thank god, now i'll have something to use with my xbox 360!!

  2. thank you on Integrated Circuit Inventor Jack Kilby Dead at 81 · · Score: 2, Insightful

i've read a couple of posts saying if kilby didn't invent the IC then someone else would have. maybe, however, he gets the credit (like newton and calculus without a formal proof). thank you jack kilby and i hope his family is doing well. you gave us a new way to view the world and if history is fair, you will be part of the academic and historical legacy for many, probally hundreds of years to come

maybe this was a useful quote last year, but keep you peripherals and get a mini. sell your tower to a high school kid and then tell me why your still complaining about the cost. i understand the need to stay with windows due to applications, or other special needs, but cost is no longer part of the argument

And that is not true for Linux/KDE or Linux/GNOME? and there is the problem. windows is windows, you mention two different desktops. i understand your POV, however, remember the average user - more than one choice/look/feel is confusing.

  5. awesome on Review: Halo 2 And The MagicBox XFPS · · Score: 1

i know i'm going to lose karma but halo2 in multiplayer online is everything a pc game has only on a console. correct me if wrong because the last pc fps i played was the first unreal, but halo2 online has everything it had and more. also, whether corporate or not, the user base is huge!! you can find any game type at any time and there will always be people to play. i understand it doesn't have the graphics or physics of half live 2 but for a console (i'm a mac guy) it has everything i wanted in this genre

  6. banned vs proof of age on DC Could Ban 'Mature' Video Game Sales to Minors · · Score: 1

people do understand the difference between banning a game/music/art etc and restricting it. why is bad that its a little harder for a 12 year old to get the game?? i understand it will still happen but for the parents who wish to stay informed and involved at least they have a little help at the store

  7. need focus on Making the 'Best' Desktop Linux System · · Score: 4, Insightful

i have been using different variations of redhat for almost 5 years (6.2 - fedora 2). i'm impressed by the advances but none have come close to what i consider desktop ready. the average user doesn't want to think. they want to play their mp3's (not supported in fedora 2?), they want to edit office documents at home (open office is close, but not there and why should they need to know the different programs like abiword and gnumeric?) linux will be desktop ready when people stop supporting their favorite distro and begin to support common software. take the lesson from apple - the less a user thinks or needs to know the happier they are. before you release software do a user test with your grandmother, if she can sit at the machine and browse the web, play music, send email, and use office apps without ever needing to think, linux is ready. until then i'll keep my iBook, i like getting stuff done, not worrying about dependencies, libraries, or if my laptop will see my windows machine

  8. Re:Typical Mac user has changed over the years on Are Mac Users Smarter than PC Users? · · Score: 1

i started out using computers on, what is now an ancient mac (System 7.) i remembered it freezing up, crashing - just not working. i did everything i could to persuade my parents to by a pc. they did and it was more reliable then the mac (win 95c). i used a pc through college (learned a little linux), began reading slashdot learned their was an alternative to windows and microsoft bashing is fun. Four months ago i bought an ibook (for a lot less then the comparable dell, gateway, sony, etc notebook). It just works. what's the point? in response to the parent they typical mac user (no matter how knowledable) wants to get work done, not worry about a bsod, not spending a full week trying to configure anything in linux. I know this was going to turn into a flame war, that's my part. I'm not a mac zealot, i just like getting stuff done and os x + a two button mouse with a scrolly wheel is the most productive i've ever been!

  9. Keep the end user in mind!! on Time to Try a Linux Desktop? · · Score: 1

this has been a discussion on slashdot for years. the thing i've noticed is the same points are told over and over again. Currently, i'm running a win98 box, a newly installed fedora 2 box, and i'm typing on an ibook. I have been really impressed by the new fedora distro but it still isn't as brainless as a mac. if linux wants to win the desktop war it needs to appeal to the everyday computer user. no terminal, few options, and most importantly it just works. normally the posts on slashdot like to bash microsoft for stealing from apple. if linux is to advance in the desktop war is should start stealing from apple. I guess we'll see what happens now that apple has released Rendezvous open source.

  11. best physics joke on So You Think Physics is Funny? · · Score: 1

this one was told to me by my thermo professor:

A farmer is having trouble with his cows so he hires a geologist, biologist, chemist, and physicist to help.

The geologist surveys the land, the bedrock, and the streams on the farm and declares the cows' trouble are due to the soil and water.

The biologist examines the cow throughly and decides the cause of the problem is a strange virus in the cow.

The chemist, upon the biologist's findings creates a remedy for the virus based on a medicine noone will be able to pronounce.

Finally, the physicist sits the farmer down in front of a chalkboard, draws a circle, and says "consider a spherical cow." :-)

math - you're probally not going to get $150,000 per song out of a 12 year old social studies/ethics - history has shown as soon as the music industry has embraced new technologies, sales went up. ie fm radio, tapes, etc english - effective communication is crucial. suing high school and college students doesn't effectively communicate "we want your business" science - do an experiment or two in how file sharing might work. kudos to apple! business - NEVER update your business model, running to your laywers is always more effective! and always remember - anything new is scary and bad.

  14. society's values on Violent Video Game Restriction Struck Down · · Score: 1

i am proponent of free speech. i believe all speech, including video games should be made available to adults. however, i also believe that as a society, we have a responsibility to protect all young people. i have nothing against r rated movies, or cd's with a parental advisory, and i also have nothing against telling a 13 year s/he has to wait five years before being able to purchase vice city. OR if mom and dad want little jonny to play m rated games, let them buy them for him, but in the world we live in, when jonny's mom and dad both work, maybe two jobs, why can't we tell him to wait till his folks decide? this isn't about taking the games off the market, its about who can EASILY get their hands on them, just like movies, cd's, guns, porn, etc
