    Things only change fast on the surface. Down below, the changes come really slowly.

    Writing well designed, debugged code which works takes longer than some guy just hacking it out in VB like they showed him at Microsoft school.

    So, what good is that MS cert that I need so badly?

    Quality has lost out to time to market.

    So true. Good enough wins, and people no longer demand even that.

    Thats one hell of an assumption. Mexico and Canada are right next to the US, but most Americans don't speak Spanish or French. I understand someone who is German understanding some Flemish (Belgium) but there are more than a few languages spoken in Russia alone

    How many people in El Paso or San Diego speak Spanish? The USA is a large country, so you have to compare the right areas.

    At some point this year the volunteers decided to split from SSC. Then SSC goes out to trademark a name someone else has used for roughly eight years. SSC claims they've been using the name since '96. So what? The volunteers have been using it since '95.

    As far as I can tell, SSC has only been suing the name for about a month. The volunteers who started Linux Gazette in 1995 have been using it for 8 years.

    You are misinformed. Several states (including New York) will restore the voting rights of some felons after they serve time. The problem is that Jeb demands that the felon from NY petition to have his voting rights restored when, in fact, he already has those rights.

    Patents can be enforced at any time by the patent owner. They can also be selectively enforced (see IBM saying that SCO is violating their patents while not going after anyone else that uses it).

    So, how can they expect to enforce this? All of their patents cover VFAT issues. AFAICT, FAT16 is unencumbered.

    The users had to run the rebuild disc to completely reload their HD before a return would be considered, even if you'd just bought the PC. And the catch is that unless you bought the extended warranty, you didn't get one and had to pay about 40 to get the disc!

    I don't know for sure, but isn't that illegal?

    I believe the typical strategy is to run up your credit cards, mortgage your house, and borrow from relatives.

    Well, their president promised his home state to the Republicans. How's that? Combine that with the fact that these machines are closed and, so far as we can tell, no real effort has been put into securing them or ensuring their correctness.

    That's no good - every time you create a new creature, you have to modify the code for the server. Much better to have the creatures be data-driven.

    You're here willingly. You can remove yourself from taxation by leaving. Unlike un-free countries, Americans are free to leave the country without special permission.

    some of us would prefer to change things where we are instead of picking up and moving every time the local government does something stupid (which is all the time, really)

    They go through a 100 spindle of CD's a week, easily. The increased CD tax would seriously hurt their business... This is dumb, I thought canada was smarter than this

    That's what, $30? How is $30/week going to affect their business?

    why not just put something up there to absorb a bunch of junk and deorbit?

    Especially since the pressure difference is about the same (14psi->0, compared with 35psi -> 14psi).

    The pressure is about half - your 35 psi tire is 35 psi relative to the atmosphere. That's why the pressure changes in the Spring and Fall.

    I don't mean to be condesending but, no where is english can you use sentenses like...
    I didn't do nothing.

    Everywhere - it's proper idiomatic English. Note that this is English, not Latin, and double negatives are valid because they are widely used and have an agreed upon meaning. We can also use 'they' as a singular neutral noun if we so choose.

    Good question. As far as I can tell, Pakistan has only been an independent country for about 55 years, hardly enough time to develop an ethnicity.

    I'm a programmer in Bangalore, and let me tell you, if my job does get "outsourced" to Chandigarh, I'll simply pack my bags and head off Chandigarh! No big deal, eh? ;-)

    That's not really outsourcing, now is it? In the US, we call it relocation, because you can follow the job. The vast majority of Americans whose jobs have run off to India and China couldn't follow their jobs if they wanted to. Other contries are funny about immigration, see?

    You got that right. If you actually figure out what's going on, you fall out of fire-mode and get actual work done. However, nobody else knows what the hell they're doing - all they see is you slacking off, so you get fired for being competent. A favor, really.

    So now that I'm the boss I'm trying to change as little as possible. Try and keep things in a rhythm and ask people to help come up with ideas.

    Sounds like the Japanese idea of benign neglect - upper management sits back and allows line managers to get on with the job.
