The GTA series is far more significant because it brought the roaming/point mission concept to gaming. Everything from The Simpsons Hit and Run to freakin' Jak II has knocked off of it in some manner. Doom 3 has great graphics and that's about it. If it wasn't called "Doom" it'd just be a great looking incredibly simple-structured shooter. Any game where you go from room to room shooting things and finding key cards isn't ground-breaking as a whole. It's essentially the same concept from 1993 with a few extra tidbits like PDAs and cool crap like skin falling off of skeletons and stuff. On a similar subject Duke Nukem Forever is the seminal vaporware of our generation, bar none.

I don't understand how this is such a revolutionary kick in the nuts. I can do this with my current computer in about 2 minutes with a couple of cables.
If I want to play Halo or some MAME games or whatever on my TV, all I need to do is grab my s-video and miniplug-to-1/4" cables (for the stereo), take my laptop upstairs, plug in those 2 things and an external keyboard and mouse, and I'm good to go. If I want to listen to my MP3s on my good stereo, I just plug my laptop into my stereo, perhaps launch a no-sleep app so I can close the lid and put it in the stereo cabinet, and whoobie-doo.
Plus, when I'm done playing Halo or acting like a dancing fool, I can just unplug the cables, take my laptop back downt o my room at my desk, and I have a normal computer setup. Total cost over my existing home computer setup: 5 bucks.
Besides, I almost never do this. Personally, I prefer to play my computer games on my crisp LCD screen at a dense 1280x854 resolution, instead of 720x486 (or whatever standard NTSC screen resolution is) or an overscanned 800x600 on my TV.
(Yeah, consoles put out great graphics on TVs, but imagine if they could run games at normal monitor resolutions; pants around the world would be soiled)

  14. stinky stinks... on Apple Introduces iTunes Music Store, iTunes 4, new iPod · · Score: 1

I wonder if the whole "change your playlist every 10 burns" thing can be circumvented simply by making a duplicate of one MP3 (outside of the music library folder) funking it up by deleting random bits in QuickTime Player or some other audio editing program, and reintroducing it into the library so iTunes thinks its a new song. Heck, smart people can just assemble their MP3s to burn on an audio or MP3 CD outside of iTunes using Toast or OS X's built-in "burn" feature (just create a new folder, put all of the MP3s you want on a CD, and click the "Burn" button in the Finder window button bar. Of course, it would only make an MP3 CD, but it's free) It seems like the change-your-playlist thing is a bit screwy... it could be taken as "please, keep adding new MP3 material to your collection to distribute amongst your friends, don't just pirate the same old crap over and over!" That's quite enough out of me...

If you remember the original G3 Powerbooks, the ones with the green glowing apple that was upside-down when the lid was open and kind of swoopy dark black plastic surrounding a lighter gray column in the center with the gloApple on it, I believe that you could actually print out and attach "skins" to the two swoopy sidepieces of on the back of the lid by folding the edges into some seams or something like that. I remember MacAddict including a few of those "skins" on their CDs for a few months back when that G3 PB case design came out. However, there was an article on /. a few weeks/months ago about Apple requesting a patent for something like case designs that can dynamically change their appearance, so perhaps "case art enabled" notebooks and desktops aren't that far off.

I would say that this is a potential tragedy for the whole space program; we could have some dumbasses in Congress (and we all know how many of dumbasses we have in the government) push to cut funding using this as a basis, the possibility of a replacement design for the shuttle being pushed back years or decades... the tragedy is not so much in the loss of life but also in perhaps the great losses NASA could possibly take as a result of this. Then again, none of that could happen and we'd all be dandy, obla di obla da.

Oh, the new PowerPC processor is turbocharged. Maybe that's why they make so much dang noise, you have the little teeny processor turbo blowing air through the intercooler hidden behind that big mirrored plate on the front of the case. Maybe they'll introduce a supercharged Hemi G4 that uses 500 watts of power but disproves the existence of god and proves the existence of the matrix in one second of processing time in Q3.

  20. Re:Oooh yummy! on Updated Power Macs at Apple.com · · Score: 4, Insightful

People keep on forgetting that Intel chips do a whole lot less with each clock cycle than PowerPC chips. The reason that PowerPC processors have remained at lower clock speeds than Intel chips is because they can get the same amount of work done, if not more, in less clock cycles than it takes for an Intel chip. If only we could get IBM PowerPC chips in G4s... they've been making ass-fast shizz lately, but we've had to stick with Motorola. Maybe Apple doesn't like the slight irony of using IBM stuff.
