  1. MS & open-source on What's the Business Case for Microsoft and Open Source? · · Score: 1

so MS is considering open source. well, as one person before stated, MS is currently having its dominance in certain areas threatened. therefore,...

has it ever occured to anyone that MS might take exisiting open source projects and create their own version (while keeping it open source, because they dont lose anything) to make consumers/businesses feel secure because the box says microsoft. this way microsoft can still keep the exisiting projects closed source.

transmeta's income statement this was released on the 16th. i think it has some interesting numbers. if you look at net income (loss) at the bottom and add all 4 quarters up, thats the loss for the past 12 months. ouch, $179,432,000

  4. tier pricing on Preventing Broadband Price-Gouging? · · Score: 1

hmm, sounds interesting. from a company's standpoint, i can see why a flat rate is beneficial. first, a flat rate gives the company steady, predictable (based on the number of current subscribers) revenue. with erradict revenue, its tough to decide whether to boost marketing, r&d, wages, etc. also, the company makes more off of the flat rate. they have priced their service, so that on average, somewhere (assuming here) around 31% above the average costs of the bandwidth provided. so if you use very little bandwidth then they make a bigger gross profit (revenue minus cost of goods sold). if you use more, then this percentage shrinks. oh, but wait! the companies are now hedging on this situation and are starting to charge more for these 'power users'. with this strategy, the company will never make less than the percent mentioned earlier, whatever it really is.
now, do i a consumer like this, no. but that's how the company makes their money. the only thing that can change that is :::cough, cough Mr. Michael Powell, FCC chairman::: competition

ok, so im not sure what red hat wants to do. i mean, if they feel they are protecting these by patenting them themselves, then i think they are making a mistake. my understanding of patent law, is that if you do not aggresively defend your patents, including fighting those who use your patents, then you will lose the rights to them if challenged in court. in my marketing class we covered a case where a company went 5 years before challenging a competitor who was using a patent and then lost the right to the patent because they had not responded sooner and had waited 5 years. im curious in how red hat would plan on retaining ownership of these patents if others will be allowed to use them, presumably for free.

my favorite image of IBM is this grainy, old, black & white video of an IBM store (presumably in NY) and it was just filled with huge copiers and other business necessities like coffee makers and jolt cola dispensers. ok, the last part was false. but the video gives the viewer a good sense of how a company must adapt/re-invent itself in order to survive its products' life cycles.

these guys would just find out little companies (traded OTC [over the counter], not on the nasdaq or NYSE) that were being investigated by the FBI for wrongdoing. then, the guy would borrow a lot of shares of the company (these were very small companies, so we;re talking about penny stocks. i.e., $0.42 a share) then immediately sell them, trash the company and recommended selling the shares on their website and then waited for news about the FBI investigating them to break. this would, invariably, cause the stock to drop substantially (a drop from $0.42 to $0.21 would be a 50% drop) then these guys would re-buy the stock and give it back to whomever they borrowed it from. this gave them a substantial profit.

they were finding out which companies were being investigated by the FBI and then trading based on that information. it wasnt because of gov't data collecting, but, rather, because of gov't investigating.
