If you really want the Big Bucks(tm) though you're better to go the independent contractor route. If you can bill yourself out at a high enough rate (and get a good accountant to find those tax loopholes!) you'll be laughing all the way to the bank.
Plus as an indie you can stay out of all the office politics that always go on at every company and if you don't like where you are, find another gig. With enough xp this should be easy enough in our industry.
Whoever decided that calling these things Mashups should be taken out back and shot. Whenever I read that word my brain does a little fart and I think that I'm a little bit stupider for it.
I downloaded the demo version when it first came out. I think it was fun for about 2 minutes until I had to micro-manage everything. While it was a very cool concept and definitely had potential the execution unfortunately just wasn't there.
Ultimately I gave up and uninstalled it.
As for the comment regarding the lack of need for smaller indepedant game developers.. well I call bullshit on that. Just because 1 company fails at producing games that people will buy and enjoy does not mean that all companies will fall into the same boat. Those that can come out with games that are actually FUN TO PLAY (gasp!) should do well.
Until they are eaten up by some bigger player who will then make sequel after sequel spewing out the same regurgitated crap with "All new features!"
Wow. Thanks for the lesson in US/Canada tax law.:)
That is a very interesting and inventive way to claim your moving expenses. I wish I had thought of that but looking back on it my moving expenses were about 1/4 of what you had so it wouldn't have made much difference to me.
Kudos to you for playing the system. I applaud you!
A ltitle late on the follow up to this but....
I have had to file in both the US and Canada when I moved back after a couple of dot-bomb experiences. I did file a 1040 in the US but I met the substantial presence test by a few days.
But what it looks like you are saying is that you can file a 1040 irregardless of the substantial presence clause based on the fact that you can claim moving expenses? I don't see how this helps you unless you actually have said moving expenses. Unless you are saying you should file a false return?
Except now you are an accountant.
Gah i'd rather jab pointy objects into my eyes than have to be an accountant. Or even worse - program accounting software.
Dear god no! If I was forced to code in a language like that I would beat down everyone around me with my keyboard.
Seriously, XML is not a new paradigm. It is a way to describe data. A bit bloated IMO but good for what it's designed to do. Why are people trying to shoehorn it in everywhere else? I've heard of plans to put XML into DNS! ArghhhHH!!!
Most games have such big dev teams that you can't just name 1 or 2 of them (with the obvious big name exceptions).
More important than the developers of the games are the game development houses. If it isn't fun then who cares who wrote it. In all my years of gaming I've never picked up a title and said "Gee, I wonder if so-and-so wrote this. His previous game was awesome." I base my decisions partly on the company that wrote the game.
Of course there are exceptions to that as well (such as the entire dev team leaving and forming a new company or being replaced, etc, etc) but for the most part if a solid company puts forth a title I would be more inclined to look at it.
That reeks of work. So why don't *YOU* do it and I'll just d/l it off you when it's done.
Oh and if you can code this in around an hour.. heck I'll even give you 2, I will gladly donate some money for your efforts!
thanksbye!
I know a couple self-employed electricians.
They do not do very nicely. Yet. It takes years to build up a client base and reputation for yourself. Just like any other business.
But if it does take off then just like any other business you will do well for yourself.
OTOH being an electrician in BC could be very lucrative if you know the right people (i.e. grow-ops):)
The difference with the Korean produce shop owner is that he has a local business community to borrow funds from. That's how Korean stores are able to start up and survive. Then as he begins to profit from his business he can repay his loan and pay his membership dues which others can then borrow to start up other businesses. It's a co-operative system/community that enables Korean grocers to thrive.
I have yet to hear of a single software company co-op.
The problem with this is that in lower levels most of the assignments are made to help you understand material. What good is it to try to make a student "care" about their work if it's only meant as practice?
Rarely do you get any of these "tough" problems until you have a solid base of understanding (which usually does not occur until your last year) to even attempt to come up with a solution.
This is from my experience as a CS grad. I mean, how many people actually care about a doubly-linked list or a B-tree in their 2nd year of University? I know I didn't. And I'm guessing that neither did most of my prof's or TAs. Most of them were there to do research, not teach. Although I did have 1 or 2 good profs that did really try to get us to think but these are far and few between.
https://www.google.com/search?q=%22script+src=%22http://lilupophilupop.com/sl.php%22 shows only 286,000 results. Where did 1 million come from?
++++1!

You write a book about it and speak at conferences extolling the benefits of moving from Java to RoR.

Those would be the constructicons and the big robot was called Devastator I believe.
Silly kids you're not supposed to plug your computer into the uplink/wan port! No wonder it doesn't work :p

Because money == power. Welcome to capitalism at it's finest!

LMFAO!
Did anyone else notice that the newest article in those links was from 2001? At least quote something recent if you want to spread propaganda.
