this is one reason why i will not work for a software company writing software (maybe a sys admin or other something for a while, but not a developer)... when i get my bachelor of science degree, i will get my masters, then my Ph.D, and do research the rest of my life, and my software ideas will be "donated" to the open source/free software movement.
i met a guy at my lug who runs a consulting company, and all the webpages that they do, there is an "invisible link" put at the bottom that refers back to their site. invisible in the fact that it's the same color as the background... supposedly it's pretty effective as his site.... if only i could remember it... is highly ranked on google.
since there are over a 1000 posts, sorry if this is repeated.. i use a floppy for a mini distribution called toms [toms.net]. its fun to play around with. also linuxrouter [linuxrouter.org] is another distro that fits on a floppy and as the name implies is great as a router.
how could this ever work? first of all you would have to get enough people to have the screensaver to be worth while. you would have to have someone buy add space, and further more, it would have to be contributing to one project only... And another thing, someone who is advertising is going to want a guarantee that their add is even being displayed... you can just turn off a screensaver... or, change it to something else, and how would that benefit the company who's advertising? the thought of the idea is good, but, it doesn't seem realistic.
linux is not ready by any means for people who don't want to really play with their computer, windows is, but unfortunatly you need to deal with the garbage that is microsoft. but, where linux succeeds (and i really should stress succeeds) is as a programming environment, servers, and for people who really want to play around and learn something fun and entertaining. in time linux will be ready to support the hardware that microsoft can, but for now, we are limited to what people develop, basically what the smart people need for their personal use. or we have to become the smart one.
does the xbox come with an EULA the prohibits messing with the internal software? it would be interesting to see microsofts reaction (the real one, not some tv, or newspaper description) if this project were complete.
In all, they seized 23 computers, including three laptops; three hard drives, and 13 cable modems.
ok, and the 3 hard drives had what to do with anything? give me a break, i could transfer 40 gigs of pr0n from cd to my hard drive and not even use the cable modem.. so if they think this is evidence, they are sadly mistaken...
very crappy movie, very crappy acting.
according to hackers (1995) i could hack the government with a series of commands like this:
$ hack gov't
Welcome to the Government!
Login:
Password:
Authorized, proceed...
# be root
Password:
Welcome root. You have new mail.
# put my h4x0r3d site up
# get me out of here
and then the government website is cracked, and a new "I cracked you" page is up.
gessh, even Linux himself doesn't believe it should be called GNU/LINUX.. (Revolution OS) and besides where in the GPL does it say anything about putting GNU/ in front of anything released under the gpl???
i'm not sure if mozilla is released under the gpl, but if it is, we don't call it GNU/Mozilla, or is that what we're doing now?
i do realize that it's GNU/Linux, because without GNU Linux would just be a kernel. correct. but, this is why we have distro's such as RedHat, Caldera, Debian, Turbo, SuSE, etc. It's called RedHat Linux or Caldera openLinux, or whatever.
Therefore if this trend continues, RMS will have to 1. Change the GPL -- Which would put him on the $hitlist w/ other people/incs. like M$, and UNISYS, or 2. STOP WITH THE GNU/ PREFIX!
yeah.. to bad my girlfriend isn't into opensource, or computers... then again, would i really want al l you guys gawking at her?? and then trying to grep her digits or something similar...
1.what would the purpose be of changing the name of a language. that's like saying, "ok, c++ is now gonna be known as d, because we've decided to rid the ++ operator."
2.let's go changing major parts of html as well. instead of opening a document with the html tag title and body, we'll call it, cow duck and chicken. but, since we did that we have to rename the language to farm.
3.it's not a very good idea to build such a user/fan base of a language and then just go changing it all around. perl (or whatever the hell it's going to be called) is going to suffer severely as a result.
4.the opensource world already lacks something of major importance, and that's the standardization of many things. it's all well and good that we can have 7 or 8 different window managers/environments to choose from. on the other hand it sucks to try to compile one and see that you don't have a specific library it needs. so, unless i'm mistaking and read the article a little backwards, we're going to have a hell of alot of code that is going to have a hell of a time running on the new "perl".
5.so what if this new regex engine is faster. the point is we already have many different rules for regular expressions from languages to programs, now, we're adding one more, and changing a language that has become one of the MOST POWERFUL and USEFUL languages in computing! (arguably)
6.the _ONLY_ way i see this as a benefit is if this breaks off as a totally new language and the perl that is now, continue to be developed along side of this "new" lanugage. Kind of like perl++ if you wanna call it that.
7. i probably am making alot of people mad, so i'll stop now, and apologize.
i wonder how many previously solaris administrators and just solaris people out there have seen this and thought of a switch to linux or a bsd... oh wait! my boss!
that way, if they die no one will care... oh, and if for some reason everything is ok and they make it there... something will happen that nasa won't get them back here (i.e. not enough fuel, or some miniscule error in math)... so we win either way!
this makes me very happy considering i'm broke and want to be able to play aggressive inline game, which will be for gamecube as well as psx and xbox, i think. anyway, i'll probably still go with psx....
while i was in high school, we had a computer store which provided just a lan to play quake, quake2, and starcraft. there were only about 6 of us who went, but since we went everyday we kept the place in business. since you are in a city, it'll be much easier to keep a business. other things to consider are these.
1. High speed connection. the less lag there is the more people will want to play. if people are connecting to a server with 20-30 ping they'll come back if they are hardcore enough.
2. For security in a windows environment check out something like fortress (spelling?) using that, you can restrict access from installing software, blah blah blah. basically it'll save your ass from the liscensing problems.
3. provide a comfortable environment. comfy chairs, well, designed sort of Jazz cafe type thing. Like $tarbuck$ usually has. People will feel more relaxed and will stay longer.
4. Provide the daily news papers, and other various magazines, such as Wired, gaming magazines, and other things of that nature. Also magazines with current events and things.
5. As someone pointed out, an x-terminal environment might work out, but, gaming would probably be an issue. so you possibly consider that for "Dedicated Browser Machines."
6. Software liscensing. As far as I am aware, as long as it is liscenced to ONE pc only, there shouldn't be a problem with letting other people use the PC. Read Mr. Gate'$ article on donating pcs, and if something happens, blame it on him. It should be the same idea.
7. Provide food, such as bagels, pastries, coffee, and other such drinks that people enjoy.
8. As far as security of the place goes, it's really a matter of what kind of area you live in. If theres a police station across the street, you probably don't need MUCH else. Of course cameras should probably be installed, as well as a safe for liscenses and other things you could get in trouble for not having if they got stolen.
for the record, the place that i hung out at during high school (with 5 other people) had, chips, soda, and some candy bars, 7 computers (one for a dedicated server) and didn't have an internet connection. just the 7 computers on a lan, and we had a blast! I also lived in a very small town (maybe 3000 people)
this is one reason why i will not work for a software company writing software (maybe a sys admin or other something for a while, but not a developer)... when i get my bachelor of science degree, i will get my masters, then my Ph.D, and do research the rest of my life, and my software ideas will be "donated" to the open source/free software movement.

this is only due to the fact that there are more people running linux than there are windows...
it may have taken 8 hours, because they had to reboot twice.
they have microsoft project =)

how about those halloween movies? how many times is jamie lee curtis gonna kill off that friggin villian?
the same company who owns MSnbc?
fine. whatever. you can use GNU/Linux, i'll stick with Linux.

this makes me very happy considering i'm broke and want to be able to play aggressive inline game, which will be for gamecube as well as psx and xbox, i think. anyway, i'll probably still go with psx....
so.. now we'll have people trying to get to www.imaprofessional.com.pro great. i can't wait to hear it from computer stupid people.
