The big question is "Why would M$ do anything to support Linux?" The answer is that it allows them to sell wmf as a cross platform format. This is probably a hurdle that they need to overcome to con the content world (or legislators) into embracing their evil plan. Don't worry they can alway screw the Linux community over in the future when their goals have been met.
I've filed for a patent on using a software monopoly to force hardware vendors to implement a hardware based authenication scheme, in order to prevent free open source software from running on on said hardware without my permission.
Thus if M$ tries to use Palladium to screw Linux, i've got them by the balls.
Very nice! I was serious about diablo being a commercial nethack, except for the realtime running clock and graphics it is functionally an almost identical game.
Redundancy == instant backup. My home server setup has a partition for home directories and important data. This partition is mirrored on another drive. This means I don't have to worry too much about backing up the system and a regular basis.
Before you call me a Microsoft groupie, think about it. Windows XP, despite the draconian licencing (which is honestly their right), is so much easier to use than Linux it's not even funny, and it's just as stable. Internet Explorer is -- bar none -- the best browser today. Mozilla doesn't even come semi-close.
Groupie is not the word i would use toady or minion is a little more like it. Either way, please stop repeating the endless out of date FUD that Linux is hard to use. It's not and hasn't been for quite a while. Pretty much any modern distribution will install out of the box on pretty much any hardware. When the installation is finished you get a fully functional working system. Administration of the system can be performed via gui tools (if you so choose) and it is very straight forward and simple to do. Sure it's different, but it is certainly no more difficult, and if something goes wrong, usually it's pretty easy to figure out and fix. Windows is only easy if everything goes right, if something screws up, you are toast reboot, reinstall, reconfigure.
M$ is probably going to do this everytime they start a new production run. The end result however will be that they are going to end up with a whole series of slightly incompatable versions of the xbox. This will be a support nightmare for developers and will in turn lead to yet another buggy unstable M$ product that we all know and loath.
In a slightly off but related topic. Does anyone know the status of the 1.4 jdk? I know they had a Jaguar only beta out a while ago but it seems to have dissappeared. OS X has pretty good support for the 1.3.1 jdk, but Apple seems surprisingly behind on 1.4.
I used to deal with microserfs at IETF meetings. M$ can and does hire the smartest people they can. One of their biggest problems is that they do. What happens when you take a bunch of guys (and girls) that have spent thier whole careers (and lives) being the alpha geek and put them in a company full of other alpha geeks? The answer is: Windows. Alpha geeks generally don't like to follow each others lead, what you get is too many forces pulling in too many directions. M$ product don't suck because they are made by stupid people. They suck because they are made by people that can't work well together, and it shows.
I already run a server for my email and web pages, why not just add an IM service to it. It could store messages recieved when i'm not connected and proxy for me from anywhere. This puppy could also subscribe to all known IM systems for me kind of like a personal jabber.
I doubt that many people read or feel bound by click through agreements and even if they did, the chances are that they would not realize what they are agreeing to. Has anybody ever gone to court over one of these? My guess is no, and i seriously doubt that they would hold up if they did.
Not true. When you buy a Tivo what you get is a decent piece of special purpose hardware designed specifically for the task of recording tv. The second thing you get, and what makes Tivo far superior to everything else on the market, is an excellent UI and set of support software. Third, although not really an advertised feature, is that it is built on an open extensible platform. ie to some extent you can modify and add features that Tivo doesn't have. Fourth, and i suppose this is debatable, you get access (for a fee) to an excellent listing service.
All in all, the Tivo is worth every penny and while you could roll your own, the Tivo solution is much more polished and usable than what you will make at this point in time.
Where were you when this was happening. These viruses affected me and i don't run windows. I'm still getting hits on my webserver. I think the viruses last year showed just how bad things have gotten.
This is the same problem the Wabi had, it's easy to implement the API (assuming you can get documentation to it). But emulating the behaviour behind the call is much more difficult.
Why should Microsoft be forced to lose money and/or bend its business practices because someone wants to use another product than theirs.
Because they have a monopoly stupid! This is the whole point of the trial. The fact that M$ has a monopoly has been proven in court and upheld in appeal. The same goes for the fact that M$ abuses it's monopoly power to lock competitors out of the market place, and to inflate the price of their software. The purpose of this trial is to determine what to do to keep them from continuing these practices.
all these OEMs needed to do was get together and contest various parts of the licence agreement.
Yeah right, these companies compete heavily for a tiny piece of profit compared to what M$ gets on each sale. All M$ has to say to one is, shut your yap or i will give the other guy a better price on the O/S allowing him to undercut you on the bottom line.
Nethack vs Diablo

Nethack 3.4.0
·
· Score: 3, Insightful
When i first played Diablo all i could think was, "Hey this is just hack with a nice interface". All the same elements are there except that nethack has a depth and subtle complexity that Diablo lacks.

After all Diablo really is just a slick commercial version of rogue/nethack
Is the cost of the car to drive out to the bloody machine to reboot it everytime it crashes or needs work.

}(;) - It means Kiss my ass
It's better than getting fired for masterbating!

Absolutely, complaining is your best (and only recourse). The designers may choose to ignore you, but many don't.

Can we sick the BSA on M$ to audit their code for GPL infractions?

Simple, run on linux.
There is a way to build mozilla using native API's to take advantage of anti-aliasing and make it faster. Info here
Now that's a hacker friendly machine, Tivo has just gone way up in my opionion, i might even forgive them for jacking my fee :).
