  1. Re:Still awaiting an Intel iBook or similar on Apple Begins Fixing MacBook Pro Issues · · Score: 1

Apple is tempting you! If you want to run OS X (legally) then you have to use their hardware.

When the Intel iBook (MacBook?) will come it most likely will be a Core Solo laptop to differenciate between the consumer and prosumer lines and to lower the cost of the iBook.

Do you really need a Core Duo laptop ??? What can you do with a Core Duo that you can't do with a Core Solo? What do you need FW800 for? Do you need really fast access to huge amounts of data? How often have you been in a place recently that had a modem port BUT didn't have wireless access points or ethernet? If you weren't at a hotel then most likely you didn't have access to either a modem or ethernet port (without permission).

Do you have a cell phone? Do you know that you can access the Internet through your cellphone from your laptop (through USB or bluetooth) without breaking your contract (search Google for QNC [quick network connect]). Granted QNC only gives you 14.4kb/s while using your minutes (no extra fees), but who really needs really fast access in the middle of nowhere? If you really need it then get a data plan from your cellphone provider. Here (Ontario, Canada) I can get a PCMCIA EVDO card that gives me up to 500MB transfer per month for $100 CDN.

Yes it would be nice to have a higher cap on the data plan (1.5GB to 2.0GB per month), but who really needs that much right now that doesn't have access to ethernet or a wireless connection.

If you need a fast graphics card, a core duo laptop with OS X, then get the MacBook Pro. If not then wait for and get one of the upcoming Intel iBooks. If you're not able to spend $1000 USD on a laptop (current cost of entry-level iBook) then get a heavy, loud, short battery life Windows XP laptop and please stop complaining. For the last couple of years (2-3 probably) Apple laptops have been feature competetive and are (with introduction of Intel chips) starting to be CPU competetive as well. There hasn't been such thing as a "Mac Tax" since the late '90s when Macs started being priced comparitively to mid-high-end PCs (which have things that cheap PCs don't - FW400, USB2.0, 802.11g, GB ethernet, dedicated video cards, SATA, DVI, etc.)

  2. Give me the choice! on Theaters Unhappy About Faster DVD Releases · · Score: 1

I am the consumer and (in this case as well as most where people claim they know what's best for their consumers) I know that I'd rather have the choice of whether I want to watch the DVD in my living room or go to a movie theatre.

The best solution for this would be to have the movie start in the theatre and have a 2 week delay for releasing a higher priced DVD (for e.g. $30 instead of $20). Then after the movie is done playing in theatres (4-6 months) the DVD should fall to the regular $20 price.

This way you're giving those who want the DVD the chance to get it earlier and those who'd rather pay less can wait the 4-6 months for the regular price or a year or 2 for the discounted price.

The drivers that need to be (and most if not all will be) found are:
    - ATI Radeon X1600 PCI Express video driver
    - Ethernet 10/100/1000BASE-T (Gigabit) driver
    - Airport Extreme driver
    - Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR driver
    - iSight driver
    - IR receiver driver
and possibly 4 other drivers (Bus controller, Chipset, etc.)

I don't know if sound works or not (sound devices aren't expanded in the image). I'm guessing that Firewire and USB 2.0 don't need drivers (Windows XP SP2 supports them out of the box usually)

And then the drivers will have to be found for similar devices on the other Intel Macs (MacBook Pro, Mac Mini)

Another cool feature would be creating a mobile version of Google Maps for cell phones (there are 2 or 3 that exist, but they aren't that great - especially when they shrink the computer version of Google Maps to the size of a cell phone screen).

Convincing the cell network providers to give us accurate GPS info of our location from our phones (E911 gives that to the emergency services right now in most places in Canada and the US) for a fee would also be a great idea.

Solution 1 - It has a PCMCIA slot - try borrowing/buying a PCMCIA ethernet adapter (they're as cheap as $15 with ship on ebay

BTW. I absolutely hate commercials. - There's a scene in one of the early Futurama episodes where Fry has a commercial implanted into one of his dreams and the other crew members ask him how prevalent commercials were back in the 20th century. He answers by listing all the ways except in dreams. Other than dreams, there are still places that commercials aren't: underwater and space. If they (corporations) try to get space "banners" that cover up our view of stars, they'll see backlash and possibly the first case of space vandalism.

And now since Macs will be running on 97% same hardware, we can see that Apple products aren't over-priced (they used to be way back).

Here's how to counter the Macs are overpriced argument:

    1) If costs wasn't an issue would you want a Mac?
    - if no, then go buy a PC and stop complaining about things that you don't care about.
    - if yes, then you want something that Macs have (OS X, great design, better battery life for normal sized laptops, features [USB 2.0, Firewire, DVD+_RW, 802.11G], whatever.)
    2) Go to a computer company website and spec out a similar computer (make sure that you take into account all the features - comparing a Mac to a $300 Walmart PC is not a proper comparison).
    3) The Mac will come out either even or lower in price + you get OS X on it.
    4) If they're still complaining about being able to build their own computer for half the price of Dell, IBM, etc., then they:
    - Don't value their time enough.
    - Don't care about warranty, customer service, proper reinstallation CDs/DVDs (Windows laptop restore CDs are crap because of the spyware/nagware they reinstall and they don't allow you to backup your documents before reinstall).
    - Don't care about how the computer looks (cheap cases look like crap - same goes for cheap LCDs).

I'm not saying that Macs are for everyone. They're not. But if most people actually researched their computer purchase, there'd be a lot more Macs on the net.
