There is no way to compare flaws in Windows and Linux, and every attempt to do so is misguided
Well if you are ready for a good laugh... Check out this story about Google Bombing. The Motley Fool lives up to his name again.
The other lesson for investors is that Microsoft, contrary to the overwhelming chatter, isn't the only source of computer vulnerabilities. Some reports claim that Linux, the open-source operating system peddled by dozens of outfits, including Red Hat (Nasdaq: RHAT), Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW), and IBM (NYSE: IBM), is already the world's most oft-breached OS, comprising 65% of security compromises compared to Windows' 25%.
I'm not sure where this information comes from, but some reports think he pulled those numbers out of his ass.
I think VIA is probably one of the more opensource friendly hardware manufacturers. You'll probably get very decent documentation for almost any of their chipsets here. What you get from there is a reference implimentation of a driver, and there is a link to where you get datasheets on there as well. I've still yet to hear back from ATI after requesting just the NDA, never mind the documentation. I wouldn't even waste my time inquiring about nVidia.
Not many people care about controlling their computer in the sense that he's blabbing on about.
So how many users care that they aren't allowed to just grab software from their favourite P2P application and use it whenever/however they choose? Should I be morally opposed to that behaviour any more than the proprietary crowd is about free software?
I'm fairly unopinionated when I see people running eMule, and stealing other peoples work. That doesn't mean it isn't wrong, just that I don't really care. In fact I wish software houses would crack down on piracy like the MPAA/RIAA does, because that alone would push the value of open/free software higher.
Point is, just because I don't take a stand on some issue doesn't mean it isn't important.
in the last 72 hours.. Where are all these IIS servers that are being targeted? Apache outnumbers them 2 to 1. Wouldn't it make more sense to target Apache?
Somehow I was able to get in. I can't hit the main page, but my Firefox LiveBookmark for Slashdot is still working, and clicking them gets me here logged in. Interesting. First non-AC post? Haha
Because as of very recently, they had upstream of 15kB/s, and downstream 150kB/s. They require PPPOE which is unnecessary garbage. Your IP changes daily, sometimes more because of that garbage. They filter incoming traffic on port 80 to prevent you from running apache on the standard port. They have a "transparent" proxy for web traffic that screws up some sites. I too had very frequent down times, and phoning MTS tech support is only slightly more pleasurable than getting hit by a large truck.
MTS doesn't offer anything that equals the speed of Shaw. Even the mid-range package from Shaw equals the speed of MTS's "faster" package, without all the PPPOE hassles.
TV over phone lines won't arrive in 2005, it arrived back in the 90s
I don't know about the 90's, but the phone company here has been pushing this for a year or two now. I wouldn't trust them for television service though, I suffered with their broadband service for a few months before finally getting Shaw back. Unless you switch to both services from the same company, you lose the benefits of their "bundled" price packages.
Let me know when the cable company is giving out phone numbers, then I'll be interested.

Let me help you a bit with ATI and my experiences.
What a horrible example. A Rage128 driver was developed with funding from ATI for XFree86 v4, and that driver was later extended to support Radeon cards. Thats exactly the kind of thing they should get back to doing, and something that nVidia never has been interested in. Its why we have a decent free ATI driver now, and none for nvidia.
I have described exactly what are the issues with the binary drivers.
No you haven't. I don't know how anyone sees the benefits of free/open software in GNU/Linux, and then supports companies that don't give out hardware documentation, and don't do anything to help free software developers.
You know what you're getting when you go buy the latest and greatest hardware. Don't buy it if it's not adequately supported. I don't.
Why can't you let us bitch and moan about the real problems we have?
Because you're being stupid about it. From the fool who submitted this that is switching distro's only to expect the same drivers to operate differently, to those that are posting messages in this thread that don't even reflect reality.
The binary drivers are a non-issue. It would be more productive to talk about all the great things that are happining with the free driver, and hopefully convince ATI to get back into funding its development.
Its got nothing to do with ego's (well maybe a little), and everything to do with telling ATI exactly what we need from them.
I'm talking about the free driver. The story is talking about the ATI binary driver.
Even with this older hardware using OSS drivers, I couldn't come up with how I should be able to have 3D-acceleration (Utah-GLX) and video capture (Gatos)
Well thats probably because Utah-GLX isn't what you want. DRI is, and its included with Xorg. And you can use Gatos and DRI at the same time.

Speaking of which, heads up for anyone in the area:
The D are playing in New Zealand & Australia next week.
Get there if you know whats good for you.
as a rule, store 2-3 extra bottles in the car when you visit a party, you can never be sure who will show up
Take a cab to the party please. I don't want to die on Christmas.
Oh, thanks
You're welcome.

the food company doesn't really lose its 'copyright' when it prints ingredients
I don't know what gives you the idea that publishing source code ammounts to relinquishing your copyright, but it does not.
And what the GP was talking about was API's, as opposed to code.
To use GTK+ as an example, API's look like this
Whereas code looks like this.

Except for some self-enlightened, 14 year old hypocrites on slashdot who cant code hello world, let alone a complex program like GIMP
;)
And those that have never heard of virtual desktops maybe. Stay tuned though, Microsoft is scheduled to innovate that in its next release.
It's probably not too difficult to figure out what they are doing. Although it might be.. I mean really, DLL's in a CVS repository. Whats up with that.

wonder what the bug was
Whatever it was, it still is. I still get a 503 from the main page.

They do not filter port 80
Yes they do.
I have also seen my downstream peak to over 220kB/s latley
I'll stick with my 600+ thanks.

Bullshit. Maybe you're thinking of Codeweavers?
I personally don't care what you do. I don't claim anything except that you are a child who is talking out of his ass.
Yep, thats what it says. Congrats! You can read that page, now try reading this thread.
What the hell are you talking about now?
Let me help you a bit with ATI and my experiences.

When did I say that? I was responding to someone else's comment:
- "ATI drivers for cards later than 9200 (IIRC), that have any 3D support, are not free either. And they will never be"
when you made your ignorant staements. If you want to participate in these discussions, it really helps to read them first. Why can't you let us bitch and moan about the real problems we have?

Apparently so, because the complaint here is:
I can play Tuxracer and UT2004 just fine.
So you said the same thing yourself.
