I know this is Slashdot, but don't you ever go outside? Not much you can do to sound proof your yard, is there. I assume you never open your windows either? Personally, I do both and if I were in England, I would hope the government would be spending a little effort to make living areas a little more liveable.
Most neighborhoods I've seen build near roads have large sound barriers that really cut down on the noise. In many cases where new roads are made or old ones enlarged, sound barriers are included in the construction. Of course this doesn't actually put the cost of the things on the people who benefit from them. The people who benefit from these things should be the ones paying for them not the public at large. A better solution would be to have the homeowners association pay for the sound barriers.

The real question is why did it take 45 days for the public to be informed! When one finds a vulnerability one has a duty to inform the public so that immediate steps can be taken to secure the machine. Just notifying the vendor leaves my machines insecure until the vedor gets around to patching it.

Either answer the question do don't waste your time replying. My only solution to this problem is to use smartforwarding with the company that hosts my webserver. If the companies want to give the reviews vouchers or checks that might be OK (I know some of you will cry foul on that too). In any case the reviewers should be using what general public will get instead of something that could easily be modified to give better results on the test.

There is a reason that poor people are poor and that about 1/3 of lottery winers go bankrupt after 3 years. Wasting $50/mo on a broadband connection is a perfect example.

I hope your 4 year old is watching some educational movies and not the latest mindless Hollywood crap. I'd suggest both of you find some videos on financial planning and economics.

Not only are the limiting the market but I think they will make the general acceptance of Linux take even longer.

Doing it half-assed will make people question once again if Linux is ready for prime time and could turn them off forever.

My experience when buying a Dell with RH pre-loaded was a real disaster.

I don't know how they installed or configured RH, but almost nothing worked without extensive reconfiguration or installing new drivers. I talked with the guy who replaced me and No one has ever figured out why the monitors only display 640x480 but will do 1600x1200 under windows just fine. Tech support from RH was non existant eventhough according to the papers we recieved with the machine, we paid for a year of tech support. Of course tech support from Dell was worthless too.

If I wasn't a geek wannabe (and didn't have my boss' support) I would have sent thing back for a nice Windows box that I know would work. Most people just want their computer to work. If their first experience with Linux is that they have to recompile the kernel to get stuff to work, they'll never touch Linux again.

LOL. This is only typical if the admin is too stupid to set stuff up right and creates complex useless help systems. Most admin's I know spend all day reading web comics, downloading porn, reading slashdot, and reading bugtraq.
