Ground loops are a pain. Thats why you need to have isolation transformers on the input of all devices.

Ever wonder why this type of situation doesn't happen in your home theater? Cause of isolation transformers.

As for the whole reason for this topic, I'd say stick with the individual AC-DC converters. They are quiet, small, put out very little heat, and work with your components. If you try to roll your own, you may learn some stuff, but you will most likely end up with a sub par item.

  6. Re:No!! on Guide to your Perfect Digital Camera · · Score: 1
If you are just starting out, just send your photos away to a large scale lab, they do a decent job and only charge about $3.29 (at clark color labs) a roll including shipping.

A decent roll of film (quality stuff like Kodak gold, not something like Supra or Portra) will run you $1.48 (from clark color labs, in quanitites over 4) each for 24 exposures.

So total is $4.77 per roll for film and processing with reasonable quality. A quality USED camera (no need to buy a new SLR to learn on) will run you about $250 or so.

    Digi SLR = $1000
Used SLR + processing of 157 rolls of film = $998.89

And I'm sure if you were to roll your own film you could save even more money because of bulk purchases.

The prices I gave for comparison are for decent quality. If your income depends upon you shooting good photos, go to a quality film processor. However, as most of the article was concerned, and the previous post, you should already have a sweet SLR if your income depends upon shooting photos.

You bring up an interesting point. The main question is, I guess, what does the license say?

If the game's license (which I have never even seen, not even a click thru like on a computer) says that sale of said item must be accompanied by the media it was on, then it's illegal. Otherwise, as long as you still do not have the ability to use said games that you have sold, it should be perfectly legal.

I'll second Gnumeric for being a quality spreadsheet app. I like it better then OpenOffice as its quicker starting up and the interface easier IMHO.

Linux From Scratch lists depends on its site, as well as build instructions: Gnumeric-1.2.10

It seems to depend on a bit of Gnome-ish things. But having some Gnome stuff isn't a bad idea, and you don't _NEED_ all of Gnome for it to work.

You should really check them out, full blown computers made just for playing games.

But seriously, because of the licencing on windows / directx and such, I think that unless many / all game developers decided to start using (what some may consider lower quality) open source / free drivers, that this isn't going to happen any time soon.
Also, gamespy type 3rd party software wouldn't work, and irc clients for finding games may not be included either...

I think a completely new OS, build from teh ground up for gaming would be needed to be developed, and be very very modular to support all the different hardware with quality graphics and sound. Think shared memory software rendering for every mobo sold in the last 4 years...

    Good idea though...
