Yes it will affect companies like Macromedia and Sun but this also affects microsoft too and many other companies. I won't argue with the fact that microsoft may want to enter those markets but to say they want plug-ins not to be allowed is ridiculous. Especially since like every new piece of web based microsoft software seems to work off of Active-X plugins. Your logic that because microsoft wants to dominate every area of the software market and this will could help them so they must be happy about it is seriously flawed. I guess it's not much of a concern though, as someone(probably microsoft themself) will right an after market hack for IE that will suppress the pop ups to use a plugin.
You don't pay for IE, sure you probably pay for it when you buy a windows license but they don't charge for it as a stand along product. What this means is financially it won't hurt them nearly as bad as it could others.
Companies that it will hurt are like macromedia and real who depend heavily on plug in functionality. User will be slow to migrate off IE so if there are annoying pop ups and stuff to use plugins people simply won't use many of them.

This will fail just like music industry sites. The rates are too high. Let's see for $3.99 I can rent it from blockbuster and watch it on my DVD player in high resolution and with dolby digital 5.1. Or for $3.99 I can go to this site and watch a low quality version on my computer with real player which means my computer will crash like 6 times because real player sucks. Which will I do? This is just a bad business model. Consumers want one of two things either like a low cost per view (Like 25 cents) or a flat rate like $10 or $20 a month. I'm more apt to deal with issues like studdering video or low quality or sitting in front of my computer to watch a movie if it's a good deal. These companies bring piracy on themselves because they are too greedy. There is incovience when dealing with digital files everyone of these companies needs to take that in to effect when setting thier prices. For music it's me taking the time to download the files then the time to burn them on to a CD. If it's gonna cost me $15 to do this I'd rather go to the store and just buy the thing. Same with movies, if I have to deal with downloading the video and it studdering, I'd rather go to blockbuster and spend the same amount of money there. Lastly, most cable companies already have something like this with thier on-demand service. Basically these companies need to really reevaluate thier business models online.
Love my shorten files but they aren't practical for most file downloads. While they reduce the file size of a whole CD, it is still pretty large maybe getting a 650mb cd down to 400mb. Though you don't loose any quality there are lots of types of music where the loss to an mp3 isn't noticable. The best replacement for mp3 is.AAC by dolby they are smaller than mp3's but sound better only problem is you still have to pay a licensing cost. Guess the days of free are gone.
As with all the paper MCSE's, certification doesn't mean anything. Just because your a super certified Java developer doesn't mean you can develop a quality product. There is more that goes into designing a quality product than coding. There is the backend system and and how it ties in to the current infastructure. Like where I currently work, they had programmers start doing backend work and what did we get? Cursors nested eight deep taking 30 minutes to run. Everyone of them can code a screen better than me but they can't set up database stored procedures worth a darn. Then you have things like front end screen design and if it's a web project you have branding to make sure it ties into the companies look. Then lastly with any project you have training. Which is the absolutely the most important part of implementing and getting any system to work correctly. If you can show a programmer that can bring all those skills together and isn't charging $250 an hour for anything they do, i'd be shocked.
The dollar of the bid amount is not necessarily what will win or lose you the account. It has to do with how the hours are devided for the work. At a difference of $10000 you obviously weren't giving the company the same service. For instance your database set up and schema was probably being produced by you the programmer where as the other company probably has a DBA to do it. That goes with every part of the project, you also probably planned to do the frontend design and feel yourself, where as the other company may have brought in a design consultant to make sure everything blended in with thier current products and the way they do business. Also with testing, they are probably a large company with multiple people to check the software for bugs. I personally, don't like people like you that come in trying to get a job by offering the lowest dollar not the best product. It makes my job harder when I have to come in after you and clean everything up and deal with an angry customer. When you turn a bid in always turn one in that will build the customer the best product not the cheapest. If you bid is high but they like the services your offering you'll get the deal no matter how low someon else is.
It depends on where your hires are falling short and what you expect of them. If your looking for an old fashioned "closet programmer" who knows the entire C syntax by heart but has the communication skills of a rock. Then simply give them a programming test during the interview. If your looking for a developer who will be working alot with customers don't worry so much about there deep technical skills. Make sure they understand concepts well, are good at listening to other's ideads, have good communication skills, and are problem solvers. Learning a new syntax can get better with time. You really need to classify your programmer based on what job he will be doing and not lump him into a generic group like a programmer. There are Design/Analyst, Data Analyst, Project Managers, and Coders. Also look more on how your bringing them in most development jobs I've had I felt out of place at for the first few months. Usually I get very poor training, a lot of companies have a tendancy to put thier best developer in charge of the other programmers this is often not the best idea since a lot of great programmers don't have great communication skills.

This is the kind of thing that needs legislation passed to prevent it from happening. They need to come up with a registar for open standards, similar to the patent office or something. When a group comes up with an open standard for something they file the standard in this registar. If someone has a patent on something in the standard they should have like one year to do something about it and anyone involved in filing the standard should be unable to claim a patent. If the holder of the patent lets something slide through the registar for a year with out noticing they should be unable to get royalties for the patent. This would prevent consumers from getting locked into a standard then a jerk ass company like this from trying to gouge them.
Spyware is a nasty thing in itself and i think ads on the desktop could be much more effective than internet ads because your not limited by internet technology. And if you don't think it would work, think of it this way if Micro$oft offered every consumer a savings of $100 on every copy of windows they bought if they ran ads on the desktop I guarantee 90% of people would run these ad enabled OS's to take advantage of the savings.
Half of these post say they wouldn't support ads on the desktop yet the same people say they click ads on sites they support. So if you really support open source software you wouldn't disable the ads. I also think that something like this could make advertising to a computer less annoying and the ads much more interesting and more effective. It gives the advertiser much more power. For example it could run tv style ads when you have everything minimized on the desktop. I personally think it could bring advertisers back. And I'm for anything that can bring more money to technology companies because 20 years from now I hope to still be able to find a job. And as much as I support open source the fact of the matter is if there is no money coming in I don't have a job. And I support anything that keeps me employed in the field that I like so I don't have to flip burgers at McDonalds.
Everyone seems so against the idea of putting ads on the desktop. I personally don't think it is a bad idea. If you did it on the desktop and not annoying pop ups that you had to close all the time it would be no big deal. I think you'd have to make sure the ads were acceptable and didn't advertise things such as pornography. But personally when using my computer I don't stare at the desktop I usually have something up and running covering the desktop anyways. And as we've seen with the internet bubble things that are free today may not be free tomorrow. If something like this could bring in additional revenue to open source projects and keep them free I see no harm what so ever in doing it. The only way it is a problem is when it interferes with the use of the software. As long as it doesn't interfere with anything I think it's a good idea.
I don't code games for a living but I thought I would check out thier toolset and documentation. While reading through the documentation there is a big note that for and while loops are not supported yet. They are eventually planned to be supported they just aren't yet. You'd think when deciding which functions to include in a programming language the ability to do a loop would be essential but I guess not maybe coding games is mostly event driven so you don't need loops very often. I just thought this was strange.

Up yours. It's what happened. And my overdraft protection was $300 to start with, the bank automatically raised it to $1500 when I hit the limit. They can do that you know. And the bank had no forwarding address because there was no need to I wasn't earning interest on the checking account. I went into the bank and supposedly closed the account but the overdraft protection is considered a seperate credit account. So when they bounced off the closed checking account they went over to the overdraft account. And why would I make up getting jacked for $1500. Your just a flamer. The only reason they ever even found me was I got a new car loan and my new address showed up on my credit report. And besides would you think that closing a checking account would leave an open overdraft account on the checking account. No you'd think closing the checking would close the overdraft protection. And in ending F$#@ you and F%^$ earthlink
I cancelled my earthlink account after I moved from minnesota to indiana. I also closed the checking account it was billing too. Well with the combination of how lousy earthlink is and overdraft protection on the checking account. I recieved a bill almost 2 years later from my bank for like $1500 from the billing earthlink continued to bill and all the fees and interest on the overdraft protection. I called earthlink and complained and they said they had no record of me canceling the service. I argued with everyone there to no avail. i was screwed so i cancelled it again. And paid off the $1500 balance luckily before it got put on my credit report. But it pissed me off I had to pay $1500 for nothing. So anyways 3 months go by and i got another bill from that bank for like $200 because earthlink kept billing well this time I called earthlink and had a cancellation confirmation from the previous time. They refunded the $20 a month charges but not the charges from the bank. I also called the bank and told them not to accept any more charges from earthlink. The bank then called like a month later. When earthlink continued to try to bill the account. This time thanks to the bank I had it blocked and the account eventually got closed at earthlink for failure to pay. But earthlink costed me a lot of money and is nothing but a complete rip off organization. I've also used MSN and unlike earthlink they continued to bill the first time I cancelled but when I called after seeing the continued billing they gladly refunded the money with out arguing with me about it and closed the account for good. So if for no other reason than they give good customer service msn is definately the way to go over earthlink. Earthlink will bleed you dry and because they never take enough from you where it's worth you hiring a lawyer they can do this.
