and while Windows 2000 is better it is still not as stable.

There is a lot that cmd.exe doesn't do, to even suggest it has the power of a unix shell is absurd. grep, awk, sed, etc

and alt-tab sucks, pasting between windows sucks, listen I am a windows user(some would say an expert). Not saying everyone should use linux, mac, or windows they all have problems and advantages. I am saying that Linux has things to learn from MS. And vice versa.

I am not a mandrake user do not even run linux, I just don't to have to go out and find standard utilities(on most unix boxes) when I want to ssh, etc.

why do you think MS put those games on Windows 3.1 in the first place?

To get users familiar using a mouse and pointing and clicking.

The quickest way to get most users comfortable on a machine(OS), is let them play some simple yet fun games. Card games are a perfect choice.

MS OS have problems because of stability, crappy command line, crappy windows system(unless u only run 1 maybe 2 programs at a time), lack of utilities installed, etc.

But in terms of being user friendly, ease of installing programs, and relative ease of installing hardware, there is a lot to learn from them.

I hear people always say how insecure Windows is and how they would never ever hook a windows machine directly to the Internet.

I am probably wrong here but I would think a Win98 machine would be much more secure than a *ix box, as long as file sharing is turned off. The Windows box doesn't serve anything up(no telnet, web server, e-mail, etc) what do you attack without filesharing and no services?

I ran a win98 box(without file sharing) for a couple of years directly off my cable modem never had a problem(was I stupid and lucky) or is it fairly secure?

Please note I am not even coming close to saying MS servers products are secure rather their win98 or win95 product is secure from attacks over the internet as long as file sharing is turned off.

Have you thought about finding a high school teacher to tutor you? Meet once a week and pay him/her x amount of dollars per week. Ask any of the high schoolers, they know who the good ones are. I would think most hs teachers would be happy to do it. They would probably have some older books they would give to you or sell cheap. This would give you more flexibility than a college class. Of cource you wouldn't get credit.

Also, if you don't care about credit, just show up at a local college class. Buy the book, sit in on lectures, take the test(don't hand it in). Many profs wouldn't mind.

When the vcr first came on the scene, the movie industry freaked, who would go see movies if you watch it for free? They figured people would stop going to movies. They were wrong.

I don't think a dog's feedback would be better if I was interested in programming a robot.

I absolutely agree that a real dog/cat/komodo dragon would make a better pet than an AIBO, just watch your fingers around that lizard.

But I still feel you miss the point on why people are buying these things and why a SDK is exciting some people. It is because they can program a robot, doesn't matter what it looks like. Sony made it look like a dog because it will sell better that way and people can relate to it better.

BTW, I own a border collie(with bones, fur, and lots of enegry) and have no intention of purchasing a AIBO.
