There goes my dream of flying an F-16. (I was hoping to win the lottery one day to afford the purchase price). Yeah, I'm a sucker for a nice plane and I probably would blow all of my winnings on something silly.

Unfortunately, I have yet to win the lottery, but then again I have yet to purchase a lottery ticket. (The lottery is a tax on those who are bad at math)

Maybe I could setup a paypal account and ask everyone to give me money for my very own F-16. In return, if the slashdot community would help me purchase said assault aircraft I would inturn be highly influenced to target practice over some highly loathesome corporate office. *cough* sco *cough*

First of all, I get the idea this person is not a veteran of the linux industry. He does a good job of navigating through what are essentially basic problems.

I don't think its worthy to mention he had his jumpers wrong... everyone makes a jumper mistake and it is fairly easy to diagnose.

His major fault.... He purchased a Win-TV 250. This card is pretty good actually with onboard hardware mpeg2 encoding. (I own a 250 as well as a vanilla hauppage win-tv) The drawback to the Win-TV 250 is it does not have tv out. He should have spent a couple extra bucks and got the 350.

The next big mistake was relying on some integrated tv out solution. It's been my experience that onboard has the tendency to be slightly different then their off board branded brotherin. Thus, I can easily see why he had some troubles.

He said it himself, he suffers from some impulse buying habbits. I think a little more research on compatability would have turned up better linux results. Personally, I went into the linux pvr project with absolutely no starting knowledge other then getting my hauppage card working a long long time ago. (out of the box support made it no chore). However, knowing nothing about the task prompted me to research, research and well... read more.

I wish he had tried a Knoppix MythTV Live CD as I would like to have seen the results. ie. used knoppix CD and it worked! (probably not with the odd video out)

    Indeed,

This is exactly the same story in my shop. Every application I have to fix and rework doesn't simply go to my personal patch folder. I would much rather have it part of a main branch so the issues gets resolved and hopefully in time it will be better then my fix.

We are actually seeing alot of vendor box's come in that use a great deal of free software and I suspect they perform similar services.

Here, I let management know that if it is under the GPL or similar license we are going to be submitting back fixes and in house scripts. Being we aren't a software shop they enjoy the exposure.

Unfortunately, we are just not profitable enough to really submit funds to organizations. I hope this changes in the future and one day I can tell management these guys really make our lives easy. It's time for a donation to the cause.

For a fact I know there are organizations who exist around Perl,Python,Sendmail (Heavily modified), etc and not one bit goes back. NDA bound not to say too much I'm afraid. However, I've seen massive scalability changes, authentication changes and whatnot. Some great work has been done in house and these companies are huge. Unfortunately, sometimes their work just doesn't conform to what people want back, but other then a patch or two I've never seen anything on the order of funding.

Most of my books in my core degree were always over a 100$. Thankfully, programming classes we were encouraged to use our copies over and over as reference. Live without them if we wanted and a selection of books were recommended from the bookstore (not required to purchase).

The hardware side of things generally re-used the same books. Newer revisions rarely changed the text (revision changes were highlighted by the prof). Of course when it did come to buying these books it did hurt. Finding used was also difficult as they tended to be good reference material even after school.

Now, core classes for general education it is a complete nightmare. Two to three quarter turn over time on most of them. Six months and its obsolete? English? Mathematics? Comon...

The biggest kick in the pants occurred when different books were selected by different professors for the same class. Hence the reason I began buying books a week late. If by chance I decided to change class times, I wouldnt ended up whining at the book store.

A god send, most students seemed to neglect, was our off campus book store. It was a non-profit book store which students used to sell books to each other. Complete volunteer and charity ran by a local church.

The engineering degree was one of the very few who used the practice described above. Every other degree I'm told ran pretty close to general education classes. Despite the hellish prices our book store managed to sink itself and change hands three times.
