well, the fakt that the nvidia drivers have a kernel-module portion would explain that true-crash (not only console crash).

I suspect your crashes are AGP-related (the kernel module deals with AGP, which is a clue). I have a driver/card combo to work flawlessly on the ASUS a7v266e mobo (yay, Q3 and shit run perfectly, fast writes and all that shit enabled) and suck my nuts on a cheap-ass soyo. Same thing for a TNT2 and a GF4ti, so no card issue.

The lesson I learned is, if your mobo r0x, use nvidia's internal agp support for awesome performance. If it sucks, stick to the kernel's agpgart.o for a bit less performance but improved reliability (hell, even go to AGP2x or 1x if it still quirks, disable fast writes and stuff, and NEVER forget the mem=nopentium boot parameter)

x86 nvidia drivers are a pity if you need OpenGL. go try play q3 with that... sucks ass. Give Nvidia's drivers a chance.

    cheers.

    > people rag on windows for needing a reboot when you install new hardware. no-one ever complained that you have to recompile your whole kernel with the new hardware support until now.

oh fuck off... what kind of hardware can you install without rebooting on a PC? thats right, only USB/firewire/whateveralike devices. Can you hotswap HDs, CPUs, PCI cards (yeah I know there is PCI hotplug now, but not in the real world - and linux supports PCI hotplug), AGP cards or whatever shit on ordinary PCs? I think not, hotswapping is for big iron.

So basically, installing new *non hotswappable* hardware makes you reboot, be it windoze, linux or whatever fuck.

What ppl rag about is having to reboot the fucking windoze every time you install a shitty piece of SOFTWARE!!! Changed a DLL? reboot. Changed some registries? reboot. Changed a driver? reboot. Fuck it, it sucks, and under linux you NEVER have to do that. For example, on my shitty laptop I just hotswap network (pcmcia, ofcourse) cards and everything is fine and dandy. it just rmmods the old driver and modprobes the new one. no reboot, no downtime, no stress. Same for every fucking hotswappable shit like USB or firewire. Try that on 9x/ME or NT... LOL. 2k/XP works, I must admit, unless some DLL/registry gets changed... then reboot.

About the recompiling kernel thing, freaks like me even find it amusing, and avg joes does not need that if they stick to stock kernels, which usually have everything modularized, in a way you can mess around with your hardware anyway you like without pain. Ofcourse the performance of stock kernels sucks ass compared to a custom built, but everyone is happy. In windoze you are basically locked.

    cheers.

    uuuuh dude...

when I upgraded my game box from 98 to 2k, I spent whole 2 days researching/tweaking it so it would not suck so hard. Needed to get a pci register editing thing for the aureal vortex2 card to work properly, had to get another thing (registry tweak thing) to make opengl/directx work with a refresh rate other than the pathetic default of 60hz, and I am still seeking some way to make the (man this is unbelievable) *Microsoft* SW FFpro joystick to give me force feedback instead of acting like a $5 joystick.

Took like 1 hour to compile/install NVdriver on lunix (yeah it dualboots). Even twinview is working *flawlessly* so I can watch pirated divx on the TV. Quake3Arena runs much better on it than most games on win2k...

I suggest you review yer thoughts, troll fella.
