but what is the deal with you OS X fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Centris with 68MB RAM, a 25MHz 68040 and 4GB drive for about 2 months now while it attempts to copy a 17 Meg file from one folder on the hard drive to another folder. 2 months. At home, on my C64 w/ 64k of RAM running Contiki, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this lickable OS, the same operation would take about 3 days, if that.
In addition, during this file transfer, Safari will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even Textedit is straining to keep up as I type this.
I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various OS X machines, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a OS X machine that has run faster than its Contiki counterpart, despite the thousands of lines of code stolen from Windows Longhorn. My Tandy 102 with 32k of ram and MS BASIC runs faster than this 25 mhz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that OS X is a superior OS.
OS X addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use OS X over other faster, cheaper, more stable OSes.
release songs under the CC, when they couldn't even release their last album without a bunch of DRM?
Plus, they're listing theirs under the 'Noncommercial Sampling Plus: Songs under this license allow noncommerical sharing and noncommercial sampling' which is fine and good for them; I'd be curious to know how many songs they've 'bitten' over the years that never got attributed.
Paul's Boutique was an excellent example of how sampling should work, and how completely new works can be made from old - that was a fantastic record.
Then we've got P. Duddy to show how old works can be ruined by 'sampling' *entire songs*. Ugh.
It IS great to see that there is some attempt at a revamp of copyright, and this CD will only increase the exposure of CC. At least until the songs get on P2P and are all mixed up with ones that are not legal to share...
Should I be disgusted that some geeks were scared to take something apart because "they might break it", or should I be filled with pride that they used a multi-million dollar piece of equipment rather than a screwdriver to look at the internals?
I don't know. I guess I'll ask the guys who are giving my car a colonoscopy to look at the sparkplugs.
Here's the source I got it from. I am unsure why the article's writer chose to give some figures in rubles, and some in us dollars.
I just found this in the article: In a country where the average monthly salary is about $240...
Color me dumb for missing it, but I know when I was making between 240 and 570 bucks a month, the last thing on my mind was buying anything other than food. And beer.
All the more reason why 15 dollars for a CD ain't gonna fly.
but a quick Google for average Russian wage provided : The average monthly wage in 2003 was 5,512 roubles
(which amounts to 160 euros at the current exchange rate
and about 450 euros when adjusted for purchasing power).
Converted into US bucks - that's roughly 570 dollars a month.
You can't tell me that any attempt by copyright holders is going to 'Stamp out Piracy' with 15 dollar CDs - unless they match the 3.50 'Nice Price'.
Isn't there one person out of all the copyright holders who can wrap their head around that?
I rate this article 4 1/2 'duhs', and rate the clueless morans printing up 'For great justice, make your time Pirate!' posters a +5 Ner.

In the mid-80s I was 15. My pal with the rich dad and the hot new XT told me about BBSs; "Your computer connects to someone else's and you can get games and chat and do stuff!"
I proceeded to beg two Multitech acoustic coupler modems off my high school computer lab teacher, and lost a weekend to splicing a cable out of old solid phone wires and masking tape to hold the beast together. Strangely, Multitech was very patient with my youthful exuberance, and slowly read off the pins and where to connect them on my Apple IIgs.
The next few weeks were amazing. Proterm, a pal and I made our first call with a number gleaned from a cracked version of Hard Hat Mack. We logged in as 'new', frantically wrote down our name and password in a notebook that soon would be filled, and sat in wonder as words and animated \|/-\ cursors flew across our screen as fast as we could read.
Page after page of the notebook was filled with phone numbers, names and passwords, floppy after floppy were filled with blue box plans, docs for cracked games, directions on how to get revenge on geek-hating bullies and ASCII pinups.
Of course, whenever we saw a 'Contact Sysop' menu item, we frantically entered the '*', and was brought to the 'Enter your reason for chatting with the Sysop' page.
The chat textbox invariably looked like this:
WE KNOW YOU ARE THERE
WE KNOW YOU ARE WATCHING!!!
WHY DON'T YOU TALK TO US?!
WE KNOW YOUARE THERE!!!
The carefree BBS days came to an abrupt halt when the monthly phone bill arrived, and totaled over five hundred dollars. I was brought up on charges in front of Mom and Dad, and spent two weeks in a Juvenile Correctional Facility otherwise known as my room. My calls were thereafter contained to the Twin Cities, and there were far fewer in number as I was busy with chores designed to build character and break my spirit.
After this, my travels on the high seas and the vast treasures I accumulated! AYE! ARR!
I want the Republicans to call the Democrats on over-spending, higher taxes, and big government. And I want the Democrats to remind the Republicans that we have civil liberties and that you can't rely on amoral institutions like corporations to always do the right thing.
I'm pretty sure that the present Republicans are responsible for the most over-spending and big government we've ever seen, and I know my taxes have gone up.
I keep wondering when the people who identify with Republicans are going to wake up and say, "WTF? When did I become a Democrat?"
If the seed is hosted on the site, sure. If it's not, it's no different than linking. What, you work for the BBC?
Whether or not the sites are up or down, please recognize the difference between linking to copyrighted content and hosting it. Plus, your assertion that 'they got shut down' is just a guess, and a poor one at that.
Many of the sites that were put up when Bittorrent was 'hot and new' were hobby sites. There are plenty of trackers from days of yore out there that are not maintained, or got taken down for many other reasons: cost, space, school accounts, ect. A Google search is all that is necessary to show that. I'm sure you can point to several that were 'shut down', and I can point to a pile that are still up and running.
Is linking to copyrighted content infringement? No. Is downloading it without the permission of the copyright holder infringement? Yes.
The morality of the decision is left as an exercise for the reader.
1. Terrorist attack on US soil - Oklahoma City style/size, pre-elections.
2. Vote Fraud that makes Florida look like a day in kindergarden.
3. Riots immediately following the election results because...
4. Bush wins (due to 1 and 2).

I think it's pretty sad that freedom, justice, honesty, and hope have taken a more-or-less permanent vacation from this country. I didn't even want to post this, because of stupid fear of reprisal. But, what the hell. I hear the weather is nice in Gitmo.
I hope I'm wrong on all counts, but even a tree knows which way the wind blows.
It's been shown that most/.ers read/. with IE on Windows (presumably at work).
Even though I *am* here on OS X, methinks you don't know what 'monopoly' means. It doesn't mean that there aren't any other choices, it means that MS leverages their market share in their OS to stifle competition in other areas.
Go back a few years, and read about the original browser war. That is a good example. Or see what MS did to BeOS's OEM program.
I have a 4 way Xeon server that I've been thinking about turning into a laptop.
I've got it built into a custom plywood case with a 19" LCD, 4 drive RAID, tape backup and 100 disc CDR changer. I'm working on installing the 3 day battery backup and generator this week.
Now, could someone come help me? My legs are pinnned and crushed and I can't reach the remote.
When I see something outrageous on the Daily Show, I look it up to see the truth of it, and end up learning more details than a regular news show would provide.
The issues are there in either type of show; the difference is that I research the DS stories afterwards more often. (probably because they pick the most insane real life stuff to begin with, and the stories that *don't* make it to other media outlets.)
People who watch other 'news' shows take for granted that the story, as presented, is all there is to it. (In my experience)
Much like the Patriot Act is anything but what its name alludes to - there is always more to the story.
Thanks Borg-like telecommunications conglomerations!
I have heard your plea and have a surprise for you this Christmas!
An S-Video to RCA adapter!
You really shouldn't have masturbated in the company bathroom on June 5th, 2:37 pm.
With Love,
Santa Claus
P.S. The tinfoil underwear doesn't work.
Strangely, it took roughly a week. The second test was a simulation of the moderation results of this post.
It received a +5 Funny, which puzzled researchers, as it is currently modded -1 Offtopic.
Damn you Schroedinger!

Why draw attention to your disinformation campaign?

No wonder you posted anon - you show a lack of knowledge of how bittorrent works and what constitutes distribution. Read up, then post.

Arguing on Slashdot has certainly helped me deal with the developmently challenged people that email me saying, "I can't get my email to work".

Bill O'Riley is a tool. Of the right, btw.
If you're a good parent, you don't need this stuff.
Someone should send social services over to Timothy's house to see how many lost infants he's got in his garage.
sheesh. It might be neat on dogs, it's just dehumanizing on people.
