Couldn't a windows user put a full screen VPC session on one monitor, assign a keyboard and mouse to it, and continue working with the host on the other monitor? Shared Folders would allow simultaneous use of the C: drive (or shared networking).
Haven't tried it, but sounds like its worth a try for the windows side...
Here in Minnesota, we like hot laptops. If your G4 Powerbook is bothering you in your not-so-frosty climes, please send it to me.
You will have done a good deed, and have the satifaction that some Minnesota girl is removing some of her clothing while using your old hardware. After me, that is.
It pains me to point out the tongue in cheek nature of my post, but you did notice I never used an *acceptable* term for women?
Its posts like these that really make me think that/.ers *are* socially inept. The mods who used funny got it. The mods who used insightful sort of got it. The mods who used overrated and flamebait just lost the partition with 'Virtual Girl' on it I guess.
The author has a link a the top of the article that leads to a bio and a picture. I know why everyone assumed the author was male. Because they didn't click the link to see wtf it/his/her qualifications were. Because the written word is law as it stands. Because a t-shirt should be made, "Slashdotters do it half-assed."
So it seems that the people who didn't read the story are rewarded, and I have to deal with half-wits. eh.
I should think you'll be on the waiting list, and use the developer interface to alert you when you are about to post a link that was in the story. "Whew! That was close! Thank goodness for my glowing cyber-ball alerting me to potential ridicule!"
I had it tuned to channel "Does U.S policy piss off the world?" and it broke.
It does look like a fun toy, but not for two bills. For that amount, it should come with a cyber wiener that glows when chicks that are into linux are near.
I thinks it has to do more with the potential that openBeos and YellowTab show than what you can do right now, sadly. Beos is in need of more developers. Ironically, the lack of attention Beos has recieved has preserved its consistent interface.
I cringe at the idea of hundreds of linux 'velopers designing 'new and improved' interfaces for Beos, while I lust after new drivers and apps for my fav OS.
Beos was dealt a crappy hand, and was an excellent example of how MS could use monopoly power to kill a competing oses. 'Course it didn't help that they changed 'focus' to an embedded os (BEIA), when the desktop was what they were good at.
Hopefully, openBeos (read my Journal to find out the new name...?) will remain/become primarilly a 'media' os, and have an Apple-esque 'GUI guideline' that won't be disregarded.
People, a skirt wrote this article! I mean c'mon - I see all these quotes, "What did 'he' mean? What settings was 'he' using?" etc.
Eugenia is a chick, fer chissakes. I guess dolls can use linux, but by they way you sexist/.ers are talking, you'd think a babe could never get the hang of it.
Sorry, I wasn't very clear. The Q10 only works with 95? 98/2000 and XP, Mac os 9 (Beta), soon OS X. I'm sure the q10 etc. software and drivers could be ported to linux, as they were working on Beos drivers a couple of years ago.
I plan on begging for the Beos source, so the q10 can be supported by the Beos community.
It couldn't hurt to ask, as they have consistently given me beta drivers when requested.
They are quick to respond to emails, but like to have their software fleshed out before general release. (Read: good updates, but sometimes lengthy periods between updates..)
The problem with the original Audigy was its misleading claim of 24 bit recording and playback. It *seems* that the abillity is now there, but hard to get. Defaults sound like upsampling is still being used. Of course, I like the sound quality of talking out of my ass...
and I, after a long courtship, will finally be joined in holy matrimony.
Our children will just seem to pop up out of nowhere, and will all be very friendly and knowledgable. They will even keep track of the places you go, and the things you like.
Heh, I recall the heat now...god it was bad, Bloomington and St. Paul had no A/C; twas a bitch, that summer heat. The Fridley store had A/C that I sorely missed when filling in at St. Paul and running the Bloomington store...
The bowling team must have been great - did you know Anthony and Fred C?
I used to run the Fridley store, then the Bloomington store. Many of the hilarious signs were made by me. (and many of the not funny ones too.) I still have a few good ones made by other employees...
Alas, the Bloomington store is no more - I went there recently and there was just a hole in the ground. I guess my evil Teddy Ruxpin automaton finally took over the store, drilled a hole in space-time and destroyed it.
You can see some of my (admittedly crummy:) handiwork at the St. Paul or Fridley store - just look for the display with the dozen car speakers attached to a metal screen.
The nice thing about Ax-man surplus is that you can find other things there too; marbles, wooden blocks, plastic bits, nuts and bolts, baby doll heads, stepper motors, flat files, chrome trash cans, prom dresses, tons of laboratory glassware, aluminum stock, rollerblade wheels, nylon washers and blocks, remote control car starters, 500 gallon tanks, and really nice employees who are always full of suggestions for your project/halloween costume/plans for world domination.
I worked there for 2 plus years, and have yet to have a job that challenged my brain and body like Ax-man. It's like a museum where the gift shop is all around you. If you are in the cities, it's a must see! Say hi to David and Bill:)
I make no excuses; I own a Apple IIGS, and an old Powerbook. Just what do these people expect?
The machines are unsupported, out of warranty, and are completely obsoleted by Apple. Yes, they have system software downloads for the IIGS, and for the Mac, but those stop at sys 7.5x (Mac.)
I own these machines, and will do whatever I want with them. If it takes downloading a.2mg file for the GS emulator on my mac, if I need to make a disk image of my mac HD, If I have to scour the net for a control panel that was EOLed and is not able to be purchased, I will in a heartbeat.
Screw these people who are 'defending' the copyright of 'Beneath Apple Manor', Cannonball Blitz, and whatever else runs on the IIGS. Show me where I can buy these, online or otherwise.
The copyright problem here is that software will outlast the machines they run on. 20 years from now, when the motherboard of the IIGS goes bad, all the software, and info that was created/stored on this machine can be used in an emulator.
I really don't care about the 'rights' of copyright holders in this context, it all comes down to what I need/want to do on these machines.
Some authors are still active, and are awake to the situation. They realize there is no point to holding on to their releases, and submit them as freeware. That's great. Even Shareware serves this purpose.
Cinemaware is a good example of this. They are rereleasing Defender of the Crown on new platforms (GBA/phones) *AND* making the old disk images available for download! Why not? Is someone going to walk into Software, ETC. and ask for the black and white Macintosh version anytime soon? I think not.
All best are off when the copyright holder is not available, or just sitting on this stuff. I will have it one way or another. Abandonware is illegal because copyright is (becoming) eternal. Frankly, I don't care.
I cut my 'pirate' tooth on a Apple IIe, (do legal copies of any Apple II game even exist?) and will continue to use and promote the Apple II software.
Abandonware should be legal. Out of print, EoL software should be legal. If I can't buy it new and supported from a store or online, it should be fair game.
When copyright is extended to absurd lengths, it only weakens the idea of copyright on new things.
Lots of people feel that Abandonware is fine and dandy to copy and distribute. Some even feel it's ok to charge for it. That's where I draw my line in the sand. If the copyright holders want to charge for it - Great! It's not Abandonware. If some guy wants to sell you a $4 floppy with Hard Hat Mack and Diamond Mine on it, no way. Don't sell this stuff.
Copyright lasts too long. Public Domain is already on it's way out. Abandonware is illegal. I will continue to break the law until the law is changed. Many people feel similarly, (50,000,000 Fans of Elvis using Kazaa Can't Be Wrong) and the copyright laws need to reflect this. Laws should reflect society and not lobbying.
I have just finished applying for the patent on *searching* Google. I believe my solution to 'searching a database of links for answers to particular questions' is irrefutable, completely new, and strangely compelling. You may send your licensing checks to:
Is a perfect example of this. That show turns my stomach - what ever happened to musicians? They used to have bands on Star Search (I used to work with the keyboard player of Limited Warranty, we all gave him endless crap:) - there is nothing like that now. It's all pre-fab 'take a boobie girl or winsome lad, add 'hit' producer, sprinkle with lip syching, Protools, and liberal amount of Auto-Tune, add a dash of faceless backup band^W tracks and bake at 350 plays a day'. Ugh.
Haven't tried it, but sounds like its worth a try for the windows side...
You will have done a good deed, and have the satifaction that some Minnesota girl is removing some of her clothing while using your old hardware. After me, that is.
Cellphone makers take note.
Is there a good search engine I could check to see what this 'Google' is?

Another day on /. :P
I couldn't help it.. :)

Hotcakes, I tell ya!

Wait. That's me.
Hmmm..Gotta find the bathroom here in BOB's 'house'...hmm...where...not it..this? grrr.....damnit!!!
I now see why BOB failed.
Eugenia is a chick, fer chissakes. I guess dolls can use linux, but by they way you sexist /.ers are talking, you'd think a babe could never get the hang of it.
Have some sensitivity for the weaker sex already.

The Mbox from Digidesign is pretty nice too, altho Win/mac only. All do 24/96 without breaking a sweat.
The problem with the original Audigy was its misleading claim of 24 bit recording and playback. It *seems* that the abillity is now there, but hard to get. Defaults sound like upsampling is still being used. Of course, I like the sound quality of talking out of my ass...
These three do pretty well terrorising the US.
If you're a Republican, hit Alt-F4 to reply.

Ah, love.

Great work with the cheap paneling covering all the holes in the plaster too.
Bastard.
Geez, write a personal or something...

My name is Steve Jobs, and I am a pirate.
The goggles do nothing!
That's all he needs; a bunch of Mac SEs and CIs running around underfoot.
