The current laws aren't enforced and new ones are created because everyone in power feels they must prove that (only?) they know what is best. Any previous action was not good enough or was incorrect in their view. This is a common problem among those who _want_ to be leaders. It builds their ego and gives them a sense of power to make policy - even when policy already exists. Simple enforcement of existing policy does nothing for the enforcers reputation, but gives credit to the creater.
In my opinion, ego-stroke policy generation is exactly the type of action that should lead us to elect ONLY people who do not want to be leaders or elected officials.

Only mosquitoes born with no adversion to the high frequencies would feed on people and they would reproduce like mad, devolping a thirst for human blood at the same time. Then, after the sensitive mosquitoes starve, the super race of mosquitoes would conquer the world. Mwhaahahahah. Where can I get one?

But in this case, it seems i paid for the right to use the techonology that has been made available - not the right to copy software or develop games. I hate the idea that big businesses have become the ones protected from innovators by American patent laws, but it doesn't change that they do hold rights. Relax and review what others have said: "There are legitimate uses for mod chips. For one to develop games without paying Sony the 30k for a development set. " Is this legitimate use? bypassing the development license?
Are the insides of the system proprietary? I've heard that developers licenses are sold. If they sell a license to develop works and you buy a mod chip so you can develop your "own works on the system for private use." have you not bypassed their system? Is it any different, then, than buying a "mod code" (my made up term) to use Photoshop for your own private use?
I can buy the idea of using a mod chip to make backups of discs if sony will not replace broken or scratched originals - but that's not what I'm hearing!
Should selling something that allows you to do illegal things be illegal? I mean, we sell guns and pipes. All kinds of things. Should you buy those things doesn't mean you're going to kill or do drugs, right?
is there any legit use for a mod chip? If the answer is no, then you understand the difference. If the answer yes, tell me so I can justify using one.

Check out D-SCI (now Science) NGEO, or something with content - you're right about one thing - the masses like what I think is crap. Rise above the tendency to belittle and explore what else is available. Instead of pointing out the woes, find solutions to problems and suggest GOOD "programming."

Actually - I find local music to be CONSIDERABLY BETTER than the crap fed to the nation and the world by New York and L.A. - I'm glad we have some source other than RIAA minions...
I lug my vaio (15") everywhere - It may not fit in all back packs, but it fit very easily in all that I tried. My vaio serves many purposes, perhaps most often as a portable dvd player for either the kids in van or my fellow paleontologists out in the desert after a hard days work. I also program and do video editing on it, so the 16+ inches would be quite nice! Don't get me wrong, when it comes to power computing I have my fast computer at home with the 20" behemoth moniter and a smaller laptop for light use like email in the kitchen - I mean geez, can't a guy have everything he wants? 1 extra inch diagonally is very little - unless you're trying to have 3 or 4 windows open at once... then it's quite a bit.
