but when you're playing Unreal online, it SUCKS!). Also, newsgroup access speed has slowed tremendously. I finally wrote to them last week and they have been having a "hardware problem" in my area. Uh, yeah, right... Anyway, Uploads "seem" to be OK from this end..... Wonder is DSL is available in my area... hmmmm......
For talking sense! Geez, I am wondering when Be will just fold. This OS really isn't going to go anywhere. Why? Look at the attention Linux is getting. Look at the astronomical numbers of new installations. Be's hype machine is GONE. Buh bye! What's the reason to install it? It still serves no new purposes. You have Linux. You have Mac. You have NT. Where does Be fit in? Their hey day was two years ago. "It's over, Johnny!"
No, actually, the only two times I've ever set foot in England were in-between flights to and from India and JFK. Try again. I was being serious, though. Perhaps, the second half of my comments are what have ticked off a few drunks. But I have never lived in fear of death for 10 days straight. Literally. I forgot to mention my connecting flight in India on Indian Airlines. Ever been in a 737 that literally BOUNCED on the runway, the pilot landed so hard and fast? No. But I have...... That was yet another example that the country simply isn't able to handle "modern" technologies.
You would not believe it. I was (and still am) shocked at the extent of pollution. There are no pollution controls or ways of dealing with garbage. Plastic is the worst thing. You see it all OVER the place. The air? Be prepared to recover for a month. Most "sewers" are open and run along the sides of the streets. It's really a society that is in no way, shape, or form ready or able to deal with most modern technologies. Being there is like visiting a living museum of humans' past. I don't mean to attack Indian people. I have many Indian friends and co-workers. It's just that the country itself is *so* uncivilized.
I hope you get out of there alive. I went to India for over a week last year and it was the most frightening experience of my entire life. DON'T commute between cities if you can help it. You want to know what fear is? Try being on LONG roads with NO traffic rules and drunk goods haulers.... I still have nightmares.... It's a beautiful place, but I wouldn't go back. It's extremely polluted and you're always getting conned. I kissed the ground of Heathrow Airport on my return trip....

It's nice to see Carmack considering OS X for his development. He's been saying that for a long time. It's obvious (to me) that he doesn't care much for development on NT (duh!). I know he has a bunch of SGI boxes he uses as well. How close is OS X to UNIX? Well, the kernal is basically BSD, if that helps any....
