I've already emailed it to the coders from PI and XFree Bugs.

But yeah, it's nice to know i'm not alone :)

it's a problem using plain old twm as well, but for some reason the effect is lessened if you use 8 bpp depth. I recompiled the r128 driver with debugging support enabled if anyone wants a look-see.

    Tis most weird.

    Oh BTW.

    Kernel 2.2.13, XF86 4.0, twm.

I too have compiled XF4 at home, but I have a problem with it...and it's a rather strange problem..

I can start the X server and do most things alright in it ( some pixels here and there don't quite work right, specially in XMMS but hey, it's okay, XFree4 is still beta right? )

But if I switch to a VT and then back, the X desktop is totally messed up, we're talking virtually unrecognizable, the colours are all wrong.

It sounds like ( to me ) that whatever buffer it writes the screen to when switching isn't quite saving all the information, or is writing back to the screen wrong.

Yes I have looked at the code, unfortunatly I'm not a Master C Programmer ( yet ) so it doesn't all make sense to me.

My advice, if you have a Rage 128, ( or at least an AGP Xpert 2000 with 32 megs of ram ), you're probably better of with XFree86 3.3.6.

Then again it could just be my motherboard but somehow I doubt it.

    Any ideas?

    But rather:

fools rush in where angels fear to tread

    and

Fools rush in where wise men never go

Of course the canonical reply is:

Since wise man never go there, and it's where angels never tread, how do they know if what's there is worthwhile?

I, for one, hope that Slashdot NEVER becomes mainstream, once you've become mainstream you've lost what you are. The "tirade" by CmdrTaco shows that he his HUMAN, and this site is a result of that humanity. One of the problems with the world today is the increasing lack of empathy by corperations, et al. This, I believe, is due to the fact that we view most companies as faceless, unfeeling beings, and since that's how we view them, they start to view themselfs that way. So if it takes Rob going off half-cocked now and again to keep /. HUMAN, then I say so be it. The minute slashdot becomes cold and clinical ( ie CNN ) is the day I stop coming here.

Ah, but there is one thing you fail to hit on. Companies will do just about ANYTHING to attract business. Even if it means, ugh, cooperation. Even better, have a centeral authority that utilizes something akin to a PGP public key. You have a secret key with the credit card company. E-commerce site emails credit card company with the PGP key you provided them, credit card company emails you ( using your public key ) you email them back using a code ( provided in the encrypted email ) and viola, even better, provide a service that does this automagically. Companies pay you to be part of it. What's in it for the companies? Well hell, what's in the internet for most companies? It costs lots of money for a successful business on the internet. But convience attracts customers and customers spend money. If it's easier on the customers, rest assured you'll see more profits. That DVD site almost certainly lost a customer, and that is NOT very good for profits is it?

I'm actually rather surprised that more people have not boycotted UF and UFMedia for it's recent commoditization of its audience

Audiences can not be commodized, product can. Get your words straight. I sure hope you're not a writer.

In a recent conversation, someone said, "The biggest problem with User Friendly is the UFies."

Hrm...people make the same argument about Linux, and yet it's a statement full of sound and fury, but signifing nothing. Get over it. IMNSHO The biggest problem with Windows98 is the [L]users.

User Friendly is not good art, it's not good writing, and people need to give up their infatuation for a production that is *beyond* formulaic.

First of all, since when has CARTOONS been considered art? It's COMEDY, by definition it's going to be formulaic, get over it. If you're looking for high-brow technical humor read some April 1st RFCs or something.

The first person that compares Dust Puppy to Opus from Bloom County gets a sticker.

And this would prove what? You might has well have said "The first person that compares Tux to MS Bob gets a sticker"

User Friendly is also mighty derivative, I'll tell you what. User Friendly spoofs spoofs, and dammit, that just ain't funny.

Jezus...what did they do to you to rip your sense of humour out so completely?

So, I say these things - Why am I posting as Anonymous Coward? Because if I logged in with my real account, there would be a goddamned UFie Jihad on me and the place I work.

It won't really change things except in the political landscape. Ever notice all the "Made in China" items that you can buy at your local store? Well if we didn't have trade how did we get them? The fact is that every year we decide wither or not to trade with China for the duration of that year, and that decicion can be revoked at any time. The whole "embargo" is simply a political bargining tool. Now if we take this threat away will China be more apt to give Taiwan it's freedom? Probably not, but it is a good showing, and will probably play well in the international scene. Myself, I belive when we place a trade embargo on someone we should cut off ALL trade until they show some good faith ( which China HAS NOT DONE ).

But that is a very intresting idea aclaudet, I wouldn't doubt if it had some kernel of truth to it :)
