Remember the 1201 and 1202 program alarms that occurred during the Apollo 11 lunar landing? This was caused by a "misconfiguration" of the rendezvous radar before flight which resulted in sending erroneous requests to the main computer...In this case the system was tested over and over but a last minute change caused the problem.
The key is to design the system to heal and recover without comprising the mission.
When dealing with space travel you have to expect the unexpected and plan for it. Anyone that thinks that with unlimited money and testing you can design a perfect system is delusional.
I use them to sleep and they don't have "active" cancellation. They work quite well for me on airplane, mowing the grass, snorning girlfriends, etc... They are low profile, comfortable and sound GREAT!
Well.... In my experience it may be what they find initially isn't that interesting......but in a year down the road they'll find the lesbo cheerleader locker room site and hit paydirt!
Shouldn't we make sure there isn't life there before we start contaminating it with earth germs... It would be a shame to "discover" life on mars only to find out it was actually something brought there by humans.
I use my MiniDisc player like an old tape recorder... You know "note to self." It makes it nice to be able to put in track marks and fast forward to relevent spots in the recording.
You might be seeing my old MD pop up on eBay soon... hehehe.
What's with you people and your Beagle jokes. Why haven't people realized yet (After we've been talking about this for weeks) that the MER landing sites are very far away from Beagle and that nothing would be gained anyway from visiting the "crash" site. I still see/.ers think Beagle was a US venture or don't realize that MER is an international effort (Although NASA paid for most of it.)
I thought./ posters were informed... but I guess I am new here.
Or at least make the plans and parts list available.
This might make a good fundraiser.. hell I would pay for the Plans. I was watching the self test video and got really WIDE eyes... I want one of these things.
On 26 December, if all goes well and if a single workstation running Linux proves itself up to the task of running a space probe, the world will learn that "the Beagle has landed."
The workstation in question is installed at the Lander Operations Control Centre, part of Britain's new National Space Center in Leicester, England. It uses something called SCOS (Spacecraft Control Operating System) which sits on top of Linux, and there are two more Linux-based systems as back-up.
The "Beagle 2 Mars Lander," according to a report this morning at whatpc.co.uk, is scheduled to separate from the European Space Agency's Mars Express rocket on Friday, December 19, and is reckoned to have only a 50:50 chance of success. No fault of Linux - the actual landing site is one imponderable factor that could affect comms detrimentally if the Beagle 2 is unlucky. If all goes well, the landfall will take place at 08:51 EST on Christmas Day, December 25.
I wouldn't think that the Apollo CSM's are ready to build. Just think of all the improvements that could be intergrated in to that design!
With all of our Technological advances in the last 30 years we could build a seriously sweet spacecraft. It's a shame the politicians of this country seem to have no "vision" when it comes to Human Spaceflight or really the future of mankind at all! Imagine the changes in religious and political attitudes when Human Spaceflight is availible to the common man. At the current rate it won't happen for a few hundred years!
Actually it absorbs the radiation caused by radar. The paint also absorbs the intense heat caused by the speeds it can fly.
You DO NOT want to be anywhere near that thing right after a flight. I've heard of airmen becoming very sick and disabled because of post-flight exposure. [The AF has special post-flight hangers for the aircraft because of that]. However given enough time it's safe to go near [and even touch].
They may work like SINCGAR's do. Alternating frequencies at a rapid pace. (This is a very non-technical description... I don't know the tech behind these devices)
Yes! When I took over our HP System the old admin gave out the su password to EVERYONE! Then guess who has to be an asshole and tell everyone they can't install their own webshots anymore.
"I recently took a job managing an all Windows network...."
Run...... run fast!!!
No.... seriously good luck. I went from a pure HP-UX enviroment to a Windows one... It's really fun to try and script mass file renames among other things
"Effort" isn't something people that download files like this are known for.
I see 14 year old with 120Gig HD's and it's full of broken downloads, the latest p0p craze and Pr0n in "Hidden" Directorys. Most of them just download every possible version and never take them off...
Actually with the predictive text and several months of use you get pretty good at it. I can do it without even looking at the screen for the most part. There are many situations (Movie Theatre, Dinner etc) when sending a short message works great.
I'm a converted user... just don't do it while driving.

Except that story is not true. NASA only paid 2.95 a pen and the company started by Paul Fisher paid for all the R&D.

You should try a pair of Shure E2C's.

How the hell am I as an end user supposed to do that? I may know some "UNIX" but I can't interpret source code.
Well you're right. I checked with my source and he was talking about a different aircraft. Sorry for the confusion.
I'm sorry for offending you [obviously a person with first hand knowledge.] I will be more than happy to educate this particular airmen on his errors.
I had no doubt due to his credentials that he was telling the truth but you never know right?

Dammit! I wish my mom would have told me that.
/had to learn the hard way... the really hard way.
However the article also states.
"Editor's note: The APOD text has been modified from its original content. "
This morning the part about the contrail was ommitted.
I like using Xroaches and Xbabies and Xmelt or whatever. Screwing with people in Xwindows is ALOT more fun!!
Look at the crap people are listening to... How would you like to be sued for sharing Christina Aguilera or "Beyonce"? OR LIL' FREAKING BOW WOW!
Personally I'd be embarrassed to be caught with this crap on my hard drive. I try and keep to artists that have talent and sound great live.

Just get bent.... every night.... That's how people in my town pass the time.
I can manage multiple accounts (i.e. I've got more than a few yahoo accounts.... no I'm not a spammer... just paranoid)
Give it a shot... You've got nothing to lose!
