  1. Re:what's up with all this on Hewlett-Packard To Offer Linux-based Media Hub · · Score: 2, Insightful

Why do we need an article for every new gadget that will use Linux?

The slashdot community is a large proponent of open source, of which Linux is a shining example. A new 'gadget' means another inroad. It means another corporate giant values our dollars and is willing to move away from closed source options to get our patronage.

We don't care that another gadget uses Linux. We care that another corporation is willing to use an open source solution to get our dollars.

Perhaps the real point of the article is to announce that Christian HQ has finally decided that nuclear fusion isn't blasphemous (and God has presumably decided not to enforce her patents on the sun).
As already mentioned, Christian Scientists are nothing like the Christian Fundamentalists that believe God created dinosaur bones to test the faithful.
The Christian Science Monitor has proven itself a respectable news journal.
And thank you for the she pronoun. Blessed Be.

The reason Mac OSX and Linux are immune to spyware isn't because it's a superior operating system.

It's because there's no money in it. Someone is getting paid to bombard you with spyware installations. They want to hit as many workstations as possible. And that means aiming for Windows users.

Your post suggests everyone should use OS X or Linux. The day Windows looses majority share of the desktop market is the day spyware and viruses will start to pop up on your OS X and Linux workstations.

The solution isn't to get rid of windows. It's to educate users, fortify the OS against spyware and viruses by closing security holes, and by legislating unathorized software install as a punishable offense.

    Just my 2 coppers.

Don't up and quit just because the new CIO has decided to focus more on the bottom line and less on perks and warm fuzzies. There's a strong push to make IT Managers more accountable for actual dollars ever since Enron went south.

Which is a direct response to the happy days of free bagels and gournmet coffee dispensers for every office. The bubble is gone. Time to deal with it.

Pretend you just got fired. Go home, sleep on it. Come back the next day with a 'new job' mentality. Take at look at your responsabilities and your compensation. Is this what you want to do for the next couple of years?

Amd if the answer's no, start looking. I just ended 3 months of unemployment with three job offers. The jobs are back.

John Katz:Before, they could only read comics and fantasize about becoming more powerful.

Who is they? If your talking about the huddled masses of geekness, then I'd like to know under what pretensive storm of insight that we have become more powerful.

John Katz:Or he's a mutant wolverine with fingers of steel who can't ever have a casual beer with his pals.

Do you even read Marvel comics? I'm going to assume you mean wolverine. Who, BTW, is not a mutant wolverine, but a mutant human named wolverine. And his claws are retractable. Of course he can drink beer with his friends. Of course a long time reader such as yourself should be able to count the number of times on one hand that we've seen Wolverine drink beer. He smokes cigars and drinks the occassional hard liquor. My guess is Canadian whiskey. You do know he's from Canada, right?

John Katz:Stories like Spider-Man and Batman also have a uniquely American and, until September 11, old-fashioned sense of civics.

    Huh?

John Katz:We seem to constantly be turning backwards to myths for inspiration and entertainment, while we are busy making the myths of tomorrow but don't really know which ones will take.

Again, could you please explain what Myths you are talking about. You mean mythology like Greek, Norse and biblical tales? Please show me where in the bible I can find a masked superhero with arachnid powers.
