  1. Re:Fax Is Old on FCC Opens Flood Gates for Junk Faxes · · Score: 1

    The good news is...

Anyone can setup their own Print to Fax gateway and Fax to Email gateway.

Though my setup just collects the faxes and sorts them based on some rule sets.

Then everyone is free to pick through the fax list on the servers, open the pdf, and then print the fax if need be. All we pay for is a phone line...

WinPrint Hylafax is a beautiful thing. (Though you can also use scripts to create an samba print to fax printer, but then you need to embed all the things you want in the cover page)

A looong time ago in Seatle I managed to get some similar system.

Hertz or herts or something car rental came with a navigation system.

I thought, well this is nifty and set about setting up my destination.

It was a bit of a pain initially and I was really annoyed I didn't have more time to spend truly learning it before I actually went somewhere. Still, I pressed onward with this great technological advancement and started on my way.

I swear the damn thing tried to kill me repeatedly.

Wrong street here, one way there or just it generally shouting at me that I was going the wrong way.

I was still fairly impressed that it managed to re-calculate the route, but I gave up on it after the second time it sent me down the wrong way on a one way street.

It ended up being useful to get me close to my destination, but just wasn't responsive enough for my needs.

I'm sure it is much better now though.

  3. Re:They are good at picking losers on Another Sony Format Bites the Dust · · Score: 1

    I can actually confirm this...

Beta is still quite in use and is almost a prefered format for many distributors.

Digitaly fed network distribution (broadband/satellite downlink) is growing faster then I see other formats. Though I do believe the main distribution method is still of course vanilla satellite distribution (analogue/digital feeds).

Only around a few months ago we finally phased out 3/4 as a viable distribution means. We really only had one distributer sending us PSAs in this format and we asked them to send Betacam instead.

I fully expect digital distribution to take over completely in the next few years for broadcasters. That doesn't mean decks and tape will go away as equipment does fail both on the client and server side of life. When that happens there is still a need to be able to ingest from older formats.

This in theory, wasn't supposed to be as a big of a problem as it is. The good news, DTV receivers handle it quite well and it's only temporary.

I had a similar project in class.

The bonus for the course was if you could crack the system and find a certain file... you won. Meaning, it was an instant A. We were told anything was fair game and we could even change the file if we wanted to fool someone into thinking they had won.

I didn't really need the instant A and let someone else have it. (The prof looked at me and said, but you don't need this... I laughed and told him I wanted to see who else would get in.)

I took a different approach with the contest myself.

I cracked all of the engineering servers, set up a UID 0 account for myself and began patching all the systems. I was only granted the power to administer servers if I could crack them. Once I took one, I changed the MOTD to "Under new management: contact so and so for assistance."

It wasn't that much of a surprise since I made my intentions public to the professor who was managing things. They were out of date because he didn't have time and he admitted that. (numerous security holes). I really created more work for myself in the end, but those systems were important for our work and we didn't need someone with malicious intent there.

After I left school, someone breached them again through probably an sshd exploit. This time the guy wasn't very nice and whacked the servers. (Like I said, we really did need them, but after leaving school I banged my passwords and retired my admin hat)

The JIT model isn't so bad and it would seem some companies are building around that. I had some time to chat with the service tech and he was telling me about the shipping setup various companies have. Dell actually had a facility nearby that warehoused and shipped out parts as needed. (Not anywhere close to a Dell facility, but just a warehouse/shipping rig) It would seem he wasn't just an IBM remote tech, but actually was shared among several companies.
