Honest question in response: Why is SUSE 10 so damn slow?
I tried it. I liked it, everything went smooth in the (1.5 freaking hour) install, updates worked well (eventually, took an eternity, but it worked)
I tried both the std installer and the ""GM" demo DVD. both worked well, except...
The only issues I could NOT overlook/overcome were actual speed of DOING anything--- my perviously speedy-enough 2800+ Barton box was suddenly filled with molasses. OO.org tool even LONGER to load, Mozilla took ~2X as long, etc.
I tried a vanilla kernel, tried various optimizations, made sure only the minnimum required services were running... No joy. Eventually wiped the partition for Knoppmyth, testing a cooker/Ubuntu release or some such.
Back to Mandrak.. er... Mandriva2006, on a 2800 Barton, 440MX video card and 1GB memory.(2x512M/dual channel 5552 timings)
"...IT directors to call it 'cheaper' than Linux, considering the fact that maintanance is always an order of magnitude more costly than buying software."
Tell me what's cheaper when your network gets overrun by a nasty virus, that infects all your machines, starting with the servers, and starts wiping drives, and end up costing unimaginable work and funds to even start to fix.
Please don't whine that "That's impossible!!!" or any such BS, it has HAPPENED, and is likely to happen again.
Monoculture sucks. Thank MS for all your potential cost savings. You pay for what you get perhaps.
(...And for some inexplicable reason, many if not most of the places that got hosed the worst are STILL 100% MS shops. I'm not bitter or anything...Concerned.)
That's what my one remaining neuron came up with first.
I figured RH finally decided to throw a few bones from their warchest at whoever is licensing MP3/mpeg4/divx and actually compete with MS/MCE, legally.
On a pretty wide range of documented hardware, it's a no brainer (see knoppmyth)
I "discoverd" System Of A Down on a mix CD my son made for me. (I'm an old head-banger, he knows what I might like)
Hit Amazon for some more...Much to my Horror, SOAD is with Sony/BMG... (who will _never_ get my money for hardware or music, ever, soley based on their past corporate behavior)
Only times I can score a CD is by hitting CD Wherehouse (used CDs) and hoping for the best.
I'm sorry you feel so bad about it, but most US citizens are simply secure in the knowledge that Dubya cannot run again.
The NSA should be disbanded/absorbed into the CIA for going along with this crap. They're smart folks, and should know better. Dumbass---er..Dubya (and all his Gestapo) belong in prison IMHO, not that I ever see that happening, but what goes `round comes `round as is said.

Commercial VoIP terminations (like the ones Vonage et al ship) run either Linux or VXWorks, or something similar, don't they?
What's the downside of simply using OpenSSH tunnelling between the terminating devices? (assuming the compression/decompression is also done at the ends)
The key exchange is already handled, BSD licsense etc...
Sounds fair to me.
I have no problem with 2 years per record.
In 660,000 years, they'll be out of jail and back in society.
Oh, wait...

Awesome... I LOVE Duck...
Firefly did not die of idiots not "getting" it...
The Network KILLED it, by showing the episodes in random order, at seemingly random times, if at all.
Any show with any kind of story arc would die the same death if given the same treatment.
Diamond-like-carbon (DLC) has been used to make scratch resistant plastic for years.
It is either sputtered on or PECVD, applied under vacuum.
It _is_ carbon glass.
It exists already, just not made using the high pressure method the article blathers on about.
"...Previously only a single leg of the creature, known as Gansus yumenensis, had been found." ...But did it taste like CHICKEN???

Just also had to try it---
I seen no corruption or slowdown in Konq 3.4.2, on Mandriva 2006.
(Barton 2800+, 1G ram, 440Mx)
OK, non-contact vibrator for chicks.
Could probably just use a piercing w/ rare earth magnet in it.
You'd never get 'em away from the power transformers....
Only ~1000 miles off target.
:-)
Your aim really sucks, Dude.
Give Intel "The Finger?"

My thoughts are along the same lines---

No luck yet.

We pissed them away while watching American Idol and not voting.
It was once said religion was the opiate of the masses---
(Marx? Lenin? Stalin??? One of them got something right anyway...)
Now we have TV, which is closer to the crack cocaine of the masses.
TV on, brain turns off.
Oooo...I have to fire up MythTV and watch Alias, bye...
You must be new here...
I, for one, welcome our new midget ovelords!
(I know the parrent was off-topic, but c'mon, it was sort of funny!)
Partent...Deserves an insightful.
Marketing types all over teh worls are slapping their heads saying "Brilliant!!!"!
Hell, teh name only makes sense used like that!
Look on the bright side... Slashdot could be using something liek Words grammar checker //shudders
Perhaps they ae just following Googles lead on making everything "Beta" forever? ;-)
mplayer rocks BTW, nothing else I've ever tried works as well, on everything that gets thrown at it.
(yes, possibly some work involved, but most likely it WILL work when nothing else available will)
Speaking as a VoIP newbie...

"DSL customers do not get a new IP every time they turn on their computer. "
People turn off their computers???
"Any other way is nibbling at the edges of the problem, but would tend to promote third/fourth etc parties and alternative viewpoints."
Should read:
Any other way is nibbling at the edges of the problem.
This solution would also tend to promote third/fourth etc parties and alternative viewpoints.
"They are still not on the average joe's side. They are out there for the moneyed interests. The two party system is just that, a system."
Then the obvious solution is to prohibit the moneyed interests from having ANY influence.
Remove the money, and the power to influence dissappears.
No corporate contributions. They are NOT people, they can't vote, they should have NO say in the matter.
Unambiguous go to jail penalties if you accept funds(or anything beyond token value) from a corporation

I'm borrowing your .sig, OK?
