I don't know about this "science" stuff, but I thought I would get straight to the root of the issue. To this end, I found a nearby hibernating honey bee and I asked the little fellow what his thoughts were on the matter. At first I couldn't quite make out what he was saying (bee sized and all) so I held him close to my face. Do you know what the little guy told me? Kill everyone, make the rivers flow with their blood and fill the skies with their screams.

Surprisingly, this is exactly what the article said too.

Back in the day I actually picked up a handset at a major retailer and checked to see if anyone had changed the passwords. In my experience, there are lots of poorly configured systems or at least those waiting to be poorly configured. A very basic feature of even the most basic systems is a redirect. You can setup a dialing pool on an unknown extension very quickly and very easily. Once it's running there are very times someone actually goes back to investigate.

  8. Re:I'm glad on House Passes TV Commercial Volume Bill · · Score: 2

There were already regulations which limited volume.

This is measure of relative change which is kinda odd to enforce.

In analogue transmission you wanted to watch over driving the audio level because it can effect power output. There were also decibel levels which were too hot and could cause many issues and even some with the receiving set. In a digital world when you drive past 0 there is no overhead for such levels and most equipment simply limits (rather poorly). In all cases there were limiters in place to ensure nothing was over driven or if at least it was then it not cause any issues beyond quality drop.

With a ceiling of 0 we typically operated at a nominal volume of -10 on tones. This has a fair bit of room in and typically you try to avoid peaking at 0 because this is hot and sounds awful. However, nothing is stopping the next station from operating at -8 or -12 as their nominal operating range. In fact, newer digital equipment also started doing away with 0 as the hard ceiling. Audio is very much relative from station to station.

Now, so we have the basis for how hard ceilings work and the measures generally put in place to solve problems. However, I don't know of too many pieces of audio equipment that can catch audio acceleration issues and adjust. Really, when discussing relative change and not hard limits it is a matter of rate of change more then anything else.

In the near term this means everyone has to start manually reviewing their carts and hopefully watching at least the bars to see how hot a carts audio is. In the long term, those shops that can afford it (which is surprisingly not the majority) will have to purchase some fancy new gear.

I like to think on some level it might provide some understanding between two people. Diplomats can look at it and say, "He is a shit head just like me... Look we are the same."

  20. Toughie on Anxiety and IT? · · Score: 1

This has been a really difficult post to formulate.

I haven't really put much thought into why I don't particularly have a great deal of stress today. (That was not always true) In past places of employment my stresses were due to inexperience and lack of proper support and escalation paths. In those cases I was both the end of a very short escalation path and in lots of scenarios the technology was very new. I also wasn't compensated very well for the troubles until I decided that I should probably find someone who was willing to pay me better for my troubles.

The stress then was the product of the environment and it wasn't a very good position for the company to be in as well. I did grow from the experience, but there was far too much risk for the savings achieved. I've since then moved onto a few companies who generally have their act together. I've made it a point to ask about their escalation and support practices from vendors and integrators. My past experiences generate a bit of a paranoia today and I believe some may refer to that as wisdom. (I call it emotional scarring ;) )

That is really only part of the story when you really think about it. There are many avenues for stress to invade our lives. As some pointed out there could be ridiculous deadlines involved or in other cases poor time management skills. Life is not always about how others punish us, but how we cause distress upon ourselves with our own practices.

In every way, it is important to identify what is causing the anxiety and determine if it can be fixed. If your group or company wants to operate in a fashion that is dangerous for its profits or reputation then it is up to management to decide to stay or sway from the path. In all cases, you can vote with your feet and even if it takes time to change positions there is generally always an out.

At least at my current place of employment we state clearly that people will make mistakes. It's part of the way we operate because we are just too damned last minute. Directors do not like to hear such things, but if they would like to curb issues they could force better planning practices. (Which we kinda did to an extreme sadly... careful what you wish for).

This and many more things contribute to me operating relatively stress free. I have however built up a good chunk of skills and experience which let me operate with as little stress as possible. Mostly today I'm annoyed at the evening calls that happen outside of my oncall period and that is more of an an anger issue.
