Ok, I can see that you're disturbed by this. But if you don't want to see the movie, just don't go. It's not like you live in a country where you're forced to see bad movies do you?
And how harmful is that? I don't mind giving it to you as well.
I don't mind being registered at all sorts of places. I do mind if the information is used without my consent.
I like doctors having my history on file. I don't like them handing out the information to insurance companies (fortunately, the aren't allowed to do that)
Last year I was called by a someone from one of these financial expert firms. So he asks me if I'm interested in one of their products, and I say "NO". Then he asks me if he may pay us a visit to explain their products. "No" is my reply. Then he goes on to say that their products are the best and can't be beaten etc. Tired of the conversation I tell him that I want to hang up.
"If I give you 50 bucks, will you listen to me for half an hour?"
At first I thought he was joking, but apparently he was so desperate that he even offered to money to hear him out. 50 bucks for half an hour seemed like a good deal, and even if he didn't pay us it would make a good story to tell my grandchildren so I accepted.
The guy came to our house, asked for the number of my bank account, explained his products during half an hour (for which I obviously had no interest) and left. A few days later the 50 bucks had been deposited in my account.
I to have been using linux at my desktop for many years now, and liking it very much.
However, when compared to windows, everything appears to be very slow. Launching of windows, getting visual feedback, it's all a bit snappier on windows, on the same pc. I think most people that come from a windows world trying linux+KDE or something will be disappointed with the speed of operation.
Maybe in a couple of years, with processors in the 100GHz range this won't matter anymore (although a new layer will be added by then to slow things down even more) but for now I see a lot of hurdles to overcome
All this does it piss off everyone with a normal TV when they get a semi letterbox picture for no reason other than the 2 people and a dog who bought a PAL Plus TV.
I know of two people who have a PalPlus TV, plus I myself have one. I guess that explains my urges to retrieve every bone people throw.
It's good to see a book slashed to pieces every now and then.
it's not enough to know which books to read, but also which ones to avoid.
Also: walk away from any book with a substring "made easy" in the title. For dutch readers I recommend you stay away from any book written by Leen Ammeraal.

Well, I'm still having trouble with 2.4.17 on my AMD. A couple of weeks ago it was suggested here that I should add "nopentium" to my boot parameters but after that the machine doesn't feel as fast anymore (can't understand why; it should not be noticable)
Parsing the changelog, I don't see that many changes with potential enormous impact. Should I consider trying this version because many problems are straightened out or should I wait for a next "stable" 2.4.x?
I did see something regarding AGP (which I believe to be the source of my problems, as they go away if I disable 3D support) Linus said something about a workaround for AGP problems until a real solution was found. Doesn't look very encouraging, but hey...
You know, the project in which strains of program code had to survive, mutate and grow in an artificial world. The project seems to have been canceled, but a search on google still reveals a lot of its details.
The programs had to battle for cpu cycles in order to survive. Interestingly, when the project became distributed (ie, ran on the net) the programs seemed to move to the computers that were mostly idle.
what we really need is a sequel to the Leisure Suit Larry adventures!
Once I saw this headline, Larry immediately popped up on my brain. I guess I still consider those old and small adventures as the best.
Anyone remember the Dallas Quest (C64)?

There is nothing like a golden era of the net. You just remember a period of relative peace, stability and comfort in which you accidentally stumbled on the internet and decided to spend some time with it. The internet is exciting NOW, and you are living in the present. Stop whining about the good old days.
No, he's not saying that. You add where you should count.
Obviously p is for pause
The problems that can be solved in a practical manner with dna computing are small. For real problems, you need a sea full of dna. Bummer.
Jon Katz should have a review of this by now.
Why is the typical slashdot user such a fanatic about privacy? I really can't fathom why anyone would go to such lengths to protect his files.
I have maybe two or three files I would prefer not to show to anyone else, and I keep those on a cdrom, locked in a closet.
Or are you afraid anyone is going to see your huge collection of porn?
Yeah. Why don't you just read

Please mod this up. It's funny and it's true.
The pope of free software. ROTFLMAO!!
What if the McDonalds employee of the month responds with

and slashes you with his light sabre?
(sue them of course)
What if you used the energy gained from shaking to shake the palm every 15 minutes?
oh wait...
Did they have to add "option=nopentium" to the lilo boot parameterlist? :-)
(Seriously though, I hope they haven't left the extended paging bug in)
