$10,000* to the first hacker who figures out how to mod the iPod to create a "song speed" menu option. Or better yet, maybe this'll encourage Apple to add the option themselves. Or even better yet, maybe this'll convince Apple to open-source their iPod software, so people can continue to use the iPod in was it was never intended (thus increasing profits).
Huh? I don't see how this would work. The fire is at A, and Willy runs to C (the center point of the island), and starts a fire (for simplicity's sake let's say he uses matches, rather than grabbing a burning log). Okay, now he's got a fire going from A to B, C to B and C back at him up to A! Is a 2 mph wind strong enough to hold back the fire going from C to A? I doubt it--the island is heavily forested. The other solution would be to simply dig a ditch, but that's also impossible in a heavily forested area, unless he's got a chainsaw. The only acceptable solution I can think of is to wade out in the water, which seems like a cop-out, as far as answers to riddles go.
Just checking. I can't believe no one's mentioned the part in Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon where Randy "prints" out the "message" (trying to avoid a spoiler) on his laptop's LED.
Here's an LED controller program inspired by that bit in the book.
VW's "Milky Way" (last one on the page). Like the best silent films, they manage to tell a wonderful story with no words, except this is all in the space of a minute. The music chosen gives further meaning to the video, and vice versa. The fact that it's an advertisement is almost an afterthought. Which, ironically, makes you want to buy one even more. I consider it to be one of the finest short films ever made. If more commercials were like this, I'd pay for that adcritic subscription. Especially if they offered a way to get broadcast-quality copies of these commercials.
If you ever feel the urge to replace your old turntable, look into getting a Technics SL-1200. I'm constantly amazed on what a beautiful piece of machinery those are. Listening to records is almost like a ritual to me now. Way different than popping in a CD and having the music "magically" appear.
Me: I can't stand ads. Every goddam product and service is in my face any time I want to interact with anyone, even on the internet! I go to Slashdot to get some news, and make jokes and comments with some interesting people and it's all banner ad this, come look at my...
Slashdot reader: What's that?
Me: What?
Slashdot reader: That line of text right under this comment.
Me: There's nothing there.
Slashdot reader: Take your hand off the screen!
Me: I don't know what you're talking about. That isn't the spot you want to look at. Move along...
I was holding out for the 20gig one, but now I'm holding out for the one with a mic/line input. No, I don't have any reason to believe they're ever going to actually make one, but since what I'm really holding out for is a job,:) I get to make up new features to hold out for every time a new one is released.
But if they ever make one with a mic, I'll be getting it, job or no job, and then I'll have a child, and something to name.
Three simple letters. That's all I wanted. How long must us iTunes whores be slaves to the mp3 format? Maybe the next iTunes release will support it, but I figure that if it's not in QT, it's not gonna be in iTunes.
I just was flipping through this old gaming mag today. They had a quote from Alexey, which went something like: "I remember the first time I saw those shapes coming down the screen. I had no shape acceleration or point system, and I couldn't program them in because I was having too much fun playing the half-finished game."
Apparently the shapes looked like this then:
[][][][] []
and I mean, exactly like that. Simple text brackets. How beautiful is that? One of the best games ever made, nothing but text brackets; still addictive.
I gotta say though, half of the fun was the music. Where did all the good video game music go anyway? Tetris, Super Mario Bros, Frogger, Zelda. I can't remember the last time a game's theme music was stuck in my head all day.
For those who haven't heard it, check out my recording "An Association Named Sue," based on this post by Yo Grark. It's all free, so it's not like I'm being a marketing jackass here.
I've also added a gif of an old pirate flag modified to reflect today's concerns. I think it'd make a great t-shirt, but I'm too busy with other stuff. Feel free to do whatever you want with it.
I hope they're not using normal glass, which is technically a liquid. Look at windows in colonial houses; their bottom is thicker than their top.
Now that I think of it, they should put in some honey. I know that honey has been dug up from egyptian tombs, and was still good. Who knows, maybe it'll last 50k years?
House: Armand Van Helden- 2future4U or Killing Puritans Fatboy Slim- You've come a Long Way Baby or Halfway Between the gutter and the Stars (don't ignore the master) As far as DJs go, Danny Tenaglia- Global Underground 010 is great. I don't listen to a lot of DJ mixes though. They get kind of repetetive for me. Good to dance to, but not to put on in the living room. Fatboy Slim's Big Beat Boutique CD is an exception to this though. Man I'd love to see him live. If you can find it, get Archigram's single Carnival. Just got it, love it. I first heard it on Pete Tong's radio show, which airs friday night 6-9 in England. But I listen to it over the web at bbc.co.uk/radio1. I'm pretty sure they archive the show each week so you can listen to it anytime.
Drum & Bass: Everything But the Girl vs. Drum & Bass. EBTG's album "Walkiung Wounded" is really good too. That's where the singles that are remixed on the former come from. Photek does some of that remixing. Great, but i can't recommend a specific album.
Experimental: Boards of Canada- In a Beautiful place out in the country Land of the Loops- Bundle of Joy. Kind of a cross between electronica and indie rock. Funkstorung- their remix of Bjork's Allis full of love is unbelievable. While you're at it, don't forget Bjork. Homogenic and Vespertine are pure genius.
Downtempo: Theivery Corporation- Sounds from the theivery hi-fi Nightmares on Wax- Carboot Soul Kruder & Dorfmeister- The K&D Sessions Peace Orchestra- Peace Orchestra Joshua Csehak- A Day for Nyla (yeah, that's me, link in my sig. Hey, I can't help it if I think it kicks ass) Massive Attack- Mezzanine. But the track "Better Things" off of Protection is maybe their best track ever. Air- Virgin Suicides. Also, Moon Safari. Their other two are really good too though.
Hip hop: I just can't leave out Missy Elliott's "Supa Dupa Fly." If you're thinking about delving into hip-hop, get it without hesitation.
Simply mindblowing: William Orbit- Pieces in a modern style
That should get you started. Just pick a genre you feel like listening to and buy. Or download, as the case may be.
A good place to start would be to include whatever was on the Voyager spacecraft.
I wonder why they picked 50,000 years. I mean, you might as well say 80 gadzillion years. Why not just say "we'll do our best to make it last forever?"
Q: Amateur videos don't get me into space or orbit because they're generally limited to low budget toys and props. Is there much of a gain in viewer impulse to be obtained by further research into hybrid (ie, plastic/latex) bodysuits? How about exotic themes (buckyballs, multi-man nitrous fun, man-flouride for example) - any route for amateur utilization of these?
Brian Walker / Rocket Guy: I am using monoxonil-9 because using it as a monolubricant is the safest method of lubrication for my particular rocket. There is no chance of a catastrophic breakout or burning. This alone eliminates about one half of all standard problems that are encountered by a man on my rocket flight.
(I can't believe I'm posting this. If it's modded down, I SO deserve it.)

On an unrelated note, anyone else notice the karma system has changed? Apparently, my karma is now "excellent." Man, I want a point system back!
My Karma is NOT "Excellent" damnit! I want a number score!
Pgpckt: [panting] Grade me...look at me...evaluate and rank me! Oh, I'm good, good, good, and oh so smart! Grade me! [CmdrTaco scribbles "Karma = 50" on a piece of paper] [Pgpckt walks off, muttering crazily and sighing]
Okay potty mouth, what I'm talking about is completely different. There's rackmounted SERVERS, like xserve, and rackmounted AUDIO HARDWARE. Xserves are likely very loud. These theoretical rackmounted g4's for the audio world would be very quiet, like the cube. Also, racks for servers and audio hardware probably aren't the same size. Next time, try not assuming you're the smartest guy on the planet.

here. An interesting game of moderation tennis was played with it, but I maintain that it makes a damn fine mint julep.

Sweet! I didn't know 1.0 wasn't ready yet. That makes perfect sense; I'm sure your theory is correct. I'll be downloading that QT component now...

Is that the same as Bium?

fuck it, what you need is this.
But if you highlight a block of text it reverses to a much better green on white
Nah, too much work. What you need to do is stare at it for a minute, then look at a blank white wall. Presto! Readable text.
