  1. Re:My 2 scents on Tivo To Also Offer Ads Your Way · · Score: 1

One must consider that the most popular shows are not always the strongest in terms of marketing results. Often, the most annoying commercials instill their message to the masses, and the flashiest or funniest commercials fail to sell products/services. Another major difficulty with immediate response is that often the commercials' real commercial value is delayed (as in when the customer remembers hearing a brand name somewhere and buys the product well after they saw/remembered the commercial). In short, the complexities of human social structure make properly targeted advertising a very difficult thing.

I don't really understand how this phone is worth $900.00, when the Vodafone/Sharp V903 offers so many features around the $400-$500 price range (in Japan it's actually quite a bit cheaper). The v903 has a 3.2 megapixel camera (with a decent lens, containing autofocus AND 2x OPTICAL zoom). I've been using one of these in the US (T-Mobile) for weeks, and it's terrific. Interestingly enough, you can purchase a beta-unlocked Japanese version that has a few relatively minor bugs (which is what I did) or buy a completely unlocked UK version (only available in one color, has slightly different software and features). I haven't tried yet to roam in Japan through T-Mobile's service though, but apparently it even works in Korea...

In Japan, all new mobile phones are required to make a sound when taking photos (and since the average Japanese upgrades their phone every 6 months, that now includes nearly every phone in use). Everything certainly isn't more expensive in Japan (many electronics and restaurants are a cheaper in Japan than the US, for example, and anybody who's spent a while there will agree), but media is definitely more expensive there. I recently went to a movie theather in Hokkaido where two tickets cost exactly ¥3600 (about $34). This is pretty normal I learned, and CDs are uncommonly expensive everywhere. As an aside, renting CDs is very popular among the Japanese. So, that means that a large portion of the population either listens to these rented CDs until they return them or simply copies them into their MP3 collections...in other words, purchasing CDs is less common.

There will always be a market for $200 million productions (as well as big-budget television shows). Why? Because with $200 million you can afford large numbers of people, each person working on a specific portion of the film. This (ideally) diverse group of people are a set of experts at what they do (including story development). Film-creation technology is improving, but unless the technology can actually replace a crowd of talented people, the home-made film (and mid-budget film) won't replace the big-budget production.
