  1. Virtualbox on Ask Slashdot: Which Virtual Machine Software For a Beginner? · · Score: 1

Oracle's Virtualbox is the only VM that directly supports Mac hosts, if that's a factor. It's also free and very stable. Sun did a great job on it and so far Oracle's not screwed that up.

Chris Dodd can arguably be called the father (or one of them) of the current economic collapse. Hopefully he can do a repeat performance at the MPAA..

  7. Sing happy birthday in public, get fined $200.. on New Content-Delivery Tech Should Be Presumed Illegal, Says Former Copyright Boss · · Score: 1

Actually, it makes much more sense to block or remove copyright after 15 years than it does to attempt prior-restraint on innovation. The copyright Nazis would like to make everyone believe that copyright is *forever* but it was originally good for only 50 years or the life of the artist in the US. Since revision, it's been extended to 70, 95 or 120 years, depending. At some point, the Public Domain must be allowed to dominate content. It's worth mentioning that the printing press was viewed as one such technology in need of draconian control by the British Crown, and only those out of reach of the Crown in the Colonies could hope to print freely. We all know how badly *that* worked out..

  8. Enough already on Chicago Teachers Rip 'Big Money Interest Groups' · · Score: 1

Spoiled brats trying to instill the same attitudes in students. What do we expect? Privatize *all* education and make it results-based. Honestly, how can it be worse?

  16. KOD (Kiss Of Death) on Cheap Solar Panels Made With An Ion Cannon · · Score: 1

Let's see, USG funded solar success stories in the US = 0, privately funded solar success stories in the US 3 and counting. So, all the USG funding is good for is *killing* innovative solar ideas. How about the USG simply lowers tax rates for 5 years on Solar manufacturing in the US instead of trying to pick the winners ahead of the game?

  17. Options too? on The Zuckerberg Tax · · Score: 1

So, when I worked at Sun and had 20000 stock options that were rising 8% or more *per week*, I should have paid taxes on that "wealth?" That would have been pretty brutal, since by the time most of them were vested they had gone from $126 to about $4 per share. Bitching that some get wealth and some get the shaft is a time-honored tradition on /., but don't confuse your argument with more than bitching. Keep your day job.

And they are immune due to their education and position? BS on that. I've had classes that could better be taught by a talking donkey. Sorry, you folks get the same bums rush we all do when technology hits us over the head. How much sympathy do teacher's unions typically have for auto workers or airline pilots when they strike? What goes around comes around.

  20. Nowadays.. on Slate Reprints Blue-Box Article That Inspired Jobs · · Score: 1

The irony here is rich and creamy. Jobs and iTunes made the bluebox-like act of downloading music for 'free' an act of unspeakable violence, at least if you ask the lawyers of the RIAA or Apple. So, where will the next Jobs get the thrills needed to motivate them to greatness? Probably where we expect it the least.

  21. Fast is great, but.. on IBM Creates Multi-Bit Phase Change Memory · · Score: 2

It's density+cost per bit that will change things. PCM is still orders of magnitude slower than SRAM and DRAM and the Memristor (HP) may still beat it to market for the aforementioned parameters. Nice that so many irons are in the fire to retire spinning rust, can't happen soon enough for me.
