Most porn companie are clueless,...They get a MAJOR SCREWING from hosting companies that charge big $$ to figure out how to handle the load.
Real porn companies don't host, they colocate. And real porn companies - real porn companies - are well advanced beyond your Slashdots and your CNN.coms. They don't push an agenda, they push what serves millions of page views without 500s or login problems or 'nothing to see here, move along' warnings. Porn is always bleeding edge on the technology front. And porn made the internet what it is today.

You got me there. Honestly, I never tried to turn of the lightbulb. But could you inform me on the following: How to not not capitalize the first letter of an entry in a spreadsheet field AND default.txt files to open as csv in spreadsheets AND set default delimiter to tab AND default text entries to not be delimited with quotes? I'd be happy solving just the first two.
Aside from that, I love OO and linux, I use them near 100% of the time. My comment was really more a jab at people who love to hate Microsoft but are blind to obvious faults and failures in OSS.
Jesus what an asshole this parent poster is. Someone asks for advice and this arrogant guy calls them incompetent for not being born with the knowledge. Someone please mod him troll; this is exactly why non-techies think we're all arrogant.
Sorry, but an "Ask Slashdot" on how to set up a high traffic web site???? That is not just something you go out and do. If you are working on such a project, have no experience and your first inclination is to run to Slashdot for advice because you have no idea what you are doing, then maybe you shouldn't be doing it. This guy isn't asking, "hey, i'm setting up a blog, what's better php/postgres or perl/mysql", he's asking "hey, i'm setting up a site that is going to get massive amounts of traffic and I have no idea what I am doing." He might as well be asking, "Hey, I have to fly 400 people in a 747 tomorrow, but I have no idea how the plane works. Could you give me some advice?"
Okay, let's put it to a real test. Post some good pr0n links and we'll try to slashdot them!
Having worked for porn sites, I will tell you this: They, more than anybody, will rise to the challenge. Porn = Traffic = Ad Click Throughs = Money. If a porn site sees a sudden rise in traffic, they will drop more servers into their delicately load balanced system without blinking an eye. Porns sites aren't slow. There is a reason why.
Seriously...they know all about serving up content on high traffic sites. Not only is it high traffic, but it's rather big files that they're delivering.
True dat. And the answer will be proprietary load balancing and firewall, FreeBSD, mysql, mod_perl, apache and squid.
And Open Office sez: Hey, hey, I'm a lightbulb!! Lower right hand corner? HELLO? LIGHTBULB HERE! That means I have an idea to make your life better...HEY LOOK AT ME! HAHA preferences - they mean nothing. Just try and turn me off! YOU CAN'T! Oh, let me capitalize that first letter for you in your spreadsheet. WHAT? You don't like that? Preferences you say? Perhaps you didn't hear me the first time.
Instead, they favor giving stock awards; basically like a bonus.
Stock awards have a serious downside - you have to pay taxes on them. My company would happily give me stock in place of options because they can write it off as an expense.
As to your racist comment, here's some news for you: The entire world is racist.
More people than not on this planet are racists. White people are racist.
Black people are racist. Asians are racist. Muslims are racist. Jews are
racists. Indians are racists. Russians are racists. Tribal people are
racists. You give me an ethnicity and I will give you instances of racism.
Racism is everywhere, comes in all forms and subtleties, and will never go away.
It's nice to wish that it would, but that is a pipe dream.
As to corruption, sure your government is corrupt, our government is corrupt,
but again, here's some more news for you: All governments are corrupt.
As for the US not protecting other nations? Sorry but we protect them all the
time, at a huge monetary cost. You think those US military bases in the Korean
DMZ are for show? You think the US Military bases in Saudi Arabia are just for
fun? Do you think the US Naval presence in the Gulf is there on a holiday (it
would be there even with out the war in Iraq.) Those forces are there for
protection. We are protecting those countries from themselves, of the stupid
things they might do if we weren't there.
Anyway you look at it, the US can't win in the eyes of the rest of the world and
be popular on top of that. Look at Darfur, Jamaica, Cuba - people bitch because
the US does nothing. When Iraq took over Kuwait, people still bitched that it
was none of our business. If Paraguay suddenly decided they wanted to annex a
nice chunk of your country stretching to the Atlantic and you couldn't stop
them (just a scenario, not saying they could or would), and no one would help
you, you'd come running to the US in a second. And you can be damn sure, half
the US and half the world would bitch about it. We're damned if we do and
damned if we don't.
As I said, without the US, this planet would descend into lawlessness. Of
course I have no way of knowing, but if Kerry was elected, I bet North Korea
would perform an underground nuclear test within 6 months. I can pretty much
guarantee that won't happen under Bush. Same goes for Iran, because Bush would
support a preemptive strike by the Israelis, regardless of what the rest of the
world thought. And that is the right move. Kerry would wrap it up in the UN,
nothing would happen, and Iran would go nuclear. And they are so full of
ideological hatred they would nuke Israel, most likely with the secret blessing
of every Arab country in the Middle East.
As for you're remarks about fat people, you're right, there are tons of fat
people in the US and it sickens me. My personal racism is against fat people, I
hate them for their lazy, slovenly fatness. I'd like to point out one of
Kerry's few attacks on Bush outside of Iraq was on health care cost going up in
the US. Well, they went up because of the epic number of fat people in the US.
Kerry would have been more correct in blaming fat people on Bush rather than
rising health care costs.
One final thing, when a country gets hit by a 9/11 type terrorist attack, or
repeated terrorist attacks, they act. Isreal acts and they will preempt if
necessary. Russia, with all its corrupt opposition to the invasion of
Iraq, announced they will perform preemptive strikes against terrorists. This
came just days after the massacre in Beslan. If it happens to you, and you have
the power, the choice is pretty damn clear.
Our money and power has loaned your country more than 300 billion dollars which you can't even begin to pay back. You don't have 'war crimes' because you are too weak to protect even yourselves. However, you have plenty of crimes against humanity. Your police are nothing more than common criminals who murder people they think are a burden on your society. Face it, the world needs a strong US whether you or anyone else likes it. Without the US, there would probably hundreds of wars raging all over the planet. Most countries think twice about war because they know what the US reaction would be. North Korea would have long ago invaded South Korea. North Korea would have nuked Japan, it has the capability now. Kuwait would be Iraq. Iran would nuke Isreal the minute they had the capability. India and Pakistan would already have traded nuclear vollies. China would have taken over Taiwan and Hong Kong. Ethnic cleansing would be going on in Bosnia, Chechnyia, and probably about 10 different countries in Africa. Civil wars would be raging all over your continent, Africa and Central America. The only place there would be any semblence of peace would be western Europe and North America and Australia. You want that? If the US stops handing out cash to damn near every country in the world and returns all of its armed forces home, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU WILL GET.
And why is it that so many people immigrate to the US? Because it's the best, most powerful, richest country on earth. And why is it that so many people hate the US? Because it's the best, most powerful, richest country on earth. I bet you'd ditch your country in a second if you were granted US citizenship. And if you wouldn't, I bet it wouldn't take 5 minutes to find 10 of your neighbors who would. You might read posts on Slashdot about people who say they are going to leave the US, but that is crap. None of them are going to leave (unless maybe they have AIDS, which is one of the few things your country has done right.) When foreigners come to this country, they fucking love it. Every foreigner I know who has come here to go to school, or do something like a post doctoral fellowship or for a job has ended up staying. They love this country. In your case, Rio might be a nice place to visit but no one wants to live there because when you set aside the hotels and the beaches (which is why people visit), it's a SLUM.
I'm glad you got that cleared up. Now, I think the leader of your death squad is calling. He says it's time to get back to executing homeless children in the streets of whatever Brazillian city you live in.
4 MORE YEARS! Wait a minute, before you mark this troll or flamebait. I'm talking about 4 MORE YEARS OF SLASHDOT! Slashdot has been on the verge of death lately and probably couldn't survive a Kerry victory. With another 4 more years of Bush, Slashdot is virtually guaranteed an extra 2-5 stories per week that generate 1300+ comments and thus traffic and ad revenue. Look in the HOF, all the top stories are politically related. Thanks to Bush's victory, Slashdot will generate enough add revenue to continue. We should all be happy.
So are we just getting an odd set of precincts reporting first, or is the official vote vastly different (statistically speaking) from the exit polls?
Speaking for myself, if someone I know (in real life, not the from the internet) asks me who I am for, I tell them it's not their business. If a pollster asks me, I am as likely to lie as I am to tell them I am not comfortable divulging my choice. I think if you are for Bush, you are probably a little more inclined to decline or lie. <flamebait> Probably something to do with the rabid hatred demonstrated repeatedly by some liberals.</flamebait>
What about those of us who dislike all the candidates... Nader and Badnarik included?
I participate in every election where I live. I vote by absentee and once or twice, I have submitted my ballot without voting for anything. But I always vote.
And I am proud that I always vote for who I want and never who I am against. I vote that way every election, for every candidate or issue - my choice or abstain. Lesser of two evils, vote trading, whatever - that's a a cop out.
No kidding. The Apache section is like Ralph Nader. It's always there, it gets about 1% as many comments as any other section, a boring story about it still hits the headlines now and again, but you try to get rid of it and it gets all crazy.
Heh, that reminds me: About 3 or 4 years ago, I was up late fixing some server issue. While I was waiting around I checked Slashdot and saw a story in the Apache section about some Apache conference or party or something that was taking place in Belgium or Norway, I can't remember exactly. It had been up for hours, maybe even days with no comments. So, thinking it would be like taking candy from a baby, I first posted. About a week later, I checked the same story and the only post was my first post. I think that story got archived with that single post.
Ah, but mkdir has had bugs in the past. I can't remember exactly, but at one time mkdir had a race condition problem affecting ownership and permissions (akin to not using transactions in sql). I think it has had other bugs as well.
Linus Torvalds repeatedly misspelled the word 'kernel' in smp.c. Twice he wrote 'kernl' and three times he used 'kernal'. Not being a Slashdot regular, you might not know how important spelling is. This might not move any users to BSD, but it could keep a few nerds from recompiling their kernal until patches are submitted.
